Description
When it comes to the subject of megafuana, many people are quick to view them as rampaging, destructive giants. Many large carnivores get this image, and even some non carnivorous species (like trolls) get the reputation of knocking down villages and chasing peasants through the streets. It is a crazy assumption that is probably fueled by the same people who call everything a "dragon," and it often ignores many behaviors and traits of these so called monsters. One good example of that is the Cyclops. Bring up the name "cyclops" to people and they instantly think about it smashing through their walls and stealing their women (what is up with that?). I am sure people would swear upon their holy tomes that Cyclops are bloodthirsty hunters that lay waste to entire civilizations, despite the fact that these creatures are ambush predators. Kind of hard to imagine one of these things stomping its way through town when they spend a good chunk of their lives not moving.Though their massive size and monstrous appearance (speaking for others, not me) would make people assume a vicious killing beast, Cyclops prefer a more leisurely form of hunting. This is allowed by their specific adaptations and the environments they live in. Cyclops can be found in a variety of environments that are within subtropical and tropical climates. Be it forest, swamp, marsh or rainforest, a Cyclops can reside there as long as the area doesn't experience harsh winters. Its reptilian nature makes it reliant on heat and humidity, though they can survive through very mild cold seasons. In such scenarios, their large size and stores of fat can allow them to weather through these cold times.
Though Cyclops are famous for their single eye, the other thing that makes them so memorable and intimidating is their sheer size. In their usual sitting posture, an adult Cyclops measures around twelve to thirteen feet tall at the hump. Remember, this is when they are sitting! When they are standing and walking (which is quite uncommon to see), that adds about another four feet! Their weight is not measured in pounds, but in tons! When these things stomp around, you can feel it! It's crazy! With such a size and mass, it may be easy to expect them to smash their way through the forest devouring all they see, but that is not the case. One thing that everyone knows about Cyclops, but they never truly think about, is that they have one eye.
It may seem stupidly obvious for me to say something like this, but Cyclops only have one eye. A rather big one. What you only see of this organ in life is a small fraction of it, as the rest is covered by thick scaly hide. Since they only possess one eye, this organ is extremely complex and powerful to make up for that fact. We still do not understand the scope of its seeing abilities, as it is such a massive and intricate organ that it would takes years of study to even crack the surface! The reason you only see a small portion of it goes back to the obvious fact that Cyclops only have one eye. While many species are blessed with extras, the Cyclops cannot afford to lose its one and only eye. That is why most of it is covered in thick hide, so that it is not damaged by attackers or debris when they are stomping through the forest. This may also explain why Cyclops are ambush predators instead of pursuing predators, as it is much harder to track and chase prey when you have one, delicate eye. So they instead chose to go a slower route when it comes to hunting, and they are quite good at it!
Like I said before, Cyclops spend a lot of their lives not moving, as that is how they hunt prey. They search their habitat for idle ambush spots, usually around drinking holes or well-used paths, and plant themselves amongst the vegetation and trees. This is usually done at night, when such areas are not in use. Though possessing only one eye, they have incredible night vision. The skin that covers their eye will shrink back to expose more of the organ so that it can better see in the dark. They will target areas with dense brush and cover, so that it better hides their bulk. They will also use their long arms to gather branches, leaves, dirt and other debris to pile onto their form to breakup their silhouette. To top it off, their hide is capable of making alterations to its green coloration, that way they better blend with the foliage. When all is perfect, the Cyclops will begin its vigil as it waits for prey to come. In this state, Cyclops don't move a single inch. It is incredible to watch them when they hunt, as they sit still as statues. You can't even hear them breath! There is a tale I remember someone telling me that was about a town that was being haunted by a Cyclops. The village lived deep in the forest, and only had one road in and out. One day, a logger was going to take a shipment of wood out when he just happened to spot the eye of a Cyclops peering from the foliage. Terrified, he turned his horse team around and fled back to the village. He told everyone about it, and the town panicked when they realized that their one road was now taken over by this colossal creature. As they talked amongst themselves, they realized that this monster had to be responsible for disappearances in their area. Any lone walker of the street was probably snagged and gobbled up. They waited and watch edthe creature for a few days, hoping that the lack of traffic would force the creature to look elsewhere for food. It didn't leave. They then spent the next few days trying to figure out how to slay it. Dozens of ideas and suggestions were tossed around, but no one had the courage to face such a horrible beast. Days turned to weeks, and the town soon was faced with dwindling food supplies and resources. The creature was going to starve them out of their homes! Just as they were losing hope, a hunter emerged from the surrounding woods, looking to buy some supplies. The townsfolk begged her for help, thinking that she may have the know-how on how to defeat such a beast. She agreed to help, and she went down the road to confront the creature. Everyone in town prayed and waited nervously, wishing that the hunter would be victorious. A few minutes later, the hunter came strolling back into town. Immediately, everyone rushed to her to ask what happened. They demanded to know if she killed the creature, and she looked to them quite puzzled. "How was I supposed to kill it? That thing has been dead for weeks!" I don't know if such a tale is true or not, but I got quite the chuckle from it!
Anyways, the Cyclops will remain motionless in its hiding spot, waiting for prey to walk by. Their powerful eye will be ever vigilant, searching for the slightest movement. When a living creature walks into range, the Cyclops will strike. I say "living creature" because the Cyclops will literally attack anything that gets in front of it, no matter the size or species. With a huge mouth and stomach, they can consume practically any creature that happens to catch its eye. Dissected Cyclops specimens have been found with the remains of horses, deer and even bears in its stomach! When it comes time to strike, the Cyclops can go two different routes. If the prey is human-sized or smaller, it will lash out with its elongated arms. Though they are thin, they have wicked claws and an iron grip. This move is meant to snare prey in their grip and then yank them forward into the gaping maw. When it strikes a target perfectly with its arms, the prey seems to practically vanish. One second they are there, then the next they are gone. If prey is larger than a human, it will still lash out with its arms, but it will also lurch forward with its open mouth. At that size, the claws cannot properly pull in the prey, but it can slow them so its maw can grab them. The large tusks that it possesses also helps in these scenarios, herding prey towards the mouth and impaling those who try to flee. It will bite down on the prey and then pull them back into its hiding spot. Victims may thrash and fight, but its thick hide repels such meager attacks. Using its powerful jaws, it will crush the bones of prey and then swallow the remains. Its large stomach can hold a large quantity of food, allowing the Cyclops to eat everything it can without the worry of running out of room. Such stores are crucial when the food supply dwindles, as the stagnant creature can just live off its previous meals. Even then, its slow lifestyle allows it to last for months without a fresh meal.
With such a size and reputation, Cyclops are widely known and feared. Travelers who walk the overgrown roads or wander through the thick forest are always watchful for these waiting giants. Their patient hunting behavior and their ability to remain perfectly still for days has given them the image of guardians for certain cultures. Statues of these creatures have been made to protect temples, holy hunting grounds and places of worship, their watchful eyes quite fitting for such a task. These statues also work a lot better than one would expect, as when it gets covered in moss and vines, it gives the appearance of a real hunting Cyclops! It is a joke amongst researchers that you have to be careful when it comes to studying Cyclops, as you may spend a week staring at a lifeless hunk of rock instead! For others, hunting Cyclops may be profitable by selling certain parts. Their tusks are used for carvings and ornaments, while their eye jelly has been seen as a delicacy when spread on fancy breads. Their thick hides serve well for defensive clothing, and I have spotted makeshift shields sporting their scaly skin. Hunting them, though, is a daunting task. Though they do not show much ferocity when eating prey, they can be vicious when attacked. Their massive bulk can easily squash foes and their huge maw can swallow many attackers whole. What's even scarier is that their hide flushes into a dark emerald green when angered, practically turning their skin black. Add that to their deep booming roars, and you got quite the fearsome foe! Those who go missing or wander off are often believed to be victims of such creatures. In certain cultures, it is frowned upon for virgins to wander into the forests and jungles alone, as it is said to attract the attention of these titanic beasts. Of course that is a belief, of course it is. Why are people always coming up with stuff like this? It is so bizarre. If I ever am forced out of the field of natural history, I know a pretty good thesis I could work on. It may take years of study and deciphering, but maybe I could finally understand this bizarre paranoia.

The cyclops was always a creature that I puzzled over when it came to coming up with a design. The ones based on elephants have kind of been done over and over, so I wanted to find something different. So instead, I looked for an animal that had weird eyes and went with that. Now we got chameleon cyclops, that kind of turned out looking a bit like Kraid.

this is definitely one of my favourite creatures from the world of the Knights. The weird lump on the back, the details of the little warts, the tusks and arms, the giant chameleon-ensue eye that still holds secrets that probably not even our science can't solve yet and the general information on them is just awesome. I've never seen a cyclops design like this before, and i really love it! i don't remember having ever seen a cyclops based on an elephant, though. Where have you seen such creatures before, if i may ask?
I do wonder if it's possible that in this world, the eggs of these things are stolen to be raised as actual guardians to temples and such and are instructed not to kill a member of the group that had raised it. But seeing as these things are probably likely to eat their own kind too, that's probably a stretch.
also, i have a comment on that thesis about monsters kidnapping virgins.
Gender hormones.
They'll be the death of us all. Just like memes.
Oh wait...
I'm kind of serious with it though, since Dryads don't have genders like humans and humanoids, i reckon that concepts related to it go completely over their head as is the case with Chlora here, and just like with Cpt. Dreadlock and all of his incarnations- though he has even less knowledge about the worlds he finds himself, unlike the Dryads who live and grow up in the world of the Knights and have had an entire youth to become known with the world they're in.
Speaking of this subject, I once went a bit in-depth with the idea of a humanized Thelma of which i drew that drawing (because rowing a drawing's a bit harder to do) a while ago by thinking that maybe some magical amulet i had lying somewhere and gave to her could metamorphosise her floral-based body into a humanoid one, but that would bring the issue of the gender since most Dryads are more feminine.
Then i just decided that the transformation would only go as far as her keeping her voice as it is and having breast-like parts on her body, but without the you-know-whats.
i sometimes really overthink things, and i thought you'd probably not be comfortable with the idea of somebody else tinkering with one of your creations regarding such a rather personal subject either, so not long after i had the idea i dropped it and didn't think about it anymore 'till now. There are too many weird fanfics already.

Thanks! Glad you like their design! It was a lot of fun coming up with a unique look for a cyclops, especially since the only real requirement for such a creature is having one eye. Their background was also fun to come up with, as it had me think about how a creature with one eye would hunt.
The cyclops with elephant features is something I have seen more in other artists' interpretations, as it goes with the belief that elephant skulls were what made people think cyclops existed. Not saying its a bad thing, as I was thinking about going that route as well, but I wanted something that was a bit more distinct. A good example of this is the cyclops from Dragon's Dogma. Its design draws heavily from this connection.
I don't think that is too much of a stretch. Training one of these creatures to be a guardian could work. I imagine the best way to do so is have a very specific garb or uniform that the raisers wear. They would then do a punishment/reward system where the creature is slowly taught to associate their garb with "do not eat" and everything else as "do eat." Once fully trained, it could be put in its guarding place where it can devour intruders. Those who wear this garb, though, would not be eaten and would be allowed to pass through. Cyclops would eat their own kind, but they don't do that sort of thing purposefully. If a small one happens to wander into striking range, then oh well. Thankfully for their kind, Cyclops do not travel all that much, so there is a low chance that they would walk through one's hunting territory. Also, once they gain their full size, no other Cyclops will risk trying to swallow a meal that large.
I can kind of see what you are getting at. Since dryads are both male and female, they would not have the system that drives males to be competitive and protective over females like some other species. This would lead to some confusion over males being super protective of their females, as they are hermaphrodites which allows them to breed with pretty much any of their kind so they aren't super competitive over that sort of thing.
And that is not a problem! That doesn't bother me, so no worries!

You're very welcome! it's an original idea for a Cyclops for sure, and its biological information make it sound like a real creature.
I didn't know that. Pretty interesting piece of trivia. I've looked up the Dragon's Dogma cyclops and it too looks pretty awesome, too.
I doodled a Cyclops myself too a while ago in one of my notebooks for school, an Asian-ish cyclops with a pink eye, black tattoos on his body and a black beard, who bears the name Vunashtara the Star Cyclops, referring to the seven straight horns on his head that make his head kind of look like a star and like he's wearing a crown. Each two days, his skin color would change, in the order of ???-blue-yellow, allowing him to use magical powers corresponding to that color (sand for yellow, water for blue, and i don't know what the final one would be). But besides this info, i haven't done a single thing with him yet.
Really? I didn't expect such a beast to be able to be conditioned like that, but it's awesome. The part about the uniform is a pretty interesting idea and it makes sense, too. Makes me wonder what groups would need these creatures...
Yes, that's indeed what i mean. Since the ways of reproduction of Dryads differ so much from beings made of flesh or meat, both species wouldn't know and understand a lot about the others in regards to that subject and probably be confused about some things the other species do. It could lead to some misunderstandings.
I'm glad to hear that, man. I try to be as considerate of other people's creations as possible.

That's what I strive for!
That sounds like a fun idea for a cyclops! The horn crown sounds pretty cool!
I imagine the conditioning to be a very primitive form of associative learning. Punish them every time they try to eat a dummy wearing the uniform and eventually they will associate the garb with "bad to eat." Essentially make them think that "food" that looks like that is harmful or poisonous to consume so that they don't even try to eat it. Who would need these beasts? Who knows! But they have been used as guardians, and they work quite well at swallowing intruders or robbers.
There would most definitely be some misunderstandings!

And you reach that goal time and time again!
Thanks! now that i'm acknowledging his existence again, that reminds me of another idea for monsters i once had. It was a caste-like system in a demonic society, in which one's place and extent of their power was determined by the amount of horns a demon had. I wanted to give the idea a little bit of a twist, in that the demons with the most horns were the lowest in the society, and the ones with the least horns were the most powerful ones. I thought that seeing a classic horned demon could be menacing enough, but a demon with only one horn or no horns at all would be even more intimidating in an ironic way, since it doesn't look as menacing without the horns. Like Vunashtara, i never did anything with it ever again.
But i could bring that system back when i get to creating a world/land around Vunashtara, only without the twist. It would probably work well with another incarnation of Cpt. Dreadlock, this one either being one of two incarnations; a Warlock called Sirdris, or a Fakir with a hypnotic jewel on his turban that currently has no name as of yet.
I did once try to mix Vunashtara with the story of another quite old OC of mine, a young girl who needs to wear an eyepatch because she had a rare ailment that made her eye oversensitive, and a magical flying skull with five horns called Duiskel, whose eye sockets were permanent spiral who she could summon from a magical trading card she kept in her beanie. The idea for the story was that she would travel through a fantasy world looking for some person or MacGuffin that could heal her eye, and in that journey she would meet other flying skulls, one being from another cyclops, and of course Vunashtara himself. She would eventually befriend him and through the course of the story, he would start working out and would get less and less fat (and even get a sixpack), patching up his appearance from a gluttonous dumb lazy giant that was easy to fool to an actual force to be reckoned with-- that still wasn't the brightest, but had a lot more respect.
Simple, but probably effective. I'm not going to check it out for myself if i ever encounter such a guardian, though. But Thelma could probably get near one and find out why if we ever felt the need to get ourselves into trouble.

EvolutionsVoid In reply to KingOfWarlocks [2018-03-13 20:49:53 +0000 UTC]
The demon horn system is a neat twist to things! I think the twist would still work with Vunashtara, since it sounds like his end goal is to earn more respect. It would have him in a slump since he believes the amount of horns he has determines that he is lower than the others. In time, or through another character, he could learn that he shouldn't let such a label decide how he acts or sees himself. The flying skull creatures also sound pretty fun!
I would be careful with sending Thelma near one of those things. Cyclops hunt by sight and aren't picky. Any movement in front of them that isn't wearing the garb will drive them to strike, even if said creature is a plant person. It won't know it isn't meat until it has it in its mouth, and you don't want to find yourself there at all.

Thank you! That was indeed the goal i initially had in mind for him: to gain more respect, or rather, become infamous. Another part that plays a role in his quest for respect was the fact that he ate everybody that saw him, in order to be more feared by the humans and thus more respected by the demons. Trouble is: he was too good at it. He literally ate everybody that saw him. The disappearances of course didn't go unnoticed, but the people didn't even know about his existence and attributed the disappearances to another demon, indeed causing him to be in a slump.
Yes, Duiskel was supposed to be a somewhat wacky yet pompous character. I based his name on the Dutch word for dizzy, referring to his spiral eye sockets and the fact that he would move around in the sky like he really is dizzy.
That's true, but since she's fully covered in the most bitter substance in the world, i think the Cyclops wouldn't have her in his mouth long and would do his best to spit her out as soon as possible. And if one of her limbs get damaged or something, well, let's say i've heard Dryads can regenerate and i expect the first action with a regenerated hand being a slap in my face for the suggestion of sending her to one.

probably! but i've already got quite a few others and at times, i'm at a loss when it comes down to choosing of which story i will draw something of next and put some info under it to develop it more. Like if i want to draw Sammy's two companions in her castle, who are an imp called Savornin and a ghost maid called Lucille, or if i want to redraw my old Rayman villain OC's Kanor and Hysh'nak. Also, i'm glad you like his name!
That's what i'm saying. GEEZ, would she really do that? i mean, i know i'm not the best friend to have, especially in an entirely different world than i'm used to and very likely to get us into trouble, but still. That's cold as ice.
Though even then, good luck getting me near a cliff. I'm a bit afraid of heights and always afraid of getting near one.
Alternatively, she could probably put some drops of her natural sunblock in my own rations to kind of pay me back for all the mayhem i cause. I'm not sure it would be less lethal than dropping from a cliff, though. We've both seen what happened with those two Pumpkin Dryads.

Nah, she wouldn't do something that harmful. Just cracking wise. It's either putting her sunblock in your rations, or playing some other kind of prank to get back at you. we'll need to wait a bit before i can properly draw again. My notebook's full, and i don't want to draw on the other sides of the pages because it will make it look not as nice. I could, though, maybe make another comic of Thelma and me. that page is still pretty empty because i thought i would need the space to draw the strips.
That's a relief! i wouldn't mind being hosed in the face by an Igneous Frog, actually. i've been hosed under by a squid in an aquarium in Denmark in the summer vacation two years ago, and i didn't mind that either. i do hate getting my clothing wet, though.
the sunblock's another matter entirely, though...

Thanks! Humans do that in real life, and they definitely do it in this world. The humans in this universe are quite paranoid of other species and tend to live in walled towns and cities. Anything large and scary looking is instantly seen as a monster, no matter how friendly they may appear. Dragons get the same rap too, to the point where the term "dragon" is applied to any large creature that attacks or eats people.
It is kind of funny how views of dragons are different between regions.
