The next day after the coronation, the young Emperor spent his time walking about the sea coast, accompnied by the concubines. There he met a beautiful girl; long thin, web-like, hair covered her naked body, and her feet were whiter than the best oiran from Kyoto ever had. Yet, the maiden was mute, she couldn't reply any question he asked. However, her unhuman attractiveness spellbound the Emperor, so he chose her as his new concubine.
The new Emperor didn't care about his duties at all: for centuries there governed a shogun. The Emperor was fond only of painting pictures, walking with concubines and courtesans, eating and drinking. Days he spent observing his new concubine dance, fall in her tabi wettened with blood, yet rise again and again. She never showed him her milk-white feet again, as they hurt too much. Gradually other concubines taught Ningyo-san to read, write, dance, play the shamisen and also, fight with wakizashi. And yet... All the free minutes Ningyo-san passed walking abut the coast, easing pain in her feet with familiar waters and hearing the call of the sea...
Half a moon passed when the Emperor, in company of servants and concubines, which included Ningyo-san too, finally moved back to Honshu island, to the capital town Kyoto.
