WOW! I'm choked up! I just finished reading the story and it's choked me up! I lost a very dear childhood friend to Sickle Cell Anemia attack that was misdiagnosed as the 'Flu'. She was sent home with instructions to take two extra strength Tylenol and get some rest. Sadly she lost consciousness in the Examining Room due to a flood of pain from another oncoming Sickle Cell Attack and never woke up. It took an hour for the idiots to realize she was dead.

I look at it this way: She's at peace now, she doesn't have to worry about her pills or the next painful attack or having to explain that she doesn't have the flu or that no one is abusing her when she shows up with unexplained sudden bruises. I can't count the number of times people have called CPS on her parents claiming they were abusing her when a feather could land on her and leave a bruise. Just brushing by something left a bruise on her. When everyone else was in shorts and sleeveless shirts, she was always in long shirts and pants since not only did she bruise easily,she got sun burn quite quickly another draw back of having Sickle Cell Anemia the sun hates you.
