I know a lot of people miss the hot-headed serious Kai, and I do too but I think I have a theory on why he's so jokative in Dragons Rising.

In part 2 of season 1 we saw him teach Wyldfyre how to relax and react calmly to serious situations. He said he learned this after his sister turned into the ocean which didn't make a whole lot of sense because we saw how he reacted after Nya turned into the ocean he did not find inner peace he was just as angry as ever. I think it makes sense if he took Wu's lesson to heart after the merge and he was all alone. Kai, just like all the ninja, has been through A LOT in his life. We know he respects a positive attitude because of season 9 when he has Jay explain to young Wu the power of a joke. I think it makes sense that after all these years he's tired of being angry so this time he's trying to be more positive.

I think that's good character development, if they established it as such.
