Not "art" technically, but again, I'm sure parody is art in some form. So, they decided Megas would elevate Pokemon to the class of LEGENDARY, and it was decided based on looks, popularity, and 'game balance'. Apparently they only factored in the first two with Garchomp.Related content

Where did you find the screenshot at the top of the image? I didn't think GameFreak had laid out a defined selection process for Pokemon that receive Mega Evolutions.

Good point! X3 The same can be said about others, such as Gengar and Mewtwo.
Chandelure (my favourite poke) is a prime example that I really feel Game Freak missed out. It's the most popular Gen V poke in Japan and a lot of people use it despite it unfortunately being considered "medicore". :S T_T
I have mixed views on mega-evolution. On one hand it does make gameplay more exciting and interesting, plus I really love Mega-Gengar so much, it's one of the coolest things I've seen in Pokemon. However, I give GF a thumbs down for being unfair by not giving all pokemon mega-evolutions, and I find a lot of megas quite hideous. :SΒ

Don't. Even. Get. Me. Started. I HATE Mega Gengar. Well, to be more accurate, I love using it. I hate having it used ON me. When it came to Megas, it seemed Game Freak only gave them to the first four generations, the "old" Pokemon. Chandelure (it's one of the few Generation V Pokemon I actually like) would be AWESOME with a Mega Evolution, so maybe next generation.
Personally, I'm fine with Mega Evolution, and while I wish all of them had it, they have their reasons for choosing who they choose. I think we should just be happy Pikachu didn't break the rules and get a Mega Evolution, eh?

Ahaha...I see XP And yes, Mega Chandelure would be so cool X3
That is true, however I can name numerous pokes which I feel should've got the mega treatment as so for "game balance". Assuming that there is going to be a Z version in the future, then I hope Game Freak won't leave me disappointed.Β

Mega Charizard X would be ideal. They're both dragons, but Charizard might be faster in it's Mega Form, which could give it the edge

True, I'm aware it is slow. But speed isn't everything, if it's defensive stats are decent, it can use it's immense offensive power to slaughter it's poor opponents while tanking shit. Those red claws? They used to be WHITE

TomorrowsArchon In reply to EverlastingDarkness5 [2013-10-01 23:34:37 +0000 UTC]
It has higher attack and special attack, so assuming all non-pseudo Megas hit 600 BST, Mega Garchomp might hit 680 BST. I predict 180 physical attack and 130 special attack and 82 speed. As for your argument, yes, but I reckon Mega Mawile can tear him a new asshole (not even fairy-typing mind you). I'm a huge fan of both :[
Also, its claws are now drenched in the blood of its former opponents! MWHAHAHA!

EverlastingDarkness5 In reply to TomorrowsArchon [2013-10-03 19:42:51 +0000 UTC]
Typing isn't all there is to a battle either. A super-effective attack can still deal mediocre damage when levels and stats are factored in. If the Mega Mawile is too weak, Mega Garchomp will make mincemeat out of it, Fairy or not
π: 0 β©: 1
TomorrowsArchon In reply to EverlastingDarkness5 [2013-10-03 19:46:40 +0000 UTC]
Good predictions factor though. It's never definite who prevails. Garchomp can use Earthquake or Fire Blast to kill Mawile, but she might have Sucker Punch. Likewise, if the opponent predicts Sucker Punch, they may use Swords Dance or switch out.

Exacta. Luck and chance are major factors in battles; hell, some of my victories can be attributed to my opponent making a fuck-up somewhere that gave me an edge

This seems like a really good point, considering Garchomp is already a pseudo-legendary and all, but let's not forget, Dragon type PKMN are now weak against Fairy Type attacks, so...

EverlastingDarkness5 In reply to AdioXGen [2013-10-01 06:36:11 +0000 UTC]
Yes, but type isn't all that decides a battle. It is entirely possible to overpower a Pokemon you have a type disadvantage against, especially since Mega Evolution is meant to boost a Pokemon into the class of legendary Pokemon, if we want to talk power, when it comes to Fairies, only Xerneas stands a chance

TomorrowsArchon In reply to EverlastingDarkness5 [2013-10-01 18:22:11 +0000 UTC]
And even then, you can run as many legendaries as you want, but you can have only one Mega Garchomp.

Lemme quote TVTropes:
- While Garchomp is mentioned above in the entry on Dragons, it really deserves an entry to itself - it's easily one of the most powerful non-legendary PokΓ©mon ever created. It possesses an excellent Attack, one of the best possible offensive typings in the gamenoteΒ , very good Speed, and decent defenses for an offensive PokΓ©mon.
- In addition to that, in Platinum, the Strength boulders blocking the path to the secret area of the Wayward Cave are removed, allowing you to get GibleΒ as early as before you even get your third badge. You could also go through the entire path to find the TM26 for Earthquake, too, and all you need to do for that is to shift your bike to the fast gear and jump some slopes.
- The most popular item for Garchomp is the Yache Berry. It cuts the effectiveness of Ice-type attacks, Garchomp's only major weakness. This allowed it to get a Swords Dance off and practically guaranteed one or two KOs before Garchomp goes down. Which ties into the reason why Chompy gotΒ Kicked Upstairs Β into Ubers; in its heyday; it reduced practical diversity to the point where nearly every team that stood a chance was forced into something like this: Garchomp, Garchomp Counter x2, Counter-Garchomp-Counter x2, filler.
- An even more hated version is BrightPowder-Chomp. Using Garchomp's Sand Veil ability (opponent accuracy is cut to 80%) and adding an additional 10% for the item means that attacks hit him a maximum of 72% of the time in sandstorm, which by the way is painfully easy to set up (all you need is a Tyranitar). All you need to do is Substitute repeatedly until you dodge an attack, Swords Dance, and sweep. This is all made even easier because Garchomp can switch-in and force out most PokΓ©mon because of how impossibly threatening it was. If you switch out while Chomp subs, gg.
- Despite the fact that Generation 5 brought more ways to check Garchomp, it got banned. Again. Even with checks such as Air-Balloon Heatran who could come in on any attack and take it out as long as Garchomp wasn't hiding behind a Substitute with an Ice-type Hidden Power, if Garchomp WAS hiding behind a Substitute, it didn't stand a chance. In fact, the combination of Substitute and Swords Dance in a sandstorm was a menace to anyone who couldn't break the substitute and take out Garchomp before it boosted too much or set up another substitute. Though unlike the previous generation in which Sand Veil was the straw that broke the camel's back, Sand Veil was entirely the reason for Garchomp's ban this time and once it got Rough Skin and Sand Veil itself was banned, it was allowed once again.
- And then as of Generation 6,Β it got a Mega Evolution . Which not only has boosted offensive power, but theΒ Sand Force Β ability. The biggest saving grace is that it's slower than regular Garchomp.

Let me explain. Mega Evolution, a temporary evolution in battle that gives a Pokemon massive power-ups. They decided the apparent best thing to do was take Garchomp, who is a already more powerful than it oughtta be, and MAKE IT STRONGER

Something tells me Gamefreak didn't consider the consequences of making an already-powerful Pokemon into an absolute monster again.
