Description
This is a snapshot in the the life of a man who I only call "the young rebel": just taking a quiet moment between bouts of being shot at.He was inspired as almost a tribute to the rebel fighters of the Libyan Uprising. I heard about the rebels efforts and battles against Gaddafi at the very beginning, and I got this young man's image in my head, though in a very different context...
He's set within the bounds a large space opera I'm still formulating. Decades before this guy -- [link] -- and his ilk came on the scene as stormtroopers of a newly-risen regime out for revenge, the system of Rho Cancri was a very succesful, but heavily exploited colony. Push people hard enough and eventually they'll push back. And the 'native' Rho Cancrians pushed back against their corporate oppressors. Hard.
This young man joined up in the first week of the insurrection, at the age of 17, where he was handed an old rifle, ammunition, and some old, scrounged armour. Now it's been over two years, countless friends, and the-Ancestors-know-how-many rounds later, and this hardened soldier, weary and stoic, is just trying not to die or go insane. Whilst there is a lull in battle, he puffs on a vaporiser, filled with an easily sublimated chemical powder, mixed and prepared to keep him cool, collected and focused. It makes things easier.
My only dissapointment: his hand may be too small.
I will hopefully use this man again.
