Description The potency of the youngest gorgon's gaze pierced the Goddess to the core. Unable to draw Her eyes away from the full effects of the girl, Athena felt Her skin harden. Her immortal heart pounded against Her chest in futility as She was held by one of Medusa's daughters. "NOOOooo....", the once proud Goddess of Wisdom and Warfare's voice trailed off as Her mouth froze in a scream - like many of Medusa's many previous victims had done.  Her lips no longer moving, yet Her mind was still alive.. feeling the effects of the young gorgon's gaze spread down Her neck.
.. is this the end?

- Lightning Sky 2
Notes:
As far as timeline goes, like most Gods, Their seeds are potent and often result in children (Just see Zeus and His 'heroes'/kings legacies). In the case of Medusa (and Poseidon), of course we knew what got Medusa into trouble in the first place. Since it took a while between her curse (from Athena) and the time that She sent a hero to clean up Her mess (Perseus), Medusa had already spawned a few children off Poseidon. At the time of this picture, Medusa has already been mounted on Athena's Aegis.. but a slight miscalculation that she had children that carried her curse.. - of course, with the prequel (unrendered at this time) would show that they had a 'bit of help' setting up this rather.. stone-walled reunion party
This is one of my old pieces finally rendered to completion. And to you petrification/stoning fans..  you know who you are

Worst torture is to have no control over what's happening, but alive inside the stone. Also, I'm sure She'll be too embarassed to call out in Her 'hard situation'

yes - it's the end.
her clothing will brittle off and she will be left a statue of how the goddess was meant to be displayed: totally nude and without a bit of her modesty left of her.  there are a few male mortals who will be celebrating this, and her destruction.

I guess She did create a monster that even She didn't anticipate would come back to haunt Her for the rest of Her existance

Well isn't THIS a fine how-do-you-do?! No sooner do I have this poor Goddess eating solid food and not screaming in panic at every random sound, than another old enemy shows up to turn Her into a garden gnome! This damsel in distress rescuing gig is hard work!
LOVE the cute new outfit for Her, by the way.....much more becoming than the regal robes. I assume She made it Herself while She convalesced after Her ordeal with Sylvene.....  She IS the Goddess of Crafts and Artistic Endeavours, after all.......

Even Goddesses have a run of bad days.. and some appointments weren't booked - gotta love people who just force one!
As for the outfit, actually it ties in a bit with my world/lore that God-metal looks like leather, flexes like leather but a lot stronger. Obviously for the shield a stronger version makes it more actual metal-like.
It's also something a bit more suited for combat (robes get caught and shredded)..
I must admit, it was inspired by: Incredible Herc some time ago:
eu.faerie.cx/gallery/picture.p…
PS. At least She didn't get hurt 'below' like Sylvene did to Her.. or perhaps that's why She wasn't at Her best

Well dang.....She told me She designed that cute little outfit because She hoped I'd like it....gah....never trust a Goddess...haha!
So now I understand Wonder Woman's outfit more......it looks like it was designed more for aesthetics than function, but the mystical properties make it more functional than we mortals might have guessed......
Yeah, Athena's definitely not back in "fighting trim" so to speak. She still walks rather timidly and She cowers every time She hears a female voice on the radio. Definitely easy pickings for the Gorgon twins.

Somehow I think She is afraid of a particular melodic female voice in anticipation.

I'd guess so! I can't imagine Her wanting to go another round with everyone's favourite nymph.
Good think I buy skin moisturiser by the gallon, because that petrification looks like it's going to take some work

For you, a special quest just to find where the Gorgons are going to take Her to first .. can't make it THAT easy
As for our favourite nymph.. somewhere deep inside I think Athena respected someone which was a worthy foe.. even if She had to keep quiet that She had actually lost a couple of rounds

Lamplighter1968 In reply to EvilUnicorn [2017-09-12 22:51:03 +0000 UTC]

Oh dear.....I assumed the little brats would just leave Her on the lawn to be oggled and mocked by Her enemies. On the other hand, imagining Her being carried off, helpless and unable to protect Herself, attempt to escape, or even cry out for help, Her still living mind desperately hoping Her white knight will find Her again and rescue Her makes a delightful fantasy reminiscent of Demetri Maximoff's ending in Darkstalkers 3 .
As for respecting a worthy foe, it's more than likely. Athena is, after all, the Goddess of War, so She certainly respects strength, although striking Her down by treachery may not be as honourable as Athena might admire. Furthermore, when it comes to strength, a good friend of mine once said, "Cruelty knows no boundaries, but compassion is the exclusive playground of the mighty." Sylvene certainty demonstrated the power and cunning to best Athena, but her viciousness and lack of mercy drops her short of getting to walk in the steps of the truly mighty.
Hey, on a different but related note, I read somewhere that you accept commissions. I was wondering if you would consider fleshing out some of these scenes of yours if an enthusiastic fan were interested in ponying up......?

Actually Athena is more than just the (physical) War Goddess.. She is the strategic side too, and face it - when up against Ares, She kinda finds Him a bit too.. obvious. To find someone that could challenge Her in this 'War-chess' is rare enough find. Also, War isn't always about frontal assaults (as per Ares). Sometimes it's about maneuvering, outflanking, propaganda and sneakyness. As for Sylvene, I can see how Athena could see Her as 'dishonorable' but then She also knows nothing is as it seems. Something must be motivating the nymph.. and being the Wise one, will surely find out that Sylvene's just doing her way of enfocing the will of Gaia.. and has her limits (though not often shown on paper/pictures). Maybe I might do a spotlight on Sylvene's bio one day. She's very complex, and probably won't fit into one journal entry. Suffice to say, her 'utopia' is not elimination of human/Gods, but to have them 'put back into their place' (in case of humans, have scattered pockets of human civilization). I hear it's something like "Attack on Titan" anime (I've never seen it) or Aeon Flux (the movie) where humans had been forced to retreat into their little self-imposed cage

Lamplighter1968 In reply to EvilUnicorn [2017-09-12 23:20:32 +0000 UTC]

*grin* Interesting that, in reality, I fully support Sylvene's mandate. We speak of invasive species as being a threat to ecosystems, but we humans are the single most invasive (and destructive) species in modern global history. We definitely need our numbers culled and our impact on the biosphere curtailed, and if we continue to refuse to do either ourselves, then we need to have it done for us.
I wonder though, if Athena would admit to having admiration for Sylvene.......after all, the line between respect and simple fear is a thin one

EvilUnicorn In reply to Lamplighter1968 [2017-09-12 23:48:36 +0000 UTC]

In my take, Athena would respect/fear Sylvene for 2 reasons:
1) She finally had someone that would challenge Her. Not just in a physical sense, but mental. It's no fun when you keep playing the War-chess and winning all the time. The taste of defeat could be.. exhilirating
2) She is a book learner. She knows about sex, fear, defeat, death, etc only through words. Experiencing it, is a different matter. Having been attacked (in unexpected places ), drained and put in a position that She nearly died (She never even considered the possibility) - I can see Her thankful for the nymph giving Her the experience. In fact, perhaps Her lust for experiences (beyond the book learning) might make Her wonder what else the nymph could 'show Her'.. closet Stockholm Syndrome?
In the cannon storyline, they both respect each other - and try to stay out of each other's way - knowing that (like chess), sometimes making the first move, is the bad move.. especially on Athena's side, if She's distracted by Ares/human warfare/etc. Athena maintains an uneasy peace after Her defeats to know what NOT to do. Besides, how many transformations has She done since Arachne/Medusa? No need to take second lessons, as a Goddess

Very  good points. Hard to imagine Athena having much appreciation (even in retrospect) for the kind of vicious cruelty She suffered at Sylvene's hands though. Being outmaneuvered and beaten down is one thing, but......*shivers*
Of course, the greater the ferocity of the antagonist, the greater the need (and contrast) with gentle kindness from the rescuer *grins slyly*

Once again, your grasp of mythology really shines through here.  Poor Athena was always too vengeful for one so wise.  The technical aspects of this art are terrific, my only complaint is that the darkness of the piece makes it hard to see what's happening to the Goddess.  You've done a good job matching the scene to the background, and I agree the background really sets the mood.

I suspect this is because of the new stone texture. It's a lot darker than the usual but it's more technically correct (more rock, less soul ). I tried to put the gaze-lighting nearer to light it up a bit more.

I'm sure She will be mulling over it within the statue.. for a while. She's not going anywhere - a mortal would be killed, but a Goddess?.. Tormented by being alive within an unmoving shell. Perhaps a fate worthy of something Hades would come up with in Tartarus

Excellent scene.  I always felt sorry for the mythical Medusa as she really had not done anything wrong.  In fact she was being punished for being a victim.

It is the way of the Classical Mythica Era. Where sometimes I wish we still are in. Instead of blaming morality and justice and other stuff, sometimes bad things "just happen" (wrong place, wrong time - like Acktaeon, or Paris, or in this case Medusa).

Truth be said, I suspect the untold version probably had Medusa boast of her beauty too (hubris is a big no-no in those days).. and wouldn't suprise me that Aphrodite dobbed her into Poseidon

Big thanks to your background to give that epic look. It's the thunder/lightning that conjures that epicness. This is what I'd like to pride on with my pieces - no matter what the foreground is (and whether people like the fetish/action/etc), the background/lighting is what makes the mood/story/picture!

I agree with you about the importance of a background to the finished work. A different background completely alters the feel and mood of a piece. When the right one comes along, it's almost like a bell goes "ding" in my head and I know that's the one to use. You have made a great job here for sure  Glad to be a part of it

EvilUnicorn In reply to juansixx1961 [2017-09-10 22:33:22 +0000 UTC]

Actually I work the opposite. I work the foreground, the lighting then search for a background - which is often hard to find "on a whim". Good thing I can always fall back on some standard generic styles (ie. sillhouettes, moons, thunders, etc) which is generically good for most scenes Especially with my generic style of having dark-ish images (night is always much more sensual/mysterious for good/bad things to happen).

That's a cool way to work I have over the last week uploaded many backgrounds with a dark, moon and scary feel. I am sure you have seen them in my gallery.... I hope they come in at some point. Also a blood red moon like you mentioned previously.

Yep, I know where I can find them when I need one now - and with full permissive use too (which is usually the other hard part - when looking for something "on the fly"). I thank you and saw a lot that would be useful.. including one that will feature in a small window in a She-Ra picture (once I get the front worked out). Thank you again for the generosity of terms.

I must admit, there's a lot of good stock in your collection. Good angles for renders.
I found as a note that 'looking down' photos are hard to use, so are those with a lot of complex lights (because I have to match it in the foreground for it to blend seamlessly). ie. needs very specific picture to blend it in

juansixx1961 In reply to EvilUnicorn [2017-09-10 23:03:42 +0000 UTC]

I like to do photo-manipulations for fun... it's great seeing a picture come to life and often take shots of specific angles just to use in a picture. I like upwards looking perspective to create a sense of massiveness and a powerful and majestic feel to things. I will bear in mind your comments concerning too much lighting tho' and keep anything I come up with fairly neutral in that respect. Looking forward to seeing your next piece

Having done photomanip, you know exactly what I mean. Finding people with the right shading to match photos can be a pain .. and looking up is always awesome. Makes great skylines/epicness (as you say, the "sense of massive/powerful"). I like the sky shots for the omenous looks (your pics with the ravens/bats/etc helped that so much!). Again, Lightning is always awesome for dramatic scenes (Most of mine are action)
