Description
So four months ago when part one of Dragons Rising came out I wrote a VERY long description about my thoughts on that part and why I think they should bring Akita back. If you want to read it you can go here and laugh about how bad my art was 4 months ago (www.deviantart.com/eviedrawsst… ). I knew I wanted to do the same for part 2, and by some miracle I managed to finish the drawing today so why not do it tonight before I go home for fall break. So without any further ado, MY THOUGHTS ON DRAGONS RISING PART 2!I want to like you Dragons Rising, I really want to like you. And I do, just not enough. You have so much potential but you keep missing the mark. I get it's a new show and it needs a while to get its land legs but it keeps creating these great scenarios but also keeps shooting itself in its foot. Seeing the trailers I was so excited to see the duos they've created but they didn't really take advantage of their team up! Why the HECK didn't Nya and Sora have a conversation about Sora's power considering that NYA was the ninja who had the hardest time learning how to use her power and also questioned if she even had one too? No, it was much more important to help this djinn get his mojo back. And sure that character was very enjoyable (though I find it a bit strange how willing Nya was to help him considering everything with Nadakahn) but those two bonding was much more important and we never got it! Or what about Kai and Wyldfyre? I'm sorry but they needed an entire episode dedicated to them learning to get along instead of it just being a side-plot. As it is they're relationship, while cute, is very rushed. That's honestly my biggest complaint with this season, it felt very rushed, and yet SO padded. How do you do that!? Take Lloyd saving Rapton and taking the impossible walk. Sure it was funny joke but it didn't accomplish anything. They don't use that knowledge to their advantage nor does the gesture put them in Rapton's good graces. He still hates the ninja and only teams up with them later because he saw them as the lesser of two evils. I don't usually mind padding much if they're entertaining AND if they don't take away time from the more important elements. The padding in this show does and it drives me crazy!
I find the greatest strength of the original series are the characters and their connections to one another, they are a family tasked with saving the world over and over and again. And they do it, all while lifting each other up along the way. This series has great characters both old and new. I love Arin, Wyldfyre, Jordana, and if anything happens to Frohicky I will RIOT. (I do like Sora but I have some reservations on her character as a whole that keep me from loving her. Though I have a feeling that will change in future seasons.) They've made good characters but I don't think they're using them to their true potential nor or they that focused on showing their relationships with other characters. They just do the bare minimum in showing their connection while the original went above and beyond.
I was let down by this season, but I can't say I didn't at all enjoy myself. I will be watching the next part when it comes out. I'm way to into the Ninjago hole to quit now, and I am looking forward to see what they'll be doing now. Watching this part I kept thinking to myself how Raz and Jordana would make much better villains then Beatrix and lo and behold: What was the the hook for the next season? Yeah, I'm pretty pumped for that.
I want to love this series like I do the original series and I hoping that this show will pull it off.
Oh, and let it be known that Frohicky is the best part of this new series.
Yet again if you read this all you're a trooper.
