Description
With three kaiju on the loose and three failed efforts to contain them, it was obvious that things were getting quite chaotic around the world. After killing the leviathan, we thought we were unstoppable, the masters of this world. Now our might was being bested again and again by these bizarre monstrosities, and we were failing to come up with any real solutions. Governments were furious with the lack of results, and many threatened to take actions into their own hands. However, most knew that a lot of this was just panicked talk. Combined efforts were not enough to down even one of these titans, so what hope did they have doing it solo? Regardless, it was certainly not the best for morale. Slaying the great beast had instilled camaraderie and hope that we could work together, but now these crazed rants and screaming demands were starting to show that it was all crumbling. We figured that researching samples from these monsters would give us clues of their origins and weakness, but science is not a quick field. It was taking time, and folks were not a fan of that. When a massive ball of spikes is rototilling the countryside and the infrastructure upon it, people aren't exactly the patient type. Unfortunately, there wasn't much else we could do. Our normal strategies failed and our favorite toys did little to actually harm these beasts. An assault on any of these titans with our current setup would only waste lives and resources. So we poured what we had into research, and prayed that it would grant us a miracle. Sadly, the first "breakthrough" we got was a massive worm bursting through the earth and revealing yet another plague on humanity.
Study of the tunnel it made its entrance from revealed that it came from the sea, close to where Tculo had originated. This new being, named "Tcaridyi" had gone from water to land, drilling through the seabed and boring straight towards the mainland. Its emergence onto dry land made us think it was switching to a fully terrestrial lifestyle, but it appears that Tcaridyi has love of water. Its future travels would have it constantly moving from land to sea and back, even diving into freshwater sources when given the chance. Some feared it was some kind of reproduction cycle, with the worm constantly going back to the ocean to disperse eggs or something. Thankfully, this was found to be false, as this one too appeared to be sterile. Further observation did find a reason for these frequent dips, and it seemed to be purely for cooling off. Despite it being a giant armored plated worm that chewed through stone, it tended to run a little hot. In fact, it was practically boiling. For whatever reason, Tcaridyi's internal temperature is capable of reaching scalding heights, to the point where you can see clouds of steam billow from it when in contact with water. We guessed that this incredible heat either aided in burrowing through the earth, melting through stone, or perhaps was a byproduct of it. Perhaps the energy required to drill through the land was so immense that it caused such a buildup. While the extreme temperature does not seem to be hurting Tcaridyi, it appears there is a limit they tolerate. When their hide heats up to blinding blues and reds, they slither their way to the nearest water source and dive in. The plumes of steam are massive, and mixing of white hot hide with icy water can generate an explosive force. One time Tcaridyi took a dip in a popular inland lake, and the resulting blast of steam knocked over every house on its shores. There is question if this building heat could possibly reach dangerous temperatures, becoming deadly to the worm if not kept in check. We are certainly looking into it, but we are quite sure that this option of killing Tcaridyi is not viable. First off, we would need to keep them away from a water source for an incredibly long period of time. When you have a giant worm that can drill through the earth, you can't exactly decide where they get to go. The other reason is that this build up of heat could cause some kind of explosion or meltdown. We have no real clue what these beasts are made of or what mutagens run in their veins. If they were to detonate or reach a boiling point, we could be releasing something just as bad.
So everyone was in shock when Tcaridyi first made their appearance, as their drilling through the earth had evaded our notice. So now that we realized that they existed and were now emerging for the world to see, we.....did absolutely nothing about it. We had nothing. How could we mobilize forces when our resources were already so scattered and scrambled? How could we justify another assault on a titan when we failed so many times? And now that this one was obviously armor plated and could burrow, we were sure any efforts would prove futile before the creature decided to dig away. People sure screamed at us to do something, but when we asked for them to provide aid, they would suddenly go quiet. Governments wanted something done, but obviously refused to do it themselves. They certainly said they would, and would go on about how their great military would win the day with ease. But already a decent chunk of said military was turned into piles of scrap and meat after previous attempts, and asking for their remaining strength would only get excuses instead. Observation teams were sent out to watch the new titan and track its movements, but there was a strict order not to engage. Evacuate folk when need be, but do not invoke Tcaridyi's wrath. We currently had no way to retaliate, so angering them would just result in more casualties. To this day, we really don't know what Tcaridyi would do when attacked, as it was a beast we never got around to fighting. They were often overshadowed by more obvious threats, and their burrowing lifestyle made it hard to find a proper window to engage them. There is certainly some fearful guesses of what would happen, as we have already found that Tcaridyi does plenty of damage when they are calm.
The burrowing is certainly a problem on its own, as their tunnels undermine towns and infrastructure. So many roads and highways wrecked by this worm simply passing by, leaving huge collapsed ruts and mounds of chewed up dirt. Unfortunately, things don't get any better when they surface. Their desire for water tends to lead them to civilized areas, as our species loves water as well. Their appearance means plenty of trampled buildings, followed by a massive steam explosion as they take that refreshing plunge. The wave of boiling mist obliterates nearby dwellings and flash fries anything caught in its wake. Not to mention that the whole body of water now has a dead region filled with boiled fish. Ruining popular seaside towns and boiling residential lakes is a disaster, and it only gets worse. The resulting explosion doesn't just create eruptions of steam, but it also carries clouds of Tcaridyi's "hair." The strange bristles that grow all along their body tend to come loose over time, and you can find them scattered about in their wake. When taking a bath, tons of these hairs are washed free from their body and are carried away on the plumes of steam. Add that to the hairs left around as they crawl and the hairs that are sprayed out as they writhe in the water, and you got a huge area of land that is now getting coated in these fine crumbling bristles. A closer look at these hairs show that they are composed of a special weave of fibers. When freshly grown and still attached to Tcaridyi's body, they are incredibly strong and durable. Once they fall off, the structure starts to break down, and they crumble into tiny fibers. This makes them incredibly easy to spread, as they can ride the wind and explosive steam. Though they serve Tcaridyi no longer, they continue on the worm's legacy by making human life absolutely miserable.
When one of these hairs makes contact with skin and flesh, their unique composition sets off a terrible reaction. It is believed that a combination of chemicals and the spiny structures of the fiber causes the human body to absolutely lose its mind. When you are exposed to these hairs, your immune system goes into overdrive and attacks the site as if it was trying to start a world war. The result is obscene levels of inflammation and swelling, while also setting off a terrible fever. Victims often believe they are burning alive, thinking that the affected area has been literally set on fire. This happens wherever a hair lands, and unfortunately victims are hit with more than one. Since they travel in clouds, folk who are not wearing proper protection tend to get covered in all their exposed parts. This results in their bodies ballooning and reaching dangerous temperatures, which requires immediate medical aid before their body boils them alive. So this is what tends to happen when Tcaridyi emerges and goes for a swim, creating "storms" of burning hair that billow across the land. When that worm pops out of the ground, the immediate thing we do is check the weather of the area, and figure out where the winds will spread these terrible bristles.
Tcaridyi's arrival showed that these titans would not be stopping anytime soon, and that we needed to figure out a solution fast. Our efforts still did not produce a miraculous weapon that would delete these monstrous problems, but we were starting to get ideas. We were also starting to piece together some idea of these titan's origin. Tcaridyi appeared to be some kind of bristle worm, one that was native to the waters where the leviathan had fallen. Looking at where the four first appeared, we were starting to think that the carcass of the great beast had something to do with it. Was it attracting them, or was it their source? Eventually we would learn that the leviathan's blood and flesh was the creator of these beasts, which made us realize some terrible things. However, not everyone would think this mutagenic blood was a cataclysmic issue. Perhaps it could be used, in a way that would solve all of our problems. Of course, that was the thinking that only made things worse...
