Description
Well last week before I got sick, I had 2 and a half hours btw classes, had borrowed some paleontology and nature illustration books from the library and I got bored and drew this. There's still another thing I wanted to add to it, though. This is just the page from my sketchbook. If anyone thinks it is actually useful I might consider fixing it... so let me know :/for one thing I wanted the top/underside of wing thing on the upper part to look different and i'm not sure if it really communicates. also there would maybe be a larger piece of how the feathers lie on the spread wing.
Hurr durr

Utterly useful. These can also be used for drawing "Fethery wings" in general like angels or stuff like that. And the skeletal structure can be used for anything winged since it's mostly the same. This is definitely useful.

Fix? In what sense?

As in, ink it and fix a couple areas I wasn't happy with, maybe expand upon it. This was literally right out of the sketchbook.

Oh I see. Yes, that does sound like "fixing".
Well there's no rush but here's hopin' it does happen sometime!

Thanks, I should be expanding upon and fixing it as well...

How awesomely useful! I constantly need like a thousand bird references whenever wings are involved, because I suck at drawing them. This will come in QUITE handy, I think.

I'll try to improve upon it, since this was just a sketch XD

You can do art from anything
I like how well you do wings, makes it seem easy to draw

Definitely worth revamping. A lot of my characters have bird wings and, quite frankly, I really cannot draw them. Please =3

Those wings may be useless but they make dinner all the easier to catch (~._.)~
Very educationifying, too. Randomly made me miss having cockatiels, too XD

you know, it's the Great Auk's own fault they went extinct. [link] strutting around all flightless, being delicious and tasty. >_< DAMN THEM

MMMMMMMM THEY LOOK TASTY. AND NUTRITIOUS. (~._.)~
Icky was reading something about animals that aren't endangered enough yesterday on cracked.com. I cannot but wonder if any of the rationales were "they look damn tasty".

Mmm duck. So tasty.
... So hungry D: We have a lack of uselessly winged birds in this apartment.

Awesome tutorial is awesome. I never really considered exactly HOW differentiated to make my avian wings, even though I'm totally obsessed with said wings and know basic outlines.

Hm...I'll admit, the skeletal system does point towards birds evolving from dinosaurs...
Pretty solid tutorial sketch, in any case; the main thrush (I'm assuming?) sketch looks really good.
(Also, penguins in general are useless, not just the wings. XD)

Oh and the bird is totally nonspecific, altho it looks something like a true sparrow or thrush or the like...

Interesting things, they've also found some dinosaurs with the beginnings of a 'keel' on the ribcage as well as the pygostyle (stubby bit on the tail that holds the feathers)
Penguins are good for being cute. isn't that enough for you???!!11

Abridgenator In reply to eva-st-clare [2009-10-24 20:26:07 +0000 UTC]
So they'd already started to develop the feathers? BANDs are starting to sweat.
This is true. XD (Seriously, ever heard of the Little Blue Penguin? Perfect example of useless but OMFG ITS IMPOSSIBLE FOR BIRDS TO BE THAT CUTE!!!)

eva-st-clare In reply to Abridgenator [2009-10-24 20:40:22 +0000 UTC]
Yes they are pretty sure that the ones with pygostyles had fans of display feathers on the tail. And as far as the wing and leg feathers, the fossil evidence is pretty clear (I've seen some of them in person, the Chinese deposits are extremely fine grained sediment)

recent one, with some short discussion on its significance.
[link] a few good photos of fossils that show clear feathers.
yes little Fairy Penguin ZOMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG *dies*

Abridgenator In reply to eva-st-clare [2009-10-24 20:49:48 +0000 UTC]
The leg structure I think is the strongest evidence to support the argument. And the display feathers do sound birdlike. (As do the arm/wing parrallels.)
Hehheh, there's a REASON the little blue's "penguin parade"
is such a big tourist draw.

How educating.
Though I used to draw wings differently, I came up with a few styles.

I've had some ppl tell me they had trouble drawing wings, so I kind wanted to draw something similar.
Not that I'm an expert on anything at all, but I've also owned pet birds for much of my life so it probably helps to have a close up view
