Hahaha, nope. If you only have one shin guard, you will try and protect the leg that you step forward with when fighting (left for right handed peeps)

Where do you learn stuff like that? I was always very curious what implications different armaments had and how it influenced combat. Any books on that subject?

I just picked it up along the way over the years, not just from books, but also from conversations, for example with battle reenactors, historians, museum visits etc. Books I can recommend include Osprey publications on medieval and ancient military subjects, also "Medieval Swordsmanship" by John Clements is a good read if you're interested in sword and shield. Generally when you start digging you pick up a trail of crumbs that takes you into some interesting places
