Description The deeds of Ancient peoples and historical figures often echo throughout history and into the
future. There are many example of notable tribes, nations and individuals leaving entymological
imprints, permament marks on language that last to this day. Like the Vandals, and ancient tribe
whose name took on a new meaning and survived to this day, the Hipsters are also known to us,
although their memory is limited almost entirely to their name. A fierce people, capable even of
defeating a Roman legion, the Hipsters took great pride in the appearance of their beards, and the
Roman fashion of shaved faces agitated them greatly, since they found the very concept of shaving
deplorable. The victory in the battle of Strasbourg, depicted here, further consolidated the
Hipsters' belief that a warrior with a fabulous beard is far superior to one without one. This
reverence of beards and a sense of superiority is the only legacy and the only connection of the
Hipsters of the ancient world to the Hipsters of today.

Hi,

Thank you for your answer, a nice surprise, I certainly didn't expect one now! Β
I wish I were as fluent in a second language as you are in English - I do admire that.

I'm not quite sure what you are saying 'nope' to though. My comment on what seemed to be a light-hearted joke was only requesting confirmation that the Roman Emperor intended to portray Julian the Apostate- that's all.

Whether the title 'Apostate' is valid or not, that's what he is now known as as a result of virtriolic histories since by Christian historians. Sometimes he is known as Julian II, to differentiate him from Julian of Pannonia.

Julian's relationship with Constantius II was certainly tense.Β

I didn't comment on the Battle of Argentoratum or its result, which i know Julian won.

He wasΒ  an interesting character, brought up as a devout Christian but throwing that off when he became Emperor and trying to turn the clock back and restore the old religion. Have you read Gore Vidal's novel? Julian's coinage certainly makes his intentions clear.

Hi

Undoubtedly you are correct, Julian has been systematically attacked by Christian writers over the centuries - he is seen as a traitor.

His reforms are interesting and he also wrote a witty satire called The Caesars. Whether his reforms would have succeeded had he lived, is hard to say.Β
Of course, the Christian argument as that he brought retribution on himself by his own actions! Β

Certainly the contrast between Julian's strong expedition and the Empire's feeble response to the Goths a decade later is striking.Something was going wrong!

I won't get into the religious argument but you would probably enjoy posting on Historum. Have you ever tried that forum?

Justinian did us a favor by getting rid of the Vandals and Ostrogoths. Were it not for the Persian Wars tying down most of Constantinople's armies, they would have done the same to the Lombards and Visigoths.

The plague did a great deal of damage, but most of it was past by the early 600s. The real damage was the incessant Wars between the ERE and Sassanid Persia.

MaurogDark [2015-01-26 19:43:28 +0000 UTC]

A classical Late Roman painting belonging to an era which was characterized by limited resources and memory, forcing Roman artists (known in Latin as paintiums) to resort to dynamic texture loading. Trying to memorize the entire picture would result in thrashing, so the clever paintiums remembered most details in lower resolution, closer details in high resolution, and for closest scenes they would even load the extra textures.
