This drawing is modeled off of THIS photo that I really loved of my friend Mandee.[link]
In the past I used only a mechanical pencil to do my drawings, but because of the broad range of darks and brights I brushed the dust off of my graphite pencil set and probably used all in the range from 4H to 8B.
If you saw the original photo you'll see that it is a photoshopped photo and consists of a lit of grit. I had fun trying to duplicate the grit in the photo into my drawing and making the crisp focused parts as accurate as the distant and blurred parts.

i understand that no matter how good a drawing might be, if it isn't scanned/photographed properly.. it drives you nuts! but man, this is kickass the way it is! i can already tell how amazingly realistic it is. VERY fucking good. goddamn woman.

I agree with fggts, this is an awesome piece. You picked up the shadows perfect, and because it took so many pencils to do it, just shows that you are a master of lead and shading.

Thank you very much for those words of encouragement. I had only used the set once before a year or so ago and only found myself using three maaaaaybe four of the pencils out of the set of 10. But this time while tackling this challenge i really really learned the value of using each one. I will do so from this point on.
Using only a mechanical pencil only gets you as far as bragging rights when attempting to draw a portrait/photograph.

yeah i can't draw for crap, so if I use a mechanical pencil or 50 pencils to draw something it will still look like a circle with eyeballs... if i'm lucky that is.
You did a great job, and I hope to see much more in the future with this type of quality. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.
