Description
My first full color photo manip for DA, and the first one involving more than two elements.Source Files:
Sky and Angel courtesy of ( see original pics [link] and [link] )
Tiger courtesy of ( see original pic [link] )
Thanks to these kind folks for providing such wonderful source material. Without them this would just be a running boy on a white background.
Model = my son ( see original pic [link] )
The wall, in my backyard, is from a photo I took today (see original pic [link] )
EDIT 12.26.04: I've revised this artwork, although the changes are rather subtle. I have softened the tiger, particularly the edges of his fur and his face, and I also increased his glow/reduced his contrast ever so slightly. Along with few random snowflakes in front of all of the ground based elements, and hopefully the tiger fits in much more naturally now. I also tried to make the translucent angel a little bit more realistic by adding some lighting elements to the forward wing. This made it a little bit larger, so I reduced her overall size by a few percent. Nipped and tucked a few other minor flaws. I'd be happy to hear any feedback as to whether these edits improved the piece or whether I should've just left well enough alone.
Thanks to everyone for the constructive comments and critiques, and a special thanks to and for specific, helpful suggestions and technical advice on how I might improve this piece

Thank you, WhiteWinterWolf! This piece is kind of open to interpretation. It has a personal meaning for me, but I think it could represent a lot of things. That was my goal, anyway... to allow the viewer to kind of "finish the story"

Wow... I like this one a lot. One thing, though - I'm not too convinced when it comes to the white pixels that are next to the boy (I think it was supposed to be snowflakes?). I don't know what they are or what's their role in this piece...

Thank you! Yes, those white pixels (supposed to be snow kicked up as he runs) are kind of my inexperience showing through... the technique I used to generate them didn't seem to want to let me adjust or soften... doh! I may need to climb back in there and try again

Thanks! Although if you look through my comments, you'll see I had some help along the way (this is the third version)... good folks who helped point out ways I could make the various elements blend together better.
I'm glad you it

Wow, this is amazing. Everything is so blended together so well! I love how it looks like a painting instead of a bunch of pictures pasted together. Very nice lighting as well. I also like the fact that he is able to pass the evil tiger thanks to the angel's (God?) help.
Hmm, some thing you could change though are the tigers left (his) wiskers are to white, and could look better if you braught the contrast and brightness down. By the boys right foot theres a bunch of white dots, maybe made with an airbrush. These kind of stand out to much, and the piece would be better without it.
Overall, I like this alot, +Fav.

Thank you so much for your encouraging remarks and especially for the fave
I also appreciate you taking the time for some constructive comments as well. I agree with you completely. If I go back into this piece, there are three things I want to fix, and you nailed two of them (the other being the rather vague and purposefully ill-defined footsteps). I'd like to keep the snow "spray" to suggest my son's movement through the snow, but I agree that as they are now, they are too sharp and distracting. Thanks

This reminds me of a dream I had recently whereby I strolled past a lioness who was feasting on a pork chop, snow began to fall and everywhere froze over.
I think you have a done a great job merging all the components into one fluid being. The outcome holds dreamlike qualities.

This really reminds me of a dream I had not so long ago when I strolled past a lioness who happened to be dining on a pork chop. Snow began to fall and everywhere became frozen over.
I think you have done a great job of merging all the compnents of this manipulation into one fluid being. The outcome is dreamlike.

My husband, *stumbleine179 , told me about this one last night. Is the angel supposed to be protecting the child? Or is this depicting a time when there will be peace between the animals and the humans?

Wow, thanks for the question... I must confess I've been dreading answering this one, because I've found at least six or seven different possible interpretations in it myself, everything between commentary on religious convictions and/or the lack, to commentary on my personal life... I will say that whether the piece works or not, every element was very deliberately placed in relation to all the rest.
I hesitate to offer any of my own readings of it, for fear of coloring yours. My hope is that, by focusing on iconography, and benefiting from such great source stock, this piece will allow the viewer to really bring their own story to it. For instance, your suggestion that it could reflect a time when there will be peace between animals and humans was one I had not thought of, and is very interesting for me to consider. In that context, perhaps the angel is a guardian angel, and looks away from a distance because her services are no longer needed--the child is safe. Neat!
Ummm... guess I didn't really answer your question very well... but thank you for spinning my mindwheels for me

You are welcome. It kind of did make me think of the scripture "The wolf will reside with the lamb... and a mere little boy will be leader over them all" and another one that talks about a child playing with a cobra and not getting harmed.
So for the fact that I was totally off.... I don't think I'd ever really interpret it for it's true personal meaning!

I'm just so pleased to hear that it gave you, or anybody, pause to think... what more can an artist ask for? But I don't think there's any one or right interpretation for iconographic works... the Lion and the Lamb-esque implications did occur to me as I put this together, so you certainly were not "off"... thanks again for taking the time to inquire and comment
