A bit of a weird suggestion...but how about Pipsqueak? (Several decades in the future, when he's all grown up, of course.)

Pipsqueak goes from being class president at his school, to becoming interested in politics in general,. By the time he's an adult, he's earned a cutie mark for his leadership talents, and is moving in Canterlot's political and social circles. Determined to make a difference, and change pony society for the better, his scrupulous ethics and drive to do what's fair makes him both friends and enemies amongst his peers.

It's this job that eventually brings him and Princess Luna back together, when he's granted an audience with the Royal Sisters. Both Pipsqueak and Luna are ponies that value the people they serve, and take their duties seriously, so they remain polite and coolly professional throughout the meeting...but on the inside, both are internally cringing, and respectively thinking: "Oh sweet Celestia, here I am trying to look professional and discuss business, and the last time she saw me, I was barely a year old and dressed as a pirate! She must think I'm a fool!" and "The time I saw him, I was barely adjusted from my return from the moon. I caused chaos most unbefitting of a Princess, and scared the child terribly! Now he's fully-grown, he must think me incompetent!" 

Their duties throw them together several more times however (and, perhaps, just perhaps, a certain Princess realises that her sister is talking rather a lot about this handsome young stallion and his brilliant plans, and contrives a few extra meetings to get them alone together), and eventually, one of them awkwardly brings up their first meeting all those years ago. Awkwardness turns into surprise, then laughter, once they realise the other was just as embarrassed by the situation. Slowly, their relationship changes from awkwardly to professional, to genuinely fond of and comfortable around one another...and eventually results in Starbreaker, who inherits her father's patchy coat.
