Edit-OH MY GOD DAILY DEVIATION THANK YOU
I thought it was an error when I woke up and had so many feedback messages!
This is definitely one of my favorite things I've ever designed, and I'm glad so many other people like it too!
Thank you to Lilyas for featuring, and everyone else for your support!

For the Monthly Theme.
Contest description:
Insect-O-Gram
"Message delivered by insect."
With autumn closing in and summer being at its peak we've decided to go with a more wacky theme this time around. Here's what you have to do - gather your gear (goggles, binoculars, cameras, the usual spying stuff) and start observing because you've got to come up with... insect haute couture! This challenge is all about designing an haute couture outfit inspired by the insect of your choice - mantises, beetles, pretty much whatever you can think of (except butterflies because that would be too easy and we wouldn't want that, would we?) in order to make your entry as original and as colorful as possible. Accessories required.
Include in your artist's comment:
- The name of your insect of choice and a short description
- The reason you chose it
- And a brief description of your design.
The insect I chose was the Spiny Flower Mantis, as depicted by in this lovely photo: [link]
I chose it because I was first drawn to the rainbow-colored wings, and also loved the swirls, spiked claws, and the crazy patterned body. I knew this insect would give me a lot to work with so I could be more crazy and creative with the design instead of staying more literal.
I loved the rainbow aspect, and wanted to play that up a bit more than in the actual insect, but I still wanted to stay true to it. The overskirts and shirred ruffles are inspired by the wings, the segmented and quilted parts are inspired by the body, the spikes are inspired by the claws, and the mesh is inspired by the texture of the wings.
Because the dress is so colorful and over the top, I thought it would be best to give my girl some simple black hair, but I threw on some "bug-eye" glasses to top off the look.
The diamonds on the skirt were inspired by the flaps (I don't know the technical term) hanging off the mantis's rear, and I pictured them being some sort of shiny thin plastic, creased down the middle. All the small red dots are gemstones. The skirt body and top I pictured being out of a shiny lycra spandex, so it would give off a little shimmer, quilt well, and fit really snugly. The rainbow ruffles are ombre dyed pleated organza.
I made the bag more conservative than the outfit because, in theory if this look was ever to be made (which honestly, I'm not sure is possible), I know most people wouldn't have a practical use for such a dress, so the bag could be something they would buy and actually use. I tried to pull elements from the entire design and simplify them down into something more mainstream.
Additionally, I was inspired by this dress by Thierry Mugler: [link]
And Lady Gaga's Living Dress: [link]
Like I said, I don't know if this is even possible to make, and if it is, it would be horribly expensive, but hey, the challenge said "haute couture", so I figured I'd have as much fun as I could before I go back to school and have to design things that people can actually wear
Sadly I ran out of time while working on this, so it's not as polished as I'd like it to be, but I love how the design came out, so when I have time I'll probably finish it up and make a nice background and such, and then resubmit it.
EDIT-
I won! Again!
Thank you everyone so much for your support!
Here's the lovely description they gave it
"Haute couture at its peak, a beautiful example of creativity at its utmost! Considering that the insect in question was not a particularly easy subject to interpret it is a truly impressive achievement and the designer's approach is pleasantly surprising. A very commendable effort that deserves our highest appreciation!"

Ah, forgive me for not reading your comment all the way. I see all the words and I'm like ehhhh.... Your welcome and thank you very much for not blasting at me for my critique. Also, if it was for reptiles: greens, blues and other cooler colors would have probably been for the best.
And also if it had scaly things or maybe if the back was an alligator mouth; that'd be cool. With diamonds for teeth!!!
Lady gaga would approve.

See, there's a difference between saying 'I don't really like this, I don't like the color/shape/etc.' and saying 'OMG you're such a bad artist, why do you even try, you awful person.'
There's a difference constructive criticism and being a bully, an ineffectual one at that. Thanks for your flame time anyway.

Could you stop trolling her just because you didn't like her reply? Honestly, your critique wasn't helpful at all, it was downright rude. She actually handled it a lot better than most people would, including you.

Actually, she didn't. People shouldn't think that an artist will flame you immediately if you anything bad on their work at all. Little crybabies definitely will, YES, but artists, no. Also people shouldn't just say BOO, IT SUCKS either, without civilly and more properly expressing their feelings on it. It turns everything around and makes that person look childish, instead of the artist that you are aiming for.

Its a fashion design. The focus is on the actual clothing as it should be. This is one of the better ones I have seen.
You did a good job keeping within the theme~.

Poor anatomy, lacks a background, uninventive and unskilled use of pencils...Very mediocre work, no idea WHY this is a daily deviation.
The colours are nice, I suppose.

actually your way off, maybe you should check out fashion art... elongated stance is considered the norm for fashion dolls... the colors for most line work contains square tiles with numbers according to locations... <- fact...

Why are you such an angry person? Do you have any idea of what goes on the runway nowadays? This is tame. And quite nice, might I add.

Aww shucks, I'm so glad you like the colors I used!
As I said in response to the previous troll, the proportions are not realistic because that's how I've been taught to draw fashion figures all throughout my design training. Plus, I am a designer, not a fine artist- the focus of this piece should be on the design of the outfit (which you may dislike as well), not on how skilled I am with pencils.
There is no background because the whole point of a fashion illustration is to show off the clothing, and backgrounds more often distract from the figure rather than accentuate it. Go ahead and do a Google image search for "fashion illustration"- almost none of the professional ones have backgrounds.
As for "uninventive", I'm very curious to see what you'd come up with if given the same task to complete.

The thing is this is what fashion design all about, if you don't like it or if you don't even understand it don't act immature and flame or saying such mean words to the artist. People might have different opinions about art but this isn't the way you talk if you don't agree with it.
What I want to say it, act a bit more mature and try to understand on how the art world works =]

don't
And as you don't actually decide what is chosen as a DD, you have no say in what is a DD or not. In fact, and let me say this plainly:
What you think doesn't matter.
Have a nice day

It's not about the background or the use of the pencils, it's about the design idea.

Pull the other one. Her designs are gaudy, childish and unoriginal. If she was a 9th grader she'd have an excuse but apparently she's gone through 4 years of design training only to produce this which looks like something Mattel has discontinued during the late 80s. All very well the idea has been maintained throughout the design but does this design remind me of a flower mantis? no. Does it look look natural and insect inspired? no. The dress itself is a mermaid dress with a few extra 'fins' stuck on it which reminds me of fish and marine creatures not a mantis.
Unoriginal and unskilled. Why don't you do Evilchild a favor go and find talent to feature and leave her to evaluate and develop her 'ideas' instead of leading a flock of mindless butt-kissers to pamper her ego.

I JUST LOVE TROLLS WHO WRITE IN ALL CAPS
All I'll say is this- I never claimed to be the best fine artist ever, or even the best fashion designer. However, this drawing was submitted into the "fashion design" category, not the illustration one. When it comes to design, it's the idea that counts, not how well you can render it. And hey, maybe you don't like my idea either, but I never expected to be able to please everyone.
As for the proportions being off, that's how I've been trained to draw fashion figures in my 4 years of design training. Take it up with my professors.
