Description Edit-
OH MY GOD DAILY DEVIATION THANK YOU
I thought it was an error when I woke up and had so many feedback messages!
This is definitely one of my favorite things I've ever designed, and I'm glad so many other people like it too!
Thank you to Lilyas for featuring, and everyone else for your support!

For the Monthly Theme.

Contest description:

Insect-O-Gram
"Message delivered by insect."
With autumn closing in and summer being at its peak we've decided to go with a more wacky theme this time around. Here's what you have to do - gather your gear (goggles, binoculars, cameras, the usual spying stuff) and start observing because you've got to come up with... insect haute couture! This challenge is all about designing an haute couture outfit inspired by the insect of your choice - mantises, beetles, pretty much whatever you can think of (except butterflies because that would be too easy and we wouldn't want that, would we?) in order to make your entry as original and as colorful as possible. Accessories required.

Include in your artist's comment:
- The name of your insect of choice and a short description
- The reason you chose it
- And a brief description of your design.

The insect I chose was the Spiny Flower Mantis, as depicted by in this lovely photo: [link]

I chose it because I was first drawn to the rainbow-colored wings, and also loved the swirls, spiked claws, and the crazy patterned body. I knew this insect would give me a lot to work with so I could be more crazy and creative with the design instead of staying more literal.

I loved the rainbow aspect, and wanted to play that up a bit more than in the actual insect, but I still wanted to stay true to it. The overskirts and shirred ruffles are inspired by the wings, the segmented and quilted parts are inspired by the body, the spikes are inspired by the claws, and the mesh is inspired by the texture of the wings.
Because the dress is so colorful and over the top, I thought it would be best to give my girl some simple black hair, but I threw on some "bug-eye" glasses to top off the look.
The diamonds on the skirt were inspired by the flaps (I don't know the technical term) hanging off the mantis's rear, and I pictured them being some sort of shiny thin plastic, creased down the middle. All the small red dots are gemstones. The skirt body and top I pictured being out of a shiny lycra spandex, so it would give off a little shimmer, quilt well, and fit really snugly. The rainbow ruffles are ombre dyed pleated organza.
I made the bag more conservative than the outfit because, in theory if this look was ever to be made (which honestly, I'm not sure is possible), I know most people wouldn't have a practical use for such a dress, so the bag could be something they would buy and actually use. I tried to pull elements from the entire design and simplify them down into something more mainstream.

Additionally, I was inspired by this dress by Thierry Mugler: [link]
And Lady Gaga's Living Dress: [link]

Like I said, I don't know if this is even possible to make, and if it is, it would be horribly expensive, but hey, the challenge said "haute couture", so I figured I'd have as much fun as I could before I go back to school and have to design things that people can actually wear

Sadly I ran out of time while working on this, so it's not as polished as I'd like it to be, but I love how the design came out, so when I have time I'll probably finish it up and make a nice background and such, and then resubmit it.

EDIT-
I won! Again!
Thank you everyone so much for your support!

Here's the lovely description they gave it

"Haute couture at its peak, a beautiful example of creativity at its utmost! Considering that the insect in question was not a particularly easy subject to interpret it is a truly impressive achievement and the designer's approach is pleasantly surprising. A very commendable effort that deserves our highest appreciation!"

Well I am sorry if I've insulted your fashun ideas oh mighty professional but it's not just the rendering that's crap it's the design itself. I distinctly remember my step-sister doodling her wedding dress on the back of a burger king menu aged nine and it looked like this. But hey dat's fashun!!1 YUR A FASHUN GURU AND YUR GONNA BRAKE TEH MOLD!!!1 Seriously, look at the definition of fashion, look at the history of fashion the only real influential designs were aesthetically brilliant, popular and usable. The poise lamp, the mini skirt - classic designs, simplistic designs, liberating designs unlike this which has been doodled by kiddies since time began. RAINBOWS!!!11 PATTERNS!!! Give me a break, It doesn't take a genius to think that shit up.
Now tell me, how did you spend your four years of design training? Looking at textiles, colors, history of design? Have you even seen a color wheel or learnt about color theory? Please save me the pretentious crap of IT'S OPEN MINDED AND TTLY INSPIRED BY FLOWERS AND THORNY FLOWERS AT THAT!!!11 It looks horrific and awkward. The only way you could have possibly got a DD is that your butt-buddies with the right people.

In my opinion, real art is not something that everyone agrees on, but something that elicits a strong reaction from people, both positive and negative. I think it's safe to say I've done my job.

Miniskirts have no design at all- they're just a tube of fabric (with or without darts, depending on the fabric) and are one of the first things you make when learning to sew. However, when they were "invented", they were extremely controversial and were banned from many places for being offensive and innapropriate.

If my DD bothers you that much, take it up with my "butt-buddy"(who I've never spoken to), since there's no way for me to remove the badge from my own page.

You're right that real art is something that not everyone can agree on but real art is also original and skilled. It's very easy to shit sparkles and rainbows onto something and gain a wave of teenie bopper fans from it, as I said before my nine year old step-sister doodled a dress similar to this back in 1993 when we wore shell-suits and watched cartoon network. I think it's Lilya who needs to get off her ass and find something original to feature instead of sparkles and rainbows which she's so preoccupied by.

As I told Liyla, if you were in 9th grade you'd have an excuse for your lack of originality but your not and you claim to have some sort of qualification in fashion design yet you spit the spectrum at your designs like my sister did all those years ago.
I don't really understand you, why are you rationalizing and making excuses for your work instead of taking criticism on board an sitting down to your desk to improve. True I am a troll but you're feeding me and aren't you a 'yuppie' with a life of design ahead of yourself? Why won't you listen? I don't want to skin you of your DD I want you to get of your damn high horse and take criticism so you will improve and don't come back with a "what do you know, i'm the professional your just a troll" because trolling is a part time thing and I'm not very good at it - I have got a job in design IRL believe it or not.

Honestly, I haven't seen you give any constructive criticism other than that the colored pencils should be blended better, which I already knew, and that it's too colorful.
I personally hate the fact that almost every store I walk into nowadays only carries clothing in beige, brown, grey, army green, denim blue, black, and white. I would love to see more bright colors available because that's what I enjoy, and I'm sorry that you don't. However, I'm not going to go around writing letters to every designer whose work I don't like, telling them that they should change.
If colors are out of style, I have no problem being called "outdated," "unoriginal", or even, as someone else put it, "archaic".

To quote the late, great Alexander McQueen, "The world needs fantasy, not reality. We have enough reality today."

I am capable of designing "normal" clothing, but that's not what I enjoy. I am looking to ultimately be a costume designer, and that's what this is- costume.

I am not going to change who I am and what I do just because 4 people hiding behind troll accounts say they don't like it, when clearly there are many many more people who support it. Betsey Johnson was told by all her peers and professors that her work was hideous and gaudy when she was in school, and look where she ended up! And hey, you may hate her work too, but there's no denying that she's successful.

As a designer yourself, you should be happy if what I'm doing is so "unskilled and unoriginal"- it means I won't be competing with you for your next job.

I don't think our paths will ever cross in design, I specialize in fluxus inspired typography and calligraphy your skills lie in fashion and design. I appreciate that your ostentatious approach to design is an area which you knew would cause controversy and you have deliberately interpreted into your design but the lack of originality of this particular design and failure to convey an idea is what bothers me.

Fashion is all about the ideas behind the work as you've mentioned before. For example the "Frankie says relax" shirts are all about acceptance towards homosexuality, the steel toe cap boots that builders wear is all about safety and this costume is all about a flower mantis. It doesn't remind me of a bug. It looks marine inspired simply because you've used a mermaid dress with what looks like extra fins attached.
Maybe my years of designing fonts have somehow swept me of my imagination but I really find it hard to see the bug in this costume.
