Hey guys. Everything2004 here. So today, I rewatched all the important scenes in Sodor’s Legend of the Lost Treasure for this deviation to explain my honest thoughts on the subplot with Thomas and The Fat Controller. Now please remember, this all my opinion. This is not meant to be fact. I am just explaining why I think the way I do, so if your opinion is different, that’s fine. I can handle your opinion, just please handle mine. Now, with that out of the way, let’s get started.

So my honest thoughts of the subplot between Thomas and The Fat Controller in Sodor’s Legend of The Lost Treasure is that the two are both in the wrong. Yes, you heard me right. While I agree what Thomas does in this movie is wrong, what The Fat Controller does to Thomas isn’t much better. How so, you ask? Well, let me explain.

Starting with the express incident, I agree what Thomas does here is wrong. He does insult Gordon first by calling him lazy. If you’re insulting someone like Gordon, you’re pretty much asking for a fight. Also, Thomas should have ignored Gordon’s “silly little tank engines” comment, but instead, he chose to do something even worse. He derails expensive express coaches, and blocks nearly all of the main lines, delaying lots of trains! To add insult to injury, he tries lying his way out of the situation! So I completely understand why The Fat Controller punishes Thomas.

However, I see a problem with the way The Fat Controller does it. Not the punishment itself, but the way he does it. All he says to Thomas is that it was him who caused the accident and that’s it. Does he explain to Thomas why it is his fault, and why what he did was worse than what Gordon did to him? No. He doesn’t. So how is Thomas supposed to learn if what he did isn’t actually addressed properly?

Now for the cavern incident. I agree Thomas wasn’t being very smart here. He shouldn’t have jumped in where he didn’t belong. He should have asked permission to take the supplies first, as well as where the supplies were going.

However, once again, the way The Fat Controller handles it is not good. I don’t think Thomas is necessarily lying on that time. Rather, I think he’s telling The Fat Controller what he thinks happened. Maybe he didn’t hear the workmen’s warning (Granted, Thomas should have looked back to listen, but still). He’s not correct obviously, but it’s what he thinks happened. Also, I feel like dismissing Thomas the way he does is not the way to teach kids a lesson. I completely understand that The Fat Controller is trying to make Thomas learn, but that’s just not the way to do it. If you’re a parent, and you dismiss your kid the way The Fat Controller dismisses Thomas in that scene is going to give kids the message that their parents just don’t care about them, and let’s be real. Does a parent want their child to hate him/her? No! Absolutely not!

Now for the big one, the dynamite incident. Yes, Thomas should NOT have tricked Ryan into taking on bad coal, but what The Fat Controller does to Thomas is too far. He outright accuses Thomas of trying to kill Ryan! I’m sorry, but no. That’s not right. Thomas isn’t the nicest engine, but he’s not cruel! He would never, ever intentionally try to murder an innocent engine, even if he didn’t like said engine! Also, isn’t not learning the full story too far, even a little?! True, it wouldn’t have changed much since Thomas tricked Ryan into taking on bad coal, but still. So basically, The Fat Controller makes the same mistake he does after the cavern incident. Like I said, giving your kids the message that they don’t matter is just not right at all! I completely understand why The Fat Controller is doing this to Thomas, but I can’t condone it!

Now for my thoughts on the two characters in this movie as a whole. Let’s start with Thomas. Now, I am not saying it’s out of character for him to get arrogant or cheeky, but it is out of character for him to lie. Why does he lie to The Fat Controller? There’s no reason. No reason at all, so it makes his lying completely ridiculous and a step backwards in character development! Same goes for his conflict with Ryan. As for The Fat Controller, I completely understand why he behaves the way he does in this movie. What Thomas does is despicable, so The Fat Controller’s reactions are completely understandable! I just feel they aren’t justified because of what I stated earlier. So, the best way I can describe The Fat Controller in this movie is that this movie treats him like he’s perfect when he’s not.

Now, I get Thomas’ character arc in this movie. I do. CrovanWorks explained it perfectly.

“He starts of as all arrogant and when he causes a mess he tries to pass it on to someone else, that pisses the Fat Controller off and he punishes Thomas appropriately. Then after the song "NOALE" boosts his ego, he gets cocky and ignores the danger signs and the warnings, thinking he knows everything. He falls down the cavern and when rescued he again makes an excuse and tries to pass it on to someone else. The Fat Controller who's already cheesed off is further annoyed at Thomas for making an excuse rather than taking responsibility. This is why in the dynamite scene that everyone says TFC was too harsh, Thomas was making another excuse. Instead of saying "sorry" he constanly says "It's not my fault", which just annoys TFC further, all he wants is for Thomas to take responsibility, but he hasn't three times now. And if you think about it, Thomas tricked Ryan into using the Bad coal so regardless of his heroism, he caused the incident with the dynamite. At the end of the movie, Thomas finally says, "I'm sorry sir" which is what the Fat Controller has been waiting to hear. Thomas finally resposibilitiy for his actions and the Fat Controller forgave him. That and Thomas' heroism at the end. TFC doesn't need to apologise because he did nothing wrong.”

And I completely understand what the writers were going for with this movie. This movie is intending to teach kids the consequences of not taking responsibility for your actions and the importance of taking responsibility for your actions. I just don’t think think this was the way to do it.

But of course, this is all my opinion. Not fact. You can disagree with me all you want. Just handle my opinion please. Also, to quote PixarFan2015, “Can we please not fight with these scenes?”

Like PixarFan2015, I too get upset when people fight over these scenes. If you hate The Fat Controller in this movie, that’s fine! If you defend The Fat Controller, that’s also fine! Just please handle differing opinions! It’s been seven years now! This is Everything2004, signing off.
