Description Here's my rendition of the new Hell Creek velociraptorine dromaeosaur. It's known only from the maxilla and dentary, so I decided to only draw the business end of the animal (that, and I didn't really have the time for a full reconstruction). It's depicted staring at a hispine beetle, of which there is abundance evidence (Johnson et al 2000) from Hell Creek ichnofossils.

The animal has been known from teeth for many years, and was only recently finally given a name, Acheroraptor temertyorum, after the underworld Acheron of Greek mythology (Hell Creek reference and so on). Phylogenetic analysis recovers it as a velociraptorine, the most basal member of the group containing Velociraptor, Adasaurus and Tsaagan.

You have successfully made my favourite raptor paleo art ever. This is amazingly well designed . Colouration is beautiful and accurate, the detail in the feathers are amazingly well done. I can almost count each feather. 100 out of 5

Reconstructions of prehistoric creatures often look clumsy unrefined prototypes of their modern successors, but this one is a complete, beautiful animal in its own right. So real, so ready to run off the screen!

Stunningly beautiful. Thank you for also showing a non-lipped alternative. Which version do you personally think is more likely, if I may ask? I want to sculpt a raptor for my next project and simply can't decide.

chinmoy808 In reply to FluffyPlesiosaur [2015-11-27 04:13:21 +0000 UTC]

I would say the lipped version. The teeth are protected from wind, dust, branches as I think it was semi-arboreal, and insects if lipped. It's up to you though. Sculpting would also be easier. But, the fanged appearance would be appealing too. I draw my raptors with lips.

Something I've been meaning too ask: What do you think of the other Acheroraptor reconstructions ( cdn.escapistmagazine.com/media… ) ( cdn.escapistmagazine.com/media… )? I'm having trouble picking a favorite between yours &Β Dufault's: On the 1 hand, yours is more beautiful & life-like in an obvious way; On the other hand,Β Dufault's has a more "field guide" feel (like GSPaul's art in PDW) &, at the same time, reminds me of Kokoro's Velociraptor (which is 1 of my favorite dino models).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EWilloughby In reply to JD-man [2014-09-08 17:53:54 +0000 UTC]

Csotonyi's would have to be my favorite--the Dufault piece has beautiful technique, but the lack of primary feathers on the hands and scaly throat and deep fenestra put me off.

i really love this, it have successfully portrait the raptor as a majestic cross-breed between reptiles and avians, which is probably the most accurate. i don't get how people could possibly says that feathered dinosaurs are ugly after seeing this?

Great reconstruction, especially the lighting is excellently done! The lips look very appropriate here. Also, if I may ask, how do you make feathers that look so real?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EWilloughby In reply to JWArtwork [2014-01-05 03:49:06 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! As for the feathers, without putting a lot of time into the detail, lighting is key for realism - pay attention to how light and shadow look on a smooth feather coat of a bird, and reproduce the values without the details.
