Kitsune are a fascinating species of demon, found solely in the eastern parts of the world, these Demons can change their shapes to a seemingly any shape they desire, but they appear to have a preference to a Vulpine like body shape, it is currently unknown if this is there true form or if it is just their preferred form.
The only hard parts of their body being the pale mask like face they all seem to posses, this "mask" is about as hard as stone, and weighing up to 14kg, the rest of the body consists of a near smoke like substance, how the demon is able to hold such a solid shape is beyond current human understanding, and when one perishes the body will disperse leaving only the mask like face behind.

The tails of these demons appear to be the most gaseous part of their body, starting off as a thick plume of smoke that seemingly never ceases, the smoke trails can reach twice as long as the Demons body. contact with these tails leads to a very intense feeling, similar to pins and needles or when someone hits their funny bone.
Due to how the smoke separates into several strands, it can give the Demon the appearance of having multiple tails, each strand ending in a faint ominous glow, this lead to the Demon gaining the name "Kitsune Novemcaudis" meaning 9 Tailed Fox.

Due to their gas like form they are able to morph their bodies into any shape they desire, be it something as unassuming as a stone or something more complex like an animal, another demon or even a human being.
They are even able to change the colouration of their body, allowing them to mimic the appearance of others even further, right down to finer details like the clothing, scars and even finger prints.

The only telltales of a Kitsune transformation are subtle details that can only appear under certain circumstances:
. When exposed to intense light the shadow of the shape shifter will appear wavy in appearance, almost as if it was made of smoke.
. When in darkness the shape shifters eyes will give off a golden glow.
. Due to lacking vocal cords, they can't make sounds, meaning mimicking voices is a struggle for them, imposters will tend to avoid conversations.
. They can't mimic memories, meaning there could be gaps in the imposters memories with friends and loved ones, but due to the Demon being rather intelligent some have been known to spy on a human for weeks in advance to learn to mimic them more effectively.

Kitsune are long living creatures, with records of some individuals dating back to hundreds of years ago, with the older the individual having larger plumes of smoke for tails than younger ones.
The possible reason for their longevity is possibly due to their gaseous body structure, but it is currently unknown, another interesting trait to come with age is that it appears older individuals are far more skilled with their transformative abilities, even going as far as to change the environment around them, going as far to create false villages complete with even fake people to populate it.
These false civilians are all apart of the Kitsune's trick, with each and every being created from the trap being the Kitsune itself, these "Fox Traps" are used to either trap their prey preventing them from leaving or to defend their nests from intruders by causing them to get lost in this Illusory zone.

I've had this on the back burner for a few months actually, never knew how helpful the STASH was for saving my descriptions, this is a game changer for me
This was a very fun Demon to design but a very tricky one to write for, i wanted to explain the shape shifting in an interesting way i haven't seen people do before, most Fox transformations i see seem to either be magic and glitter or CGI special effects, never seen people actually EXPLAIN it before, so i threw my hat in the ring, tried to think of something interesting and hopefully made it work
The trickiest part was to work with was the myth itself, since foxes are such a dense part of Japanese myth there was a tad too much to dive into, so i worry i might not have done a good job in depicting it, yet again this isn't an unfamiliar concept with me, my ghoul for example is just a bunch of Tokyo Ghoul references really, and my Wyvern isn't venomous like it is in myth, so i guess i should be in the green still, fingers crossed i am
I had an absolute blast with this, the smoke tails were my favorite part to do, i added spirals to pay homage to the traditional japanese art style, issue is that i am not too good at that so it might just look like spinney smoke
Either way i hope you all enjoy this still, and hopefully i managed to make the Kitsune interesting enough to make people interesting in the myth

P.S i assure you i made this design WAY before seeing Hisuian Zoroark, although i can easily say the resemblance is frightening
(Zoroark WAS an inspiration though, just not the Ghost type one though)
