Description The construction of the first Tesco in Wessex, Britain, in the late 9th century. A union representative, depicted wearing a coppergate helmet and a red cloak, looks on, as a supervisor instructs a construction worker about the location of the future cart-park. On the left, a Tesco employee is testing a new type of shopping trolley. In the background, two mounted scouts are keeping an eye out for any signs of Scandinavian invaders (IKEA). Painted for Medieval Warfare magazine.

I LOVE this picture, everyone tends to forget how cool the Anglo-Saxons were. Most people just think of them as the guys the sons of Ragnar beat to a pulp constantly, probably thanks to the "history" channel's viking show. Though, they did nearly loose the whole country.

King Aelfraed and his burghs must have pissed off a lot of Danes later on.

Nice work!

Thank you. I agree. Whether they won or lost, as long as they throw down they are impressive in my opinion.

Those damn Ikea invaders.
Very dark times over here in England indeed, if we can't even build our Tesco's without Ikea.

I have a routine now: At first, i start for a few minutes looking at your painting and seeing over all the details (in this case most impressing: The materiality, the feel of this red cloak).
Then, i scroll down to the description, feeling my jaw drop lower and lower, laughing my ass off (especially Β΄bout the nordic invaders).
Third, i contemplate a little about the possibility of having had you as a history teacher in school - I bet, every single pupil would have bought every single detail of your stories and possibly would have forgotten not one detail until now...talking about the power of combined words and sight

Did they really have handcarts back then?Β  Yeah, I know the wheel was invented long before, but they must have had to construct them on site or something.Β  Wheel barrows didn't exist until the 10th century (wiki on medieval inventions), and what frustrates me the most is that in Age of Empires 2, handcarts are a tech that comes after wheel barrows!

Yeah, you'd think the romans would have had wheelbarrows or something.Β  The use of the wheel is one of those more confounding things about technological history.

But - surely Aethelwulf and Offa had allowed construction of a chain of Tescos all along the Welsh March as early as the late C8th? Or were those perhaps Finefares?

Again, a simply splendid illustration.
