Description
You asked for it, here it is!I focused more on the details, shapes, types of dragons, so you can diversify the types of dragons you're drawing!
EDIT: About the WINGS attached to the top of the shoulder: some people said it's impossible for a dragon to fly with wings at this place, but I focused on aesthetics more than on anatomy logic (after all if we follow logic, you should have to make your wings with a very precise size, calculate everything according to the weight of your dragon, etc, etc) Dragons don't exist and that's why it is fun to draw them. I chose the example of the wing attached to the shoulder because it's for me the most beautiful one and the one we see the most even in professional artworks, because it looks more "badass" and elegant. But of course you can put the wings lower on the back, or attach them differently to the body. I just won't guarantee it will look good. There are so many different ways to draw a dragon ^^

Scales can also transcend into feathers for air dragon wings and the lithe and fluent forms of serpentine dragons (you know the ones with no arms and legs). Just adding some tips to the fire is all.

The thing with wings is that they can be attached to the top of the shoulder, as long as the flap of skin extends down the back more. This looks better, in my opinion, and it would create more lift so dragons could fly more easily.

Yes it is possible to do that. Depending on the type of dragon, it can look nice or not

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Evolvana In reply to Deviljunter [2013-03-06 22:11:26 +0000 UTC]

Evolvana In reply to Deviljunter [2013-03-07 11:11:41 +0000 UTC]

That's true, I focused on the Aesthetics more than actual true anatomy logic. If you look at almost 99% of the dragon illustrations on deviantart (including the professionnal artworks) all the wings are attached right on the top of the shoulder.
So that's true, a real dragon wouldn't be able to fly properly like this, but visually it's the best and the nicest. And as dragons don't exist, people tend to chose the design they think is the most beautiful and elegant
All these dragons are wonderful but cannot fly (wings too short, too thin, attached on the shoulder... examples:

They are painted amazingly but it still feels like the artists never saw a wing before or have any idea how it works which is very off throwing for people that actually know just how much this wouldn't work. Yes, it's stylized but at least in my opinion this kind of wings doesn't look good on a painting that tries to depict them somewhat realistically, it would look okay on a very cartoony dragon that intentionally doesn't look like it could exist but on that kind of dragon they just look odd and out of place.

Evolvana In reply to seionara [2016-11-20 23:18:17 +0000 UTC]
There are so many ways to draw wings, this is just one way among so many. Even most of the realistic-looking dragons you see in artworks would not even be able to fly correctly, you can't just apply bat wings on everything. So this is just one way to do it, people are free to inspire themselves from that or not. This is a tutorial to draw dragons (cartoony ones, or others), not a biology book

seionara In reply to Evolvana [2016-11-21 15:15:30 +0000 UTC]
I agree that some may choose that style as it may appeal to them more but it should be a conscious choice, not something you do all the time because you've never learned how wings really work or why those would neither be functional nor how real wings work.
Tutorials are often viewed by young artists that have no idea how to draw an anatomically correct (or at least close to correct) wing and said artists often blindly trust what they are told so when presenting heavily stylized wings you should at least tell them that those are nowhere near real wings and give them links to other resources that can help them get a better idea of ho wings work.
As for the slapping on wings part, I agree but there are ways to make it seem much more convincing and it can be fun to try and work out how such wings could work or at least make them look like they could work.
So it's not really the wrong wings that bother me but that it may confuse or hinder some young artists from learning how wings work before trying to bend them to their style as it's always best to learn the rules to break them.

There are many, many tutorials about dragons and especially about dragon wings on deviantart and internet, and people who find my tutorial also find all the others in the browser, so I cannot put links to all the wings tutorials. People need to decide by themselves if they prefer drawing in a cartoony style, in a realistic style, etc... (I think the cartoony style here is quite clear) I said in the author comments that this is just one way to draw that and that people can find many other ways to draw dragons and wings if they like.

Yeah, I know
To be honest I prefer dragons whose anatomy actually seems plausible. The others just put me off, no matter the artistic skill

Ok, it depends on people then you know I also created a chimaera/dragon with 4 wings, not plausible at all, but I enjoyed creating the design
but I understand what you mean. You prefer more realistic creatures.

It also depends on the type of goal you have, I guess. I'm more concerned in understanding evolution and creating alternatives, so plausibility is a must
