This portrait reminds me of the historical figure, Boudica.Β When you get a chance, look her up. An amazing woman by all accounts.Β What I see in this woman's expression is "Who are you to judge me? I, the Queen of the Iceni, who watched my daughters raped before me by your Legionnaires. I, who watched my people butchered, our lands defiled and salted, and our worship of our gods scorned by such as you?Β You Romans, who are venal, honor-less, and greedy, you mock and judge me and my people? You Romans, that barely pay your due service to your gods? We will see who wins in the end."
Yep, Boudica was an amazing woman and a red head! I see dignity in the face of treachery and deceit, courage in the face of daunting odds.Β I see a woman who brought the fight to the most powerful nation in the world at that time...but, sadly,Β the Iceni and their allies lost, in the end. But not before Queen Boudica, her daughters, and the men and women she commanded laid waste to entire cities of Romans.Β

I want to let you know that this one is a drawing that I keep coming back to look at and that I think about often. I don't know why but it somehow really made an impression, and always had me wonder more about the woman. I love art that touches!
