Description Everyone expects the beginning of these things to be so dramatic. Aliens descending from the heavens in a show of lights and colors. Great monsters bursting from the sea with a booming roar and grand entrance. Who could ever expect this huge event to go down in silence and simplicity? No one did, but it happened. The world woke up one day to find that...thing...just hovering there. It had descended from the clouds without a sound, and it hung above the city like a monolith. Panic immediately took hold, and everyone scrambled to figure out what to do. Contact was attempted, but it responded to nothing. It didn't help that no one knew which end was its face, or if it even had one. Some called for an attack, but no one wanted to take the first shot. No one wants to take credit for gunning down our first alien visitor, especially if they weren't doing anything. For days, people puzzled on what to do, but that soon changed. At some random time on some random day, the thing moved. It didn't swim or slither, rather it just slid across the sky like how you would drag an image across a screen. Eventually it came to a halt, and then it made landfall. The thing dropped downward and smashed its thorny end through the city block it hung above. A horrid grinding sound ripped through the air, as the thing slowly dug its way through steel and concrete. The weird blade things just tore through anything they touched, and its porous body secreted some fluid that turned the earth into soup. At a turtle's pace, it bore its way into the ground, uncaring of the people and property it just pulverized.

Immediately an attack was called, but the military's efforts were useless. Bombs and bullets didn't phase it, as it just continued to dig downward. Ideas were thrown around and crazy plans were hatched, but none even fazed the thing. It just dug away, creating a vertical shaft that went for miles down. Eventually it stopped, and it rose back up to the sky. Then it moved itself again, and went back to digging. It was a surprisingly simple thing, but that just meant it was the laziest apocalypse ever. We couldn't do anything to stop it, as it just slid from place to place and put holes in our planet. Due to its pattern of digging, one scientist suggested that this was some kind of scavenger from space, one that fed on dying worlds. Perhaps our pollution had somehow tricked it into thinking our planet was diseased and thus an easy meal? It was an interesting one, but a depressing one as well. Nothing like having your civilization take out by a comic maggot.

Recently, though, a new theory appeared. Researchers have noticed the entity slowly excreting large spheres of matter, forming them within its cage-like limbs. Its tendrils and orifice slowly add and compact these spherical mass, until they reach a certain size. Once these material orbs are finished, it violently ejects them and launches them into the heavens. Studies and measurements have found that this burst of force is enough to get these orbs into orbit, where they just hang there in space. At first people believed this was just a way of disposing of waste, but now others are thinking something else. What if the spheres are not waste, but something valuable? Precious resources compacted into a dense ball then relocated for easier access?

What if this isn't a monster, but a machine?

Could be! Wound up at the wrong planet and is just following its orders.

no cliche apocalypses needed, this creature seems to be sent by an truly ancient alien species to analyze the composition of a planet, maybe for them to create a backup of Earth in case it gets actually destroyed.

Either that or some race is looking to strip mine the planet.

...It's pretty heavily implied to be a mining creature, dude.
