Lucky's world shattered the night her father died in a tragic car crash when she was only 8 years old. Her grandfather, Zach Thompson, stepped in and offered to take care of both Lucky and her mother, but Merci had emotional issues of her own.

Nursing a drug addiction and alcoholism, Merci vanished with her daughter, only to move them 3,000 miles to the east coast. Lucky's world was never quite right. It seemed that, unlike most children, her imaginary childhood friends didn't disappear as she got older.

By the time she was 18, Lucky had been plagued by a whole battery of well-meaning school counselors, psychiatrists, and the occasional prescription writing doctor. But, when her best friend commits suicide, Lucky decides she's had enough and just wants to go home.

And so, with nothing but the clothes on her back, a backpack, and an old US map, she sets off on foot to make the 3,000 mile trek all the way home to the mountains of California.
