the flag thing is a neat way of thinking about that. really helps clarify that part which has been tricky for me to suss out.

At the thing in flowing water the flow directions behind the thing are a little bit complicated. Actually water is flowing against the stream there and you have some swirly swirls at the edges between the directions.
