Description
Bug fables scratches an itch for a game like the old games so well it's honestly better than the old paper Mario characters.First the story. Basically it's about your team of explorers Vi, Leif, and Kabbu trying to find the legendary Everlasting Sapling for the ant queen. The characters are all pretty fun and memorable, and the story even surprised me with the direction it went in as it kept itself pretty unpredictable. Overall the story is very good, and even some of the subquests are pretty good.
Next the graphics. It's pretty good being somewhere in between as good as the first two games. Every location is memorable and you will remember where to go especially since doing the subquests involves a lot of backtracking. The characters are animated well, and honestly I really like the bugs design as they are very cute. Overall they are good, and are likely to age well.
Finally the gameplay. If you have played the original paper mario games it shares a lot of it's mechanics just renaming some things. Fp is TP, badges are medals, and troubles are quests. Now I played this game on the switch port, and I will tell you that the game doesn't put all the buttons to use. For example the Y and back buttons are completely useless in this game, and to be honest with most of the characters abilities tied to the B button I sometimes accidentally use the wrong version of the move. The game could have used the Y button to separate the different moves. Now besides that complaint the game is excellent. combat is pretty fun and challenging and medals can give you some very helpful moves. The game also gives you a hard mode medal to make the game more challenging which I used the entire game. There's also several fun mini games like a card game which is pretty fun, and an arcade with two games to play. There are several subquests to do which can be very rewarding with really good medals. You'll be doing a lot of backtracking for quests, but the tunnels and eventually the ant compass negates the problems. Overall the game fun and fulfilling to play through
This game is definitely worth your time and money if you are a paper mario fan or jrpg fan. I give the switch port a 9 out of ten, a must play for paper fans
