One of the most beautiful people I can think of, Penelope Cruz was captured beautifully by an unknown photographer in the photo that inspired my portrait.This is my first graphite drawing on smooth bristol paper, and I must say, it is quite nice stuff. Smudges wretchedly, though.
The quality of this is poor because I took a digital photograph of it and my camera doesn't have a high enough resolution to make portrait photographs good. But I wanted to share anyway, and since my school is stupid and got rid of the scanners I did all of my scanning previously with in favor of ones with a view of like 5" by 4" or some god-awful small dimensions I don't scan there anymore either.
I really like how this one turned out, but don't compare it with the photo, since her arm is too short and her back is too straight...but that's okay! I like it how it turned out.
And for those who read my journal, this is the imfamous 'Porn' drawing...sensual and provocative, yes, but pornographic? Whatever.

well done, the shading on the back and to the lower left is really well done, and the spine at the upper back is just right.
a really attractive portrait, particularly for a first attempt. i remember when i first used bristol paper and the lack of texture was very disconcerting.
as for pornographic, what a load of bollocks! how is a picture of a womans back pornographic? some people really need to get out more....

Fuck anyone who says this is porn, this is the type of artwork that I can vibe from. If I see a friend with this type of skill it makes me want to create because the level you are on is so much further than most.

Beautiful image. Not even remotely porn--I can't believe anyone who's seen either serious art or porn would ever think that. Btw, the back is the most arresting and sensual part of the drawing and adds a lot of extra visual interest compared to if you had drawn the head alone.

Exactly. I didn't even consider cropping the photograph for my drawing because of how alluring her back is in this shot. I think that the layout presents her graceful back and side as being just as important as her face.

Hey that turned out really well. I've been thinking about using bristol paper, I've heard that it's very nice to work on. When you say "smudges wretchedly" what do you mean?

There is almost no tooth/grain to the paper, so the graphite only lays on the surface, and the blackest areas are very 'loose'. Obviously the darkest areas always smudge in graphite drawings, but on paper that has more texture the graphite stays intact more.
I use the bristol mainly for pen work, and the pen doesn't soak in, really, so you have to be VERY careful not to touch anything that was put down up to 4 hours ago...

NOT porn! As a portrait artist, though, I'd probably cut the whole back out and focus on the beautiful shoulders/neck/head area!
