Edit-OH MY GOD DAILY DEVIATION THANK YOU
I thought it was an error when I woke up and had so many feedback messages!
This is definitely one of my favorite things I've ever designed, and I'm glad so many other people like it too!
Thank you to Lilyas for featuring, and everyone else for your support!

For the Monthly Theme.
Contest description:
Insect-O-Gram
"Message delivered by insect."
With autumn closing in and summer being at its peak we've decided to go with a more wacky theme this time around. Here's what you have to do - gather your gear (goggles, binoculars, cameras, the usual spying stuff) and start observing because you've got to come up with... insect haute couture! This challenge is all about designing an haute couture outfit inspired by the insect of your choice - mantises, beetles, pretty much whatever you can think of (except butterflies because that would be too easy and we wouldn't want that, would we?) in order to make your entry as original and as colorful as possible. Accessories required.
Include in your artist's comment:
- The name of your insect of choice and a short description
- The reason you chose it
- And a brief description of your design.
The insect I chose was the Spiny Flower Mantis, as depicted by in this lovely photo: [link]
I chose it because I was first drawn to the rainbow-colored wings, and also loved the swirls, spiked claws, and the crazy patterned body. I knew this insect would give me a lot to work with so I could be more crazy and creative with the design instead of staying more literal.
I loved the rainbow aspect, and wanted to play that up a bit more than in the actual insect, but I still wanted to stay true to it. The overskirts and shirred ruffles are inspired by the wings, the segmented and quilted parts are inspired by the body, the spikes are inspired by the claws, and the mesh is inspired by the texture of the wings.
Because the dress is so colorful and over the top, I thought it would be best to give my girl some simple black hair, but I threw on some "bug-eye" glasses to top off the look.
The diamonds on the skirt were inspired by the flaps (I don't know the technical term) hanging off the mantis's rear, and I pictured them being some sort of shiny thin plastic, creased down the middle. All the small red dots are gemstones. The skirt body and top I pictured being out of a shiny lycra spandex, so it would give off a little shimmer, quilt well, and fit really snugly. The rainbow ruffles are ombre dyed pleated organza.
I made the bag more conservative than the outfit because, in theory if this look was ever to be made (which honestly, I'm not sure is possible), I know most people wouldn't have a practical use for such a dress, so the bag could be something they would buy and actually use. I tried to pull elements from the entire design and simplify them down into something more mainstream.
Additionally, I was inspired by this dress by Thierry Mugler: [link]
And Lady Gaga's Living Dress: [link]
Like I said, I don't know if this is even possible to make, and if it is, it would be horribly expensive, but hey, the challenge said "haute couture", so I figured I'd have as much fun as I could before I go back to school and have to design things that people can actually wear
Sadly I ran out of time while working on this, so it's not as polished as I'd like it to be, but I love how the design came out, so when I have time I'll probably finish it up and make a nice background and such, and then resubmit it.
EDIT-
I won! Again!
Thank you everyone so much for your support!
Here's the lovely description they gave it
"Haute couture at its peak, a beautiful example of creativity at its utmost! Considering that the insect in question was not a particularly easy subject to interpret it is a truly impressive achievement and the designer's approach is pleasantly surprising. A very commendable effort that deserves our highest appreciation!"

This is very different and very bright! I agree with what you said earlier, you walk into so many stores at the moment and it's full of beige and apricot and colours that are just out and out depressing (plus they only suit certain skin tones). Colour should be welcome in the world not hidden and if people think it's too colourful that's just too damn bad. It's not like you're asking them to wear it are you! I know it's hard to get nasty reviews from people, but as you said you can't please everyone so don't let it get you down. Your work is different and I like that about it, I think the design is lovely. Oh and as for the anatomy being disproportionate, well people have you ever seen a model??? They're generally not in proportion and since they're usually the ones wearing a design first sadly designers have to cater for that. It looks like you're having fun with your work and that's what matters, how many people in the world can honestly say they enjoy their work?? The bulk of people hate what they do or are miserable in their jobs so if you've found something you truly enjoy that's great for you.
I only have one criticism, aside from the visible arm and maybe the glasses I'm not really seeing insect. I'm sorry, I see other things and as I said the design is lovely but I'm not seeing insect. Then again I'm not a designer or an artist in the traditional sense so don't take my word for it.
Good luck with your designs, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this on Lady Gaga

I'll be honest, its not something I would wear. However, I find it to be interesting and unique at the same time. I glanced through the comments and say what some of the trollers said and I must agree with you. There are too many cloths out there in dark colors and it wouldn't kill for there to be some brighter ones. All and all I think its a good piece of work :3

I have no idea what those trolls were thinking when they commented on your piece. And maybe I'm really glad that I don't understand. Although at first I thought "this design is really strange" when I saw it, the more I look at it the more interesting I find it to be. Yeah, so maybe the coloring is a little rough, but who cares? It's fashion design, not frickin' da Vinci. I love how the entire thing is one giant bright pop of color... it's so cheerful! Although, after I took a look at the photo, I was wondering if maybe it's possible to incorporate just a little bit of darker color for the sake of greater contrast to make it even more dramatic? But I've no experience with clothing design, so please ignore if I'm not making sense or something ;u; And I really enjoyed reading the concept/materials used, things like that. It really feels like you put a lot of effort into everything, from concept to completion! Totally DD-worthy, imho.

Fashion wise, the one thing i wish you would add is a sub drawing showing the other glove... maybe show the arm faded out at the shoulder in a separate area
or even add the elbow coming up from behind the skirt, or even a separate drawing showing just the arm linked back to here so people can see it... But don't get me wrong i still love it, I just want to know what the other glove looks like [seeing it is different then the other arm makes me curious

Hmm, good idea!
Usually I add a flat sketch of the entire garment on the side, but this one was so complicated that I didn't think it was worth the effort.

whew glad i said that right i love the picture and was just curious what the other glove or hand looked like
. its a really original design, added complement -> the colors almost make me think of "Jem and the holograms" [which was kinda a fashion cartoon] which is a nice touch [in my opinion]
Sorry by the way how some people reacted negatively, i think its really just them upset over their own issues. They are the missing out...

Oh my lord. Can I say "immature asshole"? Maybe not. But I did. So there.
Seriously, have any of you seen fashion design/costume design? It's meant to be unique and different. As the artist has said MULTIPLE times this isn't meant for something you'd wear tp pick your pre-schooler up from a play date.
Moreover, the point of DA is to help artists to grow, not to little people who feel so small and insignificant that they must comment negatively on others' artwork bash people because they don't agree. If it was that, this would be called myspace. And all the artwork would be stolen. >.>" There's a difference between leaving a tasteful comment and a rude comment. If you don't agree with the DD, pardon my language, but... Grow the hell up. Seriously. If you're a twenty-something plus year old and you're leaving rude comments on someone's art, it makes you look like a 3 year old. And if you're a supposed "professional", what would your boss or your clients think if they saw this? They probably wouldn't think very highly of you.
There are artists of every level and ability and type on this website. It wasn't made just for the elite or just for photographers or just for people who write stories. It was made for everyone.
There is enough drama in the real world that I really don't think that we need to cause more of it on a website. (: Unless you don't have a life in the real-world. In which case I pity you a great deal. (;
Now that that's out of the way....
I love this design. I love the colors especially. I wasn't too big on the polka dots, but other than that.. Spot on. (;

This...this is TOO lady gaga...for me anyway. It's just some random shapes put together with no meaning and here's why:
1.) The structure It's not that I don't like it, but it is impossible. I agree with Mrs. Infinite Numbers down there XD, The anatomy is extremely poor, no one could ever wear it. It's so extremely slim that Gaga couldn't fit one leg down there! Plus it gives off a very lizard, if not snake-like appearance.
2.) The skirt Its meh. Really the skirt is a bit too poofy and long at the back; like that part is not really needed I don't think I don't know, its IMHO, it be either way, or just have a part at the back. It is an interesting touch on it though, it's what keeps it from being a boring dress. (semi-boring)
3). The diamonds and stripes.OMG. can you say eye-popping? In a good and bad way. They spark and stick out, giving it a sharp (if I may say ) finish at the trim of the dress but then again adding unneeded mass at the place where there should be just that, finishing touches. So I say raise 'em up a bit. The stripes on the other hand, WAAAYYYYY TO MUCH. You need only one layer there, not two, simplify it a bit!! Not everywhere has to have some sort of design or pattern on it. It could just be one stripe pattern and then some diamonds, I don't need to see the entire milky way just on the bottom of her skirt!!
4.) The COLORS!!!! Where do I start.....I don't even know where to look at first, everywhere screams for my attention like a rainbow banshee....Too bright, wayyyyy too many colors as well. I know that you get points for the blending and the juxtaposing them together but sheesh! the detail got a lot out of hand with the bright colors and tiny stripes that just aren't necessary for the design. So lay of all colors! Thee can some solid colors in certain places as well you know.
5.) The top.... It's like, I don't just wanna just say no to it, but it's....just....no. The split thing is just like a mash up of designs and doesn't look good, even if the physical structure matches. (sorry)
6.)The arm thingies Too spiky, needs to be simpler in design and structure; makes nonsense as to where the tiny spikes came from anyway. The left one is okay though.
7.) The purse Again, simplify. please.
That's all I gotta say. The dress is very creative in design, with an attention-grabbing layout you really couldn't miss on the street. But that's because it's way too bright and colorful with all these random patterns flying this way and that. And Lady Gaga, no matter how 'outrageous' her dresses may seem, ALWAYS have a meaning to them. This my friend really doesn't. 5/10
I don't really critique much but hey, judge my critique if you really want to.

First off, I'd like to thank you for giving a civil and thoughtful critique rather than just going "IT'S UGLY AND IT SUCKS." like the rest of the people who didn't like it.
If you had read my description, you would know that 1) the skirt is made of spandex so it can stretch, allowing for more movement, and 2) the inspiration for it was an insect, so it makes sense that it would look reptilian.
I appreciate that you have a more minimalistic style aesthetic, but that's not for me. I'm not suggesting that anyone walk down the street looking like this- it was meant as a couture runway piece, or, as the DD selector said, a costume. The assignment I was completing with this drawing specified to be as over-the-top as possible, so that's what I did.
