Sounds like a sequel to a movie doesn't it? Well, it's been over a year since I put this costume on, and more than two years since I brought it to a Texas convention, so I thought it was about time to dust off the duster and bring one of my old favorites back to life. I styled a new wig for the occasion, and was able to get some excellent pictures, such as this one
Vash costume was a collaborative work between myself and my birthfather. Modelled by me.

So much respect for this! And to think you and your father made this costume in every detail! It's totally true to the original and look cool as F*** to be honest! I bet you go to the local coffee, doughnut joint every now and then dressed like this. I would! Pure Win anyway! Awesome.

I've seen a number of shots across the web with you wearing this coat, and it is by far the most badass and my most favorite Vash coat I've seen. Glad to hear you pulled it out of the wardrobe.

I got my wig at Arda wigs (google it) and used got 2 be hairspray to style it. I also used craft foam to make shapes to help hold the hair up in the back, and recently my fiance Malinda started using thick felt sheets the same way. With the spiking I like to start at the back and work my way forward, but try to sort of map it out first so you have an idea of how much hair you have to work with for the spikes, so it won't look thick and full in one area and then thin and unfinished in another.

Have you ever read the trigun manga? I plan on making a coat or two from that before too long, once I get enough people started on a gung-ho guns group.

i havent read the manga yet but im thinking of doing that soon. Cool im trying to work on a coat for a needless cosplay (Adam Blade) in the near future, need to figure out how to do the wiring to have the coat stick out the way it is in the Anime.

you definitely should read the manga! The anime is a lousy joke in comparison. I always push for the manga because it's so much better xD
As for coat flaring, I made a Kaiba from Yugioh a few years back that used a similar idea. I just used wire frame in the edges and heavy interfacing to keep the shape.

Sweetness! So first off- where did you purchase the base coat/ parts? Second: I assume you created the "wear and tear" bullet holes and such yourself. How did you go about doing so? Lastly, what other pieces of clothing or materials would I need to create such a masterpiece?

The coat was made from scratch with leather using a basic pattern that we altered (my birthfather helped me with the construction of the coat). I did do the bullet holes, and it was easy. I traced out the holes using coins, then cut them out with a small pair of scissors and darkened the edges with shoe polish and leather stainer. I made the majority of mine out of leather or vinyl, but those are expensive materials, so you could also use a canvas or denim as a nice alternative. I used leather chaps on my legs as well as knee high boots, both covered in belts/straps to give the full leg look. I wore shorts or skin tight pants underneath. Also, I always use a sock on my arm underneath all of the leather straps. It's cheap and efficient xD
