I changed the background. I don't think I'm going to mess with this image anymore.
A fun color. Texturized again, and this time... I took another step forward at shading. After the blurring of the layer, I used the smudge tool to spread it and blend it more.
You probably remember the old background. The current is actually a battle background from FF6, and the grass was done with brushes.

So yeah. Has blatant similarities to Exate, eh? I put Zangoose on the pic rather than "Exangoose", since that'd be more of a nick.

For being such a simple background, it actually works because, well, I'd imagine to see a creature like that ( In the world of Pokemon at least. ) in a background like this. The background behind the grass looks strange though.

That's a really nice grass effect! Much better than what I saw earlier! 
...Hmph. There's not really much background-worthy I can walk to near my house, unless you count a cemetary, and even then, people'd probably only be concerned if it was a night scene.... Y'know, if I get a digital camera, I just might do that! I need to get out more as it is! XD I don't care what they say: Cartoon-on-realistic-background pics are/can be cool.

Drawings in realism can be cool, only if done right. I haven't done them right, but bleh. I'm just lazy and grab a random background for my images.
This new BG... well. I saw the FF6 bg while browsing and thought I could do something with it. And I just so happened to.
The grass wasn't complicated at all. It uses four layers, with the bottom of the picture being the upper. There's a grass brush along with a triple-blade grass brush, which are the ones I used. In each layer, I shrunk the brushes when I went over... which gives it that look of grass in the distance.

dude I would say draw your own backgrounds. Makes the image sooo much better.
The coloring on xangoose is wickedly good.
There are ways to create blood... I can help..
and as for the texture on zangoose.

I think I've gotta start practicing. I tried drawing another today, and that one came out bad as well.
Might be time to look up tutorials for doing backgrounds...

The background looks pretty good, if you ask me. It reminds me of the type of detailed backgrounds they used in Pokemon 4Ever. (example: [link] )

It would be better if there was more trees and bushes in the background, since wild Pokemon are found in "tall grass".
Also, take a look at movies that combine real life with cartoon characters, and look at how they're shaded. Their shading takes real sunlight into consideration, and the character also has a realistic shadow under it, to make it look like the cartoon is actually real.
With that said, I also think that if you really want to continue putting characters into real BG's, you should buy a disposable camera and take the pictures yourself. ( Sorry I forgot Palmdale doesn't have any good scenery )
Other than that, this actual drawing and coloring is flawless, I mean seriously you've got to be pretty satisfied when you draw something that looks ten times better than the official artwork. I do agree with Bryant though, if you have the time you could use a real picture to get ideas for your background, and then draw off of that.

Finding a background was pretty tough as it was. I'm all for changing the background to make the image look better overall, but I'd need some assistance on that.

i kinda agree with GreenChronic the zangoose looks awesome but background is meh. BackGrounds are kinda difficult to do though so i don't blame you. Great pic though faved.

Well there is nothing wrong with the zangoose it self. As for the background, im not really a fan of "drawn characters with realist backgrounds." But this aint too bad.

I'd make a real background if I could even draw them. I tried earlier, and failed miserably.

Yeah, I mean... I didn't want a realistic bg for this, either. But, had no choice. I applied all sorts of effects to the bg to take away some of the "realism" to fit a bit more better.
In fact, I just reuploaded the picture... you might not notice a difference, but the poster edges are a bit more intense now.

what you should do is draw this background your self. I mean you good at drawing images like that. And when its done, you can add your own touch to it.
