Description I am convinced this work is cursed. On every attempt I run in to the strangest problems, all the save files for the previous version have either been lost or have become corrupted. Not to mention the ridiculous number of problems and errors I encountered along the way. Everything from texture files not being recognised, fatal errors while rendering, geometry just plain disappearing and of course Maya crashing without warning.

On the up side I did learn a lot, in particular, command line rendering, polygon reduction, some finer points of lighting with final gather and the exact breaking strain of my keyboard.

This work has become a kind of gauge, having to rebuild it so many times has severed to remind me just how far I’ve come.

Made in Maya
Rendered in Mental Ray
Post in Photoshop

Update: Colour and contrast ajustment.
One of my moniters is dying, everything comes up too bright and slightly wrong colour. I didn't realise this at the time.

It looks to be well worth all of the trouble you went through. This is and awesome image. That would be one confusing game of chess.

very cool.
the world is played like a game of chess... few people in control moving pawns for their own benefit.

Great work, I like the idea and it's well executed. I know how tricky it can be to work with Maya to get the image you want and you did a good job. I like your chess piece designs, particularly your knight.

You know I've really found out why, it just happens. The only way to combat it it is back it up in multiple locations.

fantastic piece.. you have some nice GI in there man... BTW Im really enjoying your gallery. Is the detail in in the pieces modeled or displaced? it has a kinda of "Mray displace" look to it. on a side note do you know anything about dissplacement approximation? working on learning it but there are no docs that suport it.. keep up the good work

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

evilhomer145 In reply to Staticcurve [2004-12-30 23:42:23 +0000 UTC]

Everything in there is modeled except for the surface of the globe which is bump mapped. I have tryed my hand at displacement a few times but it doesn't agree with me.
