Description
So here's the deal. Rainbow Dash is not my favorite character. While she can be entertaining, and her gung-ho attitude endearing, her bull headed neature and egomania can be too annoying. That said, I loved this episode. It was still her being stubborn and kind of selfish, but for reasons much more relatable than other RD episodes. And oh Faust, the love she showed towards Tank was heart melting. There was a lot of great non-verbal dialogue and moments of them just... I don't know, caring about each other. It was fantastic. I've said before that Rainbow is probably the most immature of the 6, and it really showed here, particularly in the second to last scene. But it wasn't annoying, it wasn't over the top. It was someone venting pain and frustration that they didn't know how else to deal with. It's real. And that's a large part of what makes this show great. Also RD and Tank booties. So damn cute.
As a closing thought, I would really like a flashback episode detailing Fluttershy and Rainbow as kids. Flutters in particular seems to have a good understanding of how Rainbow works, and some time exploring how two strong opposites came to be so close and understanding would be a fascinating story.

I love this drawing. Your episode art is always the best.
Seriously, did anyone not cry when watching this episode? It was the most feels-heavy episode ever and it was the first episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (or ANY TV show I watched in my whole life) that made me having a literal crying fit. Two times (so far).
I felt like lying with them on Rainbow Dash's bed there when I rewatched the episode today.
Rainbow Dash loving one of her friends so much that she cries about having to let go of him for a few months and three of her other friends joining in and crying with her together because they just can't bear it to see one of their best friends so distraught. What could be more touching than that?
And all this amount of feels without Tank actually dying, like the beginning of the episode made it look like. Now imagine how hard and sad it would be if Tank or another pet should actually die one day, or, even worse, if one of them should die in the fight with a villain one day, and the show is covering THIS.
If that happens, we're all going to die too probably. Dying at the inside. A part of us wouldn't survive this.
I'm still shaking from all these feels.....

Very well done! Β I am right there with you on how this episode made me feel. Β This art piece completely captured it.. great work!
Although I absolutely love Dash and her self-conscious, but do-anything-for-you attitude, this episode could have been about any of the ponies and I'd still have loved it. Β It has all the elements that make me love this show. Β Huge quotable story lines, great morals, AMAZING song (easily up there with Smile song), emotion, hilarious puns (oh god, they finally made fun of the pony names.. hahaha), and slapstick, silly and over-the-top comic style comedy. Β RD was just the delivery method to let them do the things they did. Β Yeah, it was over-done, but at the same time, I'd go to extremes for my pet too.
I was so disappointed with the first episodes of this season. So dry, so 'safe'. This broke the boundaries and made me laugh and cry at the same time. Β Thank you for making art that reflects it

Took the words right outa my mouth. Very touching to see someone tough and stubborn be the complete opposite towards something lovely like saying goodbye. Very touching and also very relatable in many cases. This is far off my favorite episode!

I have a number of scatter dot brushes at different sizes. The smallest form the majority of it, with two larger dot brushes to make the focus shapes.

I'll be honest, I really didn't like this episode much. Rainbow Dash isn't my favorite character either, but she has her moments sometimes. This time, however, she seemed to completely degenerate into her season one self and forgot all the important lessons she had learned over the years (year?). It's sweet that she loves Tank, but come on, she practically became a terrorist when she tried to stop the winter and blew up half of her old home town. Just because she's friends with a Princess doesn't mean she should have gotten away with it, but alas, she did. She really is the most immature of the Mane Six (except maybe for Pinkie Pie) and she proved it, big time.
What's more, the episode had other flaws than just RD's behavior as well. No matter what anyone says, I simply refuse to believe that the first three seasons all happened inside one year in the show's timeline. It makes zero sense no matter how you try to explain it. This can't have been RD's first winter with Tank, no way. Even if we were to assume that "Hearth's Warming Eve" chronologically takes place before "May the Best Pet Win", there are still many inconsistencies that are impossible to fit inside one year. I must come to the conclusion that the writers of the show can't keep track of their own timeline or that they deliberately choose to ignore it whenever they feel like it. It's sad, but it's the only explanation.
The episode did have some good things, however. The song "I'll Fly" was beautiful. Too bad it had to be about Rainbow Dash doing something obviously wrong for her own self-interest, but hey, after four seasons without a Rainbow Dash solo song, I'll take what I can get. The moral of the episode, no matter how poorly executed, wasn't bad either. RD going through the five stages of grief over something inevitable is something I'm sure many people can relate to, although I feel like it was a little over-the-top since Tank wasn't dying, he was simply going to hibernate. Then again, since Hasbro doesn't allow "pet death" episodes, I suppose this is the closest thing we're ever going to get. I didn't like that almost everypony cried at the end of the episode - it was awkward as heck - but I loved Applejack and Twilight. Applejack cried on the inside and Twilight was smart enough to know that there was no real reason to be sad. There's a reason why those two are my favorite ponies.
All in all, I was somewhat disappointed, but it wasn't the worst episode in the series. 5.8/10, too much tears.

I'm in the same boat there too. After season 5 strong opening and two episode, we get this and its why I don't like Cindy marrow writing.Β

Okay tell me this how far would you go for your pet? how far would you go to keep it with you? would you risk it all for it to stay by your side?

I can understand that and if that is the episode focus, that is good. Its just that how they present it is what i have a problem with. I was never a fan of Cindy marrows writing because of this and how there is one focus aspect that seems way too hard to accept and dare I say fail in execution at least to me. However I would never call this the worst episode she wrote as that honor still goes to griffon the brush off. I would say I give the episode credit for trying. Β

Trust me I really want to like it and luckily I do like a lot of aspects and RD when they show her emotion at the end. Oh and the ending really gives a good feel moment.Β
