Description I am convinced this work is cursed. On every attempt I run in to the strangest problems, all the save files for the previous version have either been lost or have become corrupted. Not to mention the ridiculous number of problems and errors I encountered along the way. Everything from texture files not being recognised, fatal errors while rendering, geometry just plain disappearing and of course Maya crashing without warning.

On the up side I did learn a lot, in particular, command line rendering, polygon reduction, some finer points of lighting with final gather and the exact breaking strain of my keyboard.

This work has become a kind of gauge, having to rebuild it so many times has severed to remind me just how far I’ve come.

Made in Maya
Rendered in Mental Ray
Post in Photoshop

Update: Colour and contrast ajustment.
One of my moniters is dying, everything comes up too bright and slightly wrong colour. I didn't realise this at the time.

well I think it`s wel worth it to it, very nice and smooth render, good geometry, the standard wood texture changed a bit very super in this piece, it just fits. What can I say, the modeling is very good and the idea marvellous

What i presume to be bishops (On the bottom left of white knight on the left of the globe and to the top right of the knight on the right hand side of the globe) have a little bit of a rough edge but as I said tiny tiny thing.

hehehe all rendering to me is sore on the grey cells lol

madbrainsurgeon [2004-09-16 10:06:28 +0000 UTC]

Command line rendering sounds dangerously painful on the grey cells, a lot of effort and time went into this I bet.

Not used to looking at maya renderings so i am not sure of the weaknesses and strengths of the program.

This picture captures the mood of the world at the minute perfectly.

The only possible critique I can find is there a few rough edges on some of the pieces.

Its accutuly quite simple, just open up the DOS promt, type in the rendering command and your away. It useful because it doesn't need Maya to be ope, which does nothing during rendering yet uses up a big chunk of RAM.

rough edges? do tell

i like this... its a very intriguing point of view on chess and a globe... it reminds me of like a study room or library in someone's home where they may keep a nice chess set and globe... so now this just kills two birds with one stone in a very inventive way. Nice work.

This is a stunning piece. I love the design of the chess pieces, in particular the knight, but I find it hard to differentiate between (what I presume are) the king and the queen. Also: I notice that there aren't any chess pieces on the reverse side of the globe (you can't see any heads poking out from behind it) and it gives the impression of being vaguely overbalanced. Still: all this is nitpicking; it is an astounding picture and the textures and colours complement a really great design. Plus it works well as a wallpaper... you rule.

I love this one even more.
The color scheme, textures and shapes are so crisp and original.
The lighting and shadow work has come a long way and looks remarkable.
Fine fine work.

I like this peice, a lot. I'm not an avid fan of chess but I like to play a game or two here and there. Now this is a great peice of work here. The globe the peices the reflections on the globe and such, and the fine details is all good. Now if you ask me and I doubt this is what you were going for be to me it rather seems like this symbolize how our world is constantly at war or in a game of chess with it self, where the kings are world leaders we are trying to capture. All in all I'll make sure to put this down as a :fav+:

Initially I made it for no ther reason that I thought it would look cool. But the symbolism is kinda hard to ignore.

I'm really impressed at the level of detail in this. The pieces, the textures on them and the globe itself, plus the lighting is great. After looking at the other images it's definitely clear how much you've progressed with your skills.
Well done, and great stuff!
