Description

In 2176 the Federation entered a new era. The scars of the Romulan War gradually healed, the federation gained the reputation of a peacemaker, new worlds joined the alliance and more and more colonies were founded. The rapidly growing territory also means new challenges for Starfleet.

The infrastructure for longer supply routes had to be expanded and the more distant colonies defended. If Starfleet wanted to avoid unpleasant surprises, adjacent sectors had to be researched as quickly as possible.

Before new deep-space research vessels could be built, Starfleet had to be content with what was available in terms of man and material. The Daedalus class was mass-produced thanks to the Romulan War, and therefore numerous, so it was natural to convert some of them as research vessels. One of the first ships to be used for this project was the USS Euderion NCC-126.

The Euderion itself was equipped and rebuilt for its new use in February 2173 in the shipyard above Luna. In addition to the usual upgrades to weapons and sensors, the ship received a more efficient warp drive and more modern bussard collectors. During the upgrades, special attention was paid to the expansion of the entertainment systems and other amenities for the crew. It was feared that the morale of the crew could suffer too much on trips that were too long and trigger a so-called "ship frenzy". Among other things, for these reasons, the ship received an enlarged arboretum, an expanded sports area and, for the first time in the fleet, an experimental holosimulation system that was based on the system of befriended Xyrillians. The latter system is now known as the holodeck and is used on all of the deep space ships in Starfleet.

Under the project name "Expedition One" the Euderion started the first 3-year mission of Starfleet which later became the basis for the well-known 5-year research missions of the Constitution class.
