Description
The original idea was that I was going to paint a series of monsters for encounters for a rpg game of some description. This monster was designed some time ago and painted toward the end of last year. I was and am still experimenting to refine a digital style and the technique used here and in other pieces in this series represent a birthing of the style. Unfortunately I haven't had the time or inclination to return the series with other projects, thus it remains unfinished. The creature is a Ghostleaf Crescent Beetle, a large predatory insect which uses its large claws for burrowing and ambush in the forests where it makes its home.
The transfer between computer killed the colours, I corrected them as best I could. Although this image is obviously still Work In Progress, I would appreciate critiques. Thank you
(And holy crap I wrote a description)

Wow! Amazing work! Love it!
I was wondering if you could let me us this image for a non-commercial Android game called "Kingdoms of Myth", it's turn based strategy game based on a fantasy World. You can find a little bit more info in our facebook page www.facebook.com/kingdomsofmyt⦠).
Of course you will have full credits of your work and link to your webpage.
Just for clarifying the non-commercial game, we are not going to sell it and of course we donβt plan to make money or advertisement with your picture.
Lot of thanks for your time

Yes - I noticed the "horn" too - almost like a codpiece. Still, my mind wanders the gutter territory of the earth, so it is to be expected. Like the colours - have you tried savaging it with a hue and saturation adjustment?
All in all a grat intimidating beastie - well rendered.

Ha ha It does resemble a codpiece actually!
The two monitors at my house are very different in their results and often I do not know how the picture will come out until I actually post it. It is a very annoying aspect of posting online. Although I play around with the tonal values and saturation, the colours often slightly skewed from what I wanted.

Yes I understand your pain - I work on PC at home and Mac at work - so my Mac stuff always looks darker on the PC. The only way you can fix that is using a standard colour space - but even then every monitor views slightly differently (even when they're not suposed to). Does it print out okay?

I really love your concept!
You shading is great. Very natural.
The earthlike colors are well chosen
and the tiny little rim light on the left gives this piece a nice touch of extra depth.

Still refining my digital technique but I think I am slowly taking steps in the right direction. Thanks for your comment.

Whoo, what a critter! I really like the woody textures on this guy; given that this is a forest dweller, it makes sense that he'd want some camouflage--nice work. The style is looking really good, I think. It's ever so encouraging to see so many people branching out C:.

Nice to see some coloured beasties up here. The textures are working well, plus there's a nice sense of depth and enough contrast to attract the eye from the claw to the neck. Looking good and foresty (my kinda guy eh)

Not sure if you had seen these WIPs before or not. Dead leaf litter and gnarled wooden forms are the driving motivation behind the texture of this guy.

*laughs* Yeah it isn't the first time I've heard that. The abdomen curls back around onto the to give the creature a rather spherical shape. It has something to do with the location of the territorial scent glands.

here's one with claws.

i'm not trying to suggest a copyright infringement or anything just giving you a heads up. k?
anyway.
if you did come up with the design by yourself it is a classic and looks well drawn.

Well that is a troubling little design development.
I had seen some tyranid concept art in years past but not those particular models. I suppose in drawing from nature as influence, I have come to similar conclusions as the game designers. Still it is concerning. Thanks for the notification.

I say ignore the damn tyranids and continue to grow like a mushroom in a bubble... long live the bubble.
PS an idea is an idea. Like the beetle it will evolve... in your case probably into some world eating carniverous space turnip, but Darwin never said evolution was sensible.
