Description
Sunset - College Cove, Trinidad, California, USASingle Exposure, 210 Seconds, 10 stop ND FIlter, 2 Stop Grad ND Filter, 10mm, F11, 100 Iso, Tripod, Shutter release cable, Wet boots.
I got my boots soaked within the first five minutes I arrived at this beach. I'm used to lakes - I haven't been to the ocean much, so of course I would overlook the oceans very unpredictable waves. While composing my next shot, a random wave ran past me leaving me drenched from mid thighs down to my feet. My pants dried quickly but the boots were wet and unwearable for the next several days. This sunset was shot within College Cove, in Trinidad on my first night staying there. This is the extreme northern end of the beach facing northwest. I was also caught a bit off-gaurd by how fast the colors in the clouds appeared before the sun was completely set - In the mountains I'm used to waiting a good twenty minutes after the sun has dissappeared before seeing color. Taking long exposures like this requires a filter that cannot be seen through, so it takes some time and concentration composing a shot, however the ocean seems to demand your attention or else you could get washed away - these two do not mix well!

Wll, it was worth the wet boots. But yes, the challenge of ocean photography is that one is dealing with a constantly moving, inconsistent, force that is stronger than a mere photographer. Also tough on the equipment with all the salt in the air and water . . .Great shot you managed to get!!

VERY hard on the equipment! I found myself deep cleaning every piece of equipment at the end of every day - the tripod is screwed! Thank you very much - I appreciate your feedback!

Ooh, ouch. such a bummer for the equipment. It's why I am always so amazed at some of those awesome wave photos that just have to be taken from in the ocean. Special equipment, I guess. Don't want to risk my own camera that way, so at the beach I take my old one. Not as good, but I won't die if something happens to it!

I had a few pictures I took knee/thigh deep in water - maybe they're good...maybe not - we'll see later! I definitely need to clean the tripod legs big time! With all the salt and sand no tripod would last long in that environment! I do think taking some "throw away" equipment for those precarious situations is a smart idea and would save a lot of money and heartbreak!
