The cat and the Caterpillar were interesting, yes. But Alice was quite flat and the Mad Hatter looked more like a clown than like a Mad Hatter.

A lot of people are talking about " American Mc Gee", it's a video game, right? it looks very dark and gothic, it's interesting, I'd like to play to that game

One of the weaker parts of the movie was how much time was given to the whole "Alice doesn't remember Wonderland" part of the plot, so even if she was aged, it didn't change the fact that she did, indeed become flatter than a card soldier.

I can't really say anything about the Hatter, but I do agree that he was more clownish in appearance than mad(-ish? ). Other than doing something closer to the original Disney interpretations mixed with the more classic illustrations from the book, I cant' think of another way to render him (though the prospect of doing my own designs sounds like a bit of fun!).

American McGee's Alice in Wonderland is an older PC game that was released by Electronic Arts years ago, and concept-wise, was a really dark version of the story. Unless there's an emulator for the game, I doubt any of today's current crop of computers can play it-- they'd be too fast and powerful for the game, I fear. I found and looked through some of the screenshots before, and I wish I got to play the game too!

I tried to play "Day of the Tentacle" too, an old PC game, but same problem: the PCs now are too powerful and cannot play these games properly...

Yeah, maybe we can find an emulator... but I thought that a new Γ©Alice" game had been released some years ago? (not so long ago...)

Looked it up just now-- American McGee's Alice was released back in October 2000 (--wow!--), though talks of a sequel mention a possible release of a new game by 2011. It's unclear, but I think there's something about an actual movie being based on the game (which, if true will go with Hollywood's tradition of releasing more than one movie with the same theme in the same year!).

Couldn't find any other info on newer games, but it's highly likely that one will be made based on Tim Burton's version.

I think that because of Burton's movie, the project of American McGee's movie was aborted :/

Here's hoping that some attention will be given to the game franchise, at least.

I was actually checking out screenshots from the PC game of American McGee's Alice on giantbomb.com. Their rendition of the Hatter, let alone everything else is quite twisted.

If the movie were anything like that, it'd definitely not be for the kids. I would think it's more like Alice in Wonderland meets Silent Hill. Then again, even Silent Hill draws inspiration from Wonderland to begin with...

Evolvana In reply to Variable-Edge [2010-03-15 22:04:59 +0000 UTC]

But I like that kind of dark atmosphere. Of cours,e it's not for kids, but the Disney cartoon was for kids and was more twisted than Burton's movie...

Variable-Edge In reply to Evolvana [2010-03-15 23:44:43 +0000 UTC]

Goes to show how much the concept "for the kids" has changed since the Disney version was first released!

Makes you wonder if Elmer Fudd would ever get to blow Daffy's bill off with his shotgun if the Looney Tunes were animated in this day and age...

Yeah, I think that it would be censored (is it the word?) nowadays. "no guns!!"

Variable-Edge In reply to Evolvana [2010-03-16 01:57:04 +0000 UTC]

Considering all of the cartoon violence in those old shorts, I would think that we'd be robbed of over 70% of the material if it was produced today.

Oh, the good old days...

(suddenly feeling old! )

Evolvana In reply to Variable-Edge [2010-03-16 02:04:21 +0000 UTC]

In France we had a very violent anime on wednesday afternoon, "Okuto no Ken", it was a mistake to put that on TV for children, because even if there was censure, it was really bloody. Because of that people said that manga were too violent and we didn't have manga and anime in France for like 15 years.

Variable-Edge In reply to Evolvana [2010-03-16 02:28:50 +0000 UTC]

That was the original title for "Fist of the North Star", right? I remember seeing a bit of that, and yes, it was quite juicy in all the "scare parents out of their minds" way.

Amazingly, here in the Philippines, one of the most enduring anime in popularity would have to be the giant robot title, "Voltes V", which actually was banned from broadcast during the martial law years in the 70's, supposedly due to its "violent nature".

What is generally believed, however was that the main plot of the series had people who were fighting back against an oppressive regime, and that the government didn't want to risk the show giving ideas to the youth.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Evolvana In reply to Variable-Edge [2010-03-16 05:01:45 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I see. I don't know the regime in Philippines.

Here they just said it was just too violent, and they were right. I don't even know why the channel bought that serie from the japanese maybe they didn't check it before buying it!

Variable-Edge In reply to Evolvana [2010-03-16 06:18:50 +0000 UTC]

That time was a crucial part of our history, but I was fortunate enough to have been out of the country during the worst of it, since my family moved to the States at that time. I was only a kid back then, so I only really learned much of this when we moved back in the 90's.

It was possible the heads of that channel either had a more lax view towards violence (vaguely likely), watched only "tamer" parts and liked the action (more likely), or just assumed that all animation was for kids and there wouldn't be a problem (very likely)!

Could have been worse. At least they didn't license and air hentai! O_O

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Evolvana In reply to Variable-Edge [2010-03-16 06:31:46 +0000 UTC]

air hentai? here in France, a lot of hentai manga have being published... manga are popular again in France, so about 8 years ago, some mangas are been published again, good ones, then the businessmen thought they should publish more and more of them... and thought that hentai, yaoi, etc would be a good idea... so now we're overflowed by all types of shit mangas... I don't read mangas anymore :/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Variable-Edge In reply to Evolvana [2010-03-16 06:54:47 +0000 UTC]

Despite the fact I draw in a very manga-inspired style, I actually don't read it as much either. I usually just stick to one or two titles, and I only follow a couple of titles (semi) regularly. While I like the fact that manga and anime are not as limited as before, it's true that some places are being flooded with too many titles!

There have been a couple of yaoi titles that show up on the bookshelves over here, but fortunately no hentai (at least not where it can be found easily, if at all).

I'll be more interested in finding a good artbook actually. Especially if there's a book on a videogame that shows all of the development and concept art! (Speaking of which, am about to go to the Lake Shrine in Silmeria, just been spending lots of time levelling up and getting used to the whole Skill system with the equipment runes!)

Oh, I'd love to have a Valkyrie profile artbook! the artworks are so beautiful. I saw very nice official artworks of Dylan, but I don't find them anymore on internet >_< in the game, he doesn't look as good as on the artworks, but I still like him.

My friend say that he has so personality, but I like his quiet and protective style, like a gentle giant ^^ I'd love to have a bodyguard like this, very loyal.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Variable-Edge In reply to Evolvana [2010-03-16 07:23:37 +0000 UTC]

Dylan's a soldier through and through, and anyone who's tough enough to walk on his own immediately after being summoned definitely deserves respect. I almost always have him in the party, unless I need to level up some of the other characters.

Unfortunately, I don't know of an actual VP artbook, but you can try visiting giantbomb.com, and run a search for either game. They have a huge collection of images there, including concepts and designs. Watch out, though, sometimes there be fanart as well, and not always the good kind. XD

Too bad! I hope you get to find the ones you're looking for. Hopefully they come around to release an artbook for these games, Silmeria in particular was an excellent example of what people can do on the PS2-- I liked the graphics there more over other games that were out on the PS3 at the same time.

Well alot of mythology have elves as a part of Faerie, so they are surprised she, a human, survived making it INTO Faerie and that big tree is the guardian to the entrance of Faerie.

Haha you will have surprises then it's... hmm... more in relation with the "siren/mermaid" type of myth ^^ (I do a big mix) I don't try to hide it, it's supposed to be a story for girls (I don't mean by that it will be naive and full of love stories, just that the heroin is a girl and that I'd like to be in her situation you'll see!)
