Kithood [0-5 moons]
Bristlefur and Redstorm had their eyes set on a family for moons, having been inseparable ever since they were apprentices, and after countless tries the Exalted finally blessed them with two tiny toms. Pinekit was the fluffier of the two, and Alderkit the lankier, but both were loved equally. The brothers were always seen as a pair and practically completed each other, Pinekit encouraging the shyer Alderkit to do new things while Alderkit kept Pinekit from taking things too far.
Redstorm was a very patient and informative mother while Bristlefur was always there to teach the kits lessons needed for clan life, both allowing them to discover themselves at their pace and fill their imagination with recounts from their patrols that day. When both parents were out doing their jobs, Bristlefur’s parents were there to keep an eye on the excitable kits. Whiteeye and Squirrelleap always had one or two stories to occupy their attention, often recounting battle tales and Whiteeye flaunting his massive face scar that he received while protecting their medicine cat from a falcon when he was a younger warrior. Pinekit’s grandfather had planted the seeds for his future dedication to protecting those he cared about.
Apprenticeship [6-12 moons]
Pinepaw was more than ready to become an apprentice, as was the nursery he had been stuck in for six moons. Alderpaw had taken note of his brothers attitude and was much more confident now, but that didnt stop the two from still needing each other. Pinepaw had discovered the joy of thrill. Thrill in hunting, thrill in stalking, thrill in scuffling, anything to give him that burst of heart pounding and muscle burning adrenaline. His mentor, Liontail, could hardly keep up with him. Much to Alderpaw and Liontails horror, Pinepaw had started doing risky things once his every day actions no longer gave him the same thrill. It wasnt uncommon for him to drop from trees to catch unsuspecting prey or even slide down the short cliff faces on their territory, the creator of the game Cliff Sliding.
Fortunately after a nasty fall and a few days in the medicine den Liontail was able to talk some sense into his rowdy apprentice. There was a time and place for these thrilling activities, as well as better ways. And how could Pinepaw become a warrior and protect his clan if he broke his neck before he was even ten moons? Other than his cravings for excitement, Pinepaw was an incredible apprentice and excelled in the challenges his mentor threw at him. He never purposely disobeyed those above him, but he did speak up when he felt he or another was wronged. Pinepaw hadnt caught it, but Alderpaw had began to resent his brother for blatantly putting himself in danger.
Warrior/Medicine Cat [12-28]
Pinepaw had become Pinestrike after a long six moons with his brother Alderfang. He was named for his exceptional fighting skills and took pride in it. He was well on his way to being a better protector for Hidden Grove and he itched to prove himself. His thrill seeking attitude hadnt changed, much to Alderfangs disgust, and if he had nothing to occupy himself he went looking for more possible things to feed his adrenaline craving. This resulted in him receiving an apprentice rather early in hopes that he could mellow out for their sake. Smallpaw wasnt his ideal apprentice at first, the little brown shecat would have rather spent her time cleaning the elders of ticks instead of learn how to back kick. She tested Pinestrike’s patience more than once, and she allowed him to take a step back and enjoy things at a slower pace. He got her to open up after moons of learning how she functioned and was able to pull out a very confident yet humble prey tracker. Smallsong had done a lot for Pinestrike, and became something like a younger sister to the red tom. He grew more aware of his actions thanks to Smallsong’s shy and careful personality as an apprentice and those close to him were able to see a change for the better in him. Except for Alderfang.
Not long after Smallsong was made a warrior Pinestrike was on a patrol with Bristlefur and Redstorm, Alderfang being too busy training his still apprentice to join their early morning bonding. Tragedy struck suddenly and the three cats were attacked by a badger coming down from Alp’s Peak’s territory and Pinestrike watched helplessly in an injured heap as his parents gave up their lives for him. They succeeded in scaring the badger off, and Pinestrike managed to stay conscious long enough to beg for his content parents to not die until the light left their eyes. He woke up days later in the medicine den, sore and covered in sickly sweet smelling herbs and cobwebs. His recovery was normal for a cat with his injuries and allowed for half a moon of quiet reflection on what he could have done and what he couldnt change. With support from his grandparents and Smallsong he recovered with very little emotional issues, but he could feel Alderfang was struggling with the loss of their parents. Pinestrike had tried to spend time with him and comfort him, but the lanky tom wouldnt have it. When he was well enough to patrol again, Pinestrike and Alderfang were sent out in one together. Alderfang snapped on him, moons of resentment for his risky attitude had, in his mind, caused the death of their loving parents. He refused to believe Pinestrike had changed and attacked him with intent to kill. The deadly squabble ended with Alderfang’s throat crushed between Pinestrikes jaws and those in that patrol would still be unable to describe the heart breaking noise that came from the living brother after he had done so. He wasnt faulted, if anything pitied, and walked away with a torn ear and an even bigger hole in his heart.
Pinestrike continued his duties with dignity, recovering from his new emotional wounds, and catching the eye of the deputy, Neetleclaw. He was given a new apprentice, Adderpaw, in an attempt to focus his energy into making another prized warrior. Adderpaw was much more energetic than Smallsong ever was, and made Pinestrike appreciate the calmness of the shecat. But he showed the young tom as much love and support as he showed Smallsong, but this time taught him what Liontail taught him. When Adderpaw was taking his final test Pinestrike and the deputy were following along in secret as was standard. But while Adderpaw was stalking a squirrel he had no idea he too was being stalked. Pinestrike caught sight of the falcon before the deputy and lunged out without a second though as it swooped at his apprentice. Neetleclaw and even Adderpaw once he knew what was happening managed to help scare the bird off, and that was when the deputy decided Pinestrike would be his deputy once he was made leader.
Deputy [28-38]
Which, unfortunately, was sooner than expected as the leader, Hollystar, died of an infection caused by an awful rat ambush when inspecting a strange twoleg object left near their territory, wiping out her last two lives. Pinestrike was shocked to become deputy, but his grandparents and Smallsong and Adderstripe would say they werent if asked. Neetlestar didnt let Pinestrike pause for a moment and began teaching him how to set up patrols, pick jobs for the cats, and praised him as if he were his mentor. Pinesrike lived for his encouragement and the two spent more and more time together, becoming very close friends. Unfortunately it only lasted about two seasons before Neetlestar became ill with some sort of festering mouth injury. It took his ability to talk, and eventually his ability to see, and eating was almost impossible. Pinestrike had to step up much sooner than he planned as a fill in Leader and he spent what time he could comforting the tom and telling him what gathering drama he could. Eventually, Neetlestar lost all his lives to the unknown and incurable illness, and Pinestar was given his lives by him, Bristlefur, Redstorm, and other cats he once knew in life. But Alderfang was nowhere to be seen.
