Description
Angelian
IntroductionAngelian (Angelion, singular), also known as Engelkinder or “Anglettes,” are majestic, otherworldly entities born of raw energy and celestial remnants. They are a Semi-Celestial, mammalian/ethereal species.
They are classified as shape-shifters, and typically have between one and three alternate forms, the base Alt being their Deiform, or “true appearance.” Angelian’s “true” or “full” forms are often strange and can be eldritch in appearance. They are demi-immortal-- resistant to death by old age, though they may be killed by illness or injury. Angelian are a highly intelligent, mostly peaceful species who passively rule over charges called Dominions, which they may share with others they consider part of their Choir and will defend with their lives. Angelions form tight-knight, often small groups called Choirs or Hosts, which may include both their own kind as well as other species. Angelian are born when the energy of one or several dying beings becomes absorbed by an Elysian Shard-- crystalline items found in nature that, according to folklore, are shattered pieces of the great angels and demons of mythology. Angelian are an elegant and instinctual species, carrying themselves with dignity and grace, while also remaining very worldly and bestial. They are loyal, protective, and mostly even-tempered, and tend to keep to themselves and those they know well.
One of the Angelion’s most unique traits is their ability to add to and alter their physiological make-up. Though Angelions will always contain some amount of the energy they were born from, they are able to add to themselves by consciously or passively absorbing the energy of their environment. This allows them to alter their core makeup, abilities, and appearance. Because of this, Angelian consider themselves fluid beings, not committed to one idea of themselves and able to evolve their personality and tastes with time and experience.
Devoted Eldritch GuardiansAn Angelion’s Domain is the most important aspect of their life. It is theirs to lord over and mold, however passively and gently. It is the angel’s duty to maintain balance within their Domain, though they will usually do so in subtle, indirect ways unless a drastic situation arises. An angel may claim a Domain comprised of the same or similar energy from which they were created, or they may set out in search of one to imprint on. Interestingly, an Angelion’s Domain does not have to be a set area on a map-- it may be a moving area such as a car or boat, an enclosed and portable area such as an animal cage or terrarium and whatever it contains, an item of significance such as a personal computer or book or precious heirloom, a collection of items, another person or group of people, or even a concept or idea. Because of their passive ruling style, it is entirely possible for a Domain to be claimed without the beings dwelling within ever becoming aware of it. It is an Angelion’s instinctual, core purpose to act in the best interest of their Domain and anyone and anything that dwells within it. They will lay down their lives for the sake of their Domains without hesitation.
Angelian who have given up or not yet claimed their territories are called Unbound. Given that this goes against an angel’s core instinct, this is extremely uncommon, and usually the result of either degradation of the relationship to the initial Domain to the point of spiritual or literal death, requiring the angel to leave for the health of both, or a young angel having not yet imprinted on a Domain of their own. Rarely, some may choose to remain or become Unbound for other reasons. An angel who has been ripped from their Domain or had it stolen from them is called dead. If someone attempts to steal an Angelion’s Domain from them, they will fight until either the attempted invader is nullified, or they themselves succumb to the intruder’s assault.
Infernal MajestyAngelion are beings of grace and dignity in both humanoid and bestial forms. They are heavily instinct driven and proud, and carry themselves with nobility wherever they go. Like panthers or horses, even when behaving in a perceivably “feral” manner, they conduct themselves with refinement. That being said, that does nothing to keep some of them from being overtly silly from time to time. “You don’t live this long without learning to laugh at yourself,” is a common sentiment.
Unlike some other intelligent species, their elegance is not practiced in the form of repressing biological or instinctual urges, but perfecting them. “Animalistic behaviors,” such as heavy reliance on body language and wordless communication, sounds to indicate emotion or simple ideas, or affection shown through specific types of touch are considered normal, and are taught before more speech- or written-based language skills. Personal space and respect of bodily autonomy is sacred to Angelian, and touch can be either extremely intimate, or overtly threatening. There is no in-born concept of gender, and attraction is seen as fluid; sexual openness and polyamory are common, as are asexuality and aromanticism. Eye contact is seen as either extremely intimate, or a direct challenge, depending on the circumstances; this leads many angels to only make extended and direct eye contact with loved ones, enemies, or people they are intently focused on in that moment. They are rarely combative, but may be extremely blunt, preferring to say things in direct, often literal ways; they may be very muted and monotone at times, while becoming highly animated in specific situations. To most Angelian, the idea of not performing a non-harmful, non-intrusive behavior based on a subjective idea of control or display of perceived intelect is senseless, and a waste of mental energy. They would much rather spend time refining the use of their senses and abilities, working with their nature and their desired persona to become highly skilled at what they are already driven to do.
Divine and DiabolicDespite their hallowed name, Angelian possess qualities both angelic and demonic in nature. They may have hide or feathered wings, heads adorned with horns, tails either furry or feathered that may end in a spade, highly movable ears which are often very long, and clawed feet--some sporting large claws that resemble hooves with a dew claw possessing a raptorial talon. Many are feared for their otherworldly appearance, and some cultures view them as either messengers of righteousness or harbingers of doom. Angelion, however, do not see themselves in this light. They see themselves as neither entirely holy nor fully corrupt, but both-- a grey, sacredly unholy dichotomy. While many are proud of their supposed angelic and demonic bloodlines, they consider the idea of them being something completely alien to this reality absurd, and do not see themselves as godly. They are denizens of the world as all other creatures-- deific, but not deiform. They have been around for many thousands of years-- most likely long before humans-- and have come to find amusement in other species’ outrageous and often exaggerated views of them.
“Your Guardian Angel is a Local Cryptid.”Because of their unearthly appearance, scarcity, and tendency to keep to themselves, many Angelian were labeled as legends before they became known to the scientific community, and perpetuated, if not ignited, the stories of many mythological beasts. Sightings of well known cryptids such as Mothman, the Jersey Devil, and some cases of vampires and werewolves have been attributed to various Angelian throughout the years.
This is not considered much of an issue among Angelian when seen in a more progressive light, with curiosity and wonderment. However, it can be offensive if levied against them by way of labeling them dangerous or primitive.
Fresh Out of F***sDue to their longevity and durability, along with their passive nature and the lack of concern given to anything outside their Domain, Angelian have become one of the most tolerant intelligent species in the world. They rarely give other beings trouble over things such as beliefs or lifestyles simply because it does not affect them, and is therefore beneath their notice. Most Angelian maintain the opinion that if one’s life choices do not hinder the wellbeing of others, then it is solely the business of the ones making and directly affected by the decisions, and no one else. This also extends to those who dwell within or around their Domains-- so long as their claim is not harmed, you may do as you please. Most Angelian are comparable to old Saint Bernards interacting with human children: strong enough to ruin someone’s day if they really wanted to, but can’t be asked, so are content to let smaller and less experienced beings crawl all over them and chew on their ears.
This, sometimes, can lead to an overly passive nature. Anelian can often fall into a state of social dormancy, leading to troubles with empathy, social callousness, or degradation of mental well being via listlessness and boredom. This is especially common in Angelian without Choirs, or whose Choirs consist only of other Angelian. It is for this reason many angels encourage their peers to spend time around other species to develop their empathy, prevent carelessness toward social issues, and to alleviate mental stagnation. With their high intelligence and long lifespan comes a need for continuous and new stimulation– and this can be both a blessing and a curse for many.
Base AbilitiesAngelian possess demi-immortality. They are almost perfectly resistant to aging due to near non-existent DNA degradation, and either have extremely long lifespans or are immune to death of old age. They also have a rapid healing ability which allows them to mend wounds much faster than most standard species, a common trait in semi-celestials. They are able to regrow large sections of flesh, organs, or even portions of limbs given enough time and energy to reform the lost tissue, so long as the wound is given at least minimum treatment to prevent infection or bleeding out entirely. A deep cut to the flesh may only take a few days to heal, while a severed finger may take a few months to regrow. Severed limbs are also more inclined to successful reattachment than in other mammals. However, they are not immune to death by illness or trauma, and may be killed if significant damage to their core or head is sustained. No special methods are required to kill them, so long as they receive more trauma than they are able to heal, faster than they can heal it. Scarring is less prominent and may fade faster and more completely, but will still occur in the wake of sufficient trauma, and can be permanent if the wound was severe enough.
Because of their bestial nature, Angelian have incredibly keen senses, including bat-like hearing-- allowing them to hear frequencies inaudible to other species at much lower volumes, and keen, low-light vision-- the ability to see in high-detail and in very little light. They see slightly into the ultraviolet and infrared spectrums, and have a much higher density of cones and rods than many other mammals, giving them almost bird-of-prey-like vision. They also possess a reflective organ at the back of their retina, as well as a nictitating membrane under their eyelids. They have a slightly heightened sense of smell, which may let them recognize the scent of an item or individual whom they know very well, if given a strong enough sample (such as a used blanket or lock of hair). Their senses of touch, balance, and spatial awareness are all incredibly fine-tuned, allowing them great maneuverability and dexterity. However, this all can be a double-edged blade, as it makes them highly susceptible to overstimulation.
Agelion are classified as total shape-shifters, and have a minimum of two forms they are able to present. Their standard, or “base” form, is considered to be their humanoid body with all inhuman features displayed and all wings manifested. The Deiform will appear as inhuman, often animalistic, chimeric (composed of several known entity types), mythical, or Eldritch in nature. This form may range in size from exceptionally small (the size of an insect), to behemoth or titanous in stature; though the normal range is between the size of a rat to that of an elephant. Indeed, some more powerful Angelian are able to shift between very large and very small in size when in Deiform. Angelion may have several other variant forms, as well, most often being variations of their two base forms. Some Angelian learn to disguise themselves as more human-like, or as various animals.
Most Angelian have some level of control over specific types of elemental energy. Most angels have some thaumaturgical abilities related to whatever energy they were birthed from or grew into, usually related to a raw “element” or specific practice. Angels may possess the ability to wield or manipulate time, space, void, light, shadow, water/ice, fire, electricity, wood/flora, wind/air, metal/stone/crystal/earth/magma, blood, rot, sound, basic chemicals, and gravity, just to name a few. They will typically have slight resistances to damage from whatever elements they wield.
Empathy is a prominent unique feature of Angelian. Many angels are skilled in Beguiling-- the reading of the emotions of others in order to respond in kind with actions or words aided by an emotionally influencing aura emitted by the angel in order to induce the desired effect. This is most often used to calm others who are in distress, induce fear in enemies, or charm another person into doing something the angel wishes of them. This technique is most effective against non-empathic beings, or beings who are easily influenced, though it is possible for them to use this ability on each other if the influencer angel possesses stronger empathic capabilities than their target angel. The downside of this ability is that it makes most Angelian slightly more susceptible to mental attacks than most species. Angelian Empathy may be perceptive (reading, or knowing the emotions of another), receptive (feeling, or experiencing the emotions of another), or projective (influencing, or inducing specific emotions in another), or a combination of these. While often highly empathetic, many angels do not show emotion in the same way as other species, and may be perceived as callous as a result. They may also have trouble reading the emotions of others if their empathy is more projective, or may even over-read emotions or feel them as exaggerated. This can, at times, make them emotionally awkward or uncomfortable when interacting with unfamiliar people, or those who are not as direct in their communication of feelings.
TraitsIntelligenceAngelion are highly intelligent as a species, and have mental capacities on a similar level to, or slightly beyond that of humans. They are capable of learning how to utilize human technology easily, and also have some native tech of their own. Many are inclined toward the ephemeral sciences or fine arts and crafting. They are able to communicate using all means humans can (speech, text, sign, morse, etc.), as well as being more proficient in reading and displaying body language and subtle noise and voice variations. Sign is a common second language for most. Their empathic abilities may help them pick up on meaning via tone without total understanding of a language. It is suspected that they may also have very limited telepathic abilities, as they seem able to communicate very basic ideas through gaze or small noises alone. They may act bestial at times; however, this is not considered uncivilized, but rather a display of true, raw instinct. Angelion consider themselves highly dignified, and have complex structures within their social groups.
Behavior
Angelian are a calm and usually peaceful species as a whole. For the most part, Angelian keep to themselves and their Domains, and only concern themselves with the things and people within them. However, if the territory of an angel is threatened, they will become defensive or even aggressive in order to protect it. An angel who has had their Domain defiled in any drastic way, almost without exception, will become violently enraged, setting on a path of vengeance until the cause of harm is neutralized.
Disruption of the healthy stasis within their protected area notwithstanding, Angelion are incredibly docile. They have little care for the squabbles of other beings, and are often passive to the point of seeming apathetic. This is often seen as lack of empathy or thoughtlessness by other species. This is not the case, as Angelian are intensely protective of those within their care, and are often much more comfortable showing physical and verbal affection than some other less instinct-driven species.
Seemingly paradoxically, Angelion are a species of both elegance and refinement, as well as instinct and raw emotion. While angels are highly intelligent and see themselves as exceedingly dignified, they also recognize their base needs and urges, and observe and respect them rather than repress them. Behaviors such as running on all fours, eating with the hands, and communicating with bestial noises are not seen as undignified, but rather as natural behaviors. Angelion carry themselves with grace and quiet pride, possessing exceptional control of their strength. They are aware of their majesty and unafraid to display it, yet confident enough to not feel the need to boast about or prove it to others. And in this lies their nobility.
Social StructureThe social structures of Angelian, while often loosely defined, are complex and intricate in how they operate, and generally become more rigid the larger a host becomes. When Angelian live in groups, the congregations they form are called Choirs or Hosts. Every Angelion commands a Domain, and everything within that Domain is under their protection. If another Angelion lords over a Domain which lies within that of another, the angel with the smaller territory becomes the responsibility of the angel with the larger one. If an angel commands a Domain with many other Angelion or other beings in their care, they become a Conductor. It is possible and in fact common for Choirs to have more than one Conductor, with especially large Hosts usually having two or three with shared responsibility and care of their Domain(s). The role of a Conductor is not that of an absolute leader, but of one most skilled with organization and planning, with additional leadership skills aiding their position.
Conductors will typically directly organize others in three distinct roles: Composers, Scribes, and Sentinels. Composers are the creators, craftsmen, tinkers, and other goods and service providers of the Choir; this also includes artisans such as cooks, farmers, gatherers, hunters, and anyone that procures or produces supplies for the group. Scribes are knowledge specialists– record and book keepers, historians, scientists, teachers, philosophers, diviners, and any others in fields of information and learning. Sentinels are guardians and defenders, acting as the Choir’s protection against a variety of threats both internal and external; however, this extends far beyond the role of foot soldiers, often reaching into maintaining infrastructure, disease control, upholding of law and order, and protection against misinformation.
If the Choir is particularly large, each of these factions may have one or more heads called Sages, who will communicate the direct wishes of the Conductor, or, more often, work with the Conductor to implement desired changes using their own expertise. A Conductor may also have Counselors, usually those skilled in social sciences or law implementation, to aid in informed decision making; though it is also common for Counselors to act as peers and confidants for their Conductors, often being chosen from or becoming close friends over time.
Seniors to the Conductor, usually previous Conductors or very old and/or experienced Sages, are called Elder Seers; the counsel of an Elder Seer is often equal to or even sometimes surpasses that of the Conductor, and may be chosen and debated on by the Sages. Chosen family or colleagues of equal or near-equal standing to the Conductor are called Consorts or Blood Brothers/Sisters/Siblings. Chosen family of lower standing, successors, students, protégé, or any other charges of the Conductor are called Wards. The unranked members or “civilians” of a Choir are known as Denizens.
All of these terms may apply to both Angelian and non-Angelian members. Only the title of Conductor must either be held by an Angelian, or imparted onto a member of another species by an Angelian, usually an Elder Seer or Conductor, though it may be bestowed by an Angelian Denizen majority. The title of Elder Seer is exclusively earned through service, and cannot be imparted by any authority other than a Denizen majority, not even by a Conductor.
In smaller communities, these ranks may be fuzzier or more loosely filled, and some Angelian may fill multiple roles. In Hosts of less than five, this is almost always the case, as the Host is too small to fill all these roles. In Hosts of five to ten, these roles tend to be shown more as roles within a home rather than strict roles within a society and may be swapped around as needed. Angelian may also include non-Angelians in their social structures from time to time, mentally slotting them into a role, though this is usually without the other person’s knowledge.
Angelian who choose not to form Choirs will typically form passive bonds with anyone they do share their Domain with, relating to them only with peaceful distance and neutral or passively favorable acknowledgement. They may choose to form alliances with others without forming an actual Host with them. Angels without Choirs are referred to within the community as Pariahs. It is important to note that this term does not carry with it the negative connotation it has in human speech, and is simply equatable to “introvert” or “lone-wolf,” referring to one who prefers their own company over the company of others.
Range of HabitationAngelian are generalists, and are highly adaptable. As such, they are able to live almost anywhere. They are slightly more resistant to harsh climates than most other intelligent species, and are able to build structures and craft clothing to protect themselves. And where an individual chooses to call home depends mostly on personal taste and what sort of environment they were birthed from. Oftentimes, they will choose environments that are similar to or which complement their elemental makeup. They inhabit every continent, and can live both in communities of their own and among other species. Many avoid densely populated areas– such as cities and suburbs– due to how difficult it can be to maintain their Domains in such a place. However, some actually prefer these settings, as it gives them more to do with their time.
Reproduction and LifespanAngelian are semi-immortal, in that they either have extremely long lifespans or are immune to aging past a certain point (which one is the case is unclear). They also have a healing factor which will slowly mend their body from even gravely serious injuries so long as enough time and energy is allowed for the mending. Their healing abilities allow them to regenerate large portions of their bodies, though this is costly in terms of energy and is extremely time consuming. They can, however, be killed by both disease and deadly injuries.
Angelian are not inherently a sexual species, as they do not rely on biological reproduction for continuation of their species. Angelian run through cycles of activity and dormancy via rebirth from energy deposits called Elysian Shards, told in mythology to be remnants of great angels and demons who once ruled Heaven and Hell. These shards will always be present on their bodies, and are the core part of an Angelian’s physiology. Their bodies will develop around their Shard inside egg-like crystalline cocoons called crystalises (pronounced like chrysalises). Usually, these are formed and grow without a host; although, occasionally, other Angelian may choose to carry the embryo within their erogenous sack (an organ mostly used for pleasure, but also able to be used for carrying young) for the sake of protection or accelerated development. Without a host, a crystalis may remain dormant for long periods, developing only while conditions are favorable. Without any periods of dormancy, a crystalis will take no less than one year to fully develop, with the average being between a year and a half to three years in the most favorable conditions. With periods of dormancy, that time can stretch to decades or even centuries. If an angel choses to carry the crystalis– usually upon either finding or creating one, or carrying one created by another– the egg will be placed into the open erogenous sack. The slit which covers the sack will close partially or fully until the crystalis nears the hatching stage, at which point the skin closing the slit will grow thin and part to allow the crystalis to be passed. This process is significantly safer and less taxing than most mammalian births, but can still be rather painful. Angelian are capable of reproducing “sexually” if they chose to combine their energy with that of another being or beings (Angelian are capable of combining the matter of two or more individuals regardless of species), though this is not common, as it is extremely draining and painful, and involves breaking off a piece of their Shard to form a new entity. It is possible for two or more Angelian to combine pieces of their shards into a new being.
When an Anelion first emerges or “hatches,” they will start off with the appearance of an animal or chimeric creature, and will develop their humanoid forms over time. Most Angelian reach complete physical maturity around one hundred years of age, though this varies somewhat. Angelian are born able to burrow and eat small plants and insects; this is to give them a chance at survival should their shard develop without supervision from other sentient life. However, if an Angelian hatches into a community with at least one Angelian willing to care for them, the carer may begin to secrete a golden, viscous liquid called honeydew. This is a nutritionally complete, easy to swallow substance with roughly the consistency of honey or tree sap, which may be fed to the infant for the first two years in addition to semi-solid foods. The chances of this substance being produced are increased if the crystalis is carried within the erogenous sack, but it is not always necessary for production to begin, as it is stimulated by physical closeness with the crystalis and the infant.
When an Angelian dies, their brain makeup and neurological structure will be re-absorbed into their Shard along with some of their matter, and some of the matter of their surroundings. Their body will begin to decay, separating from the Shard, which will begin to secrete a clear, tacky substance that hardens and darkens over time, forming the crystalis. This is how Angelian are reborn, and why sexual reproduction is not necessarily needed. The process of reforming and growing will begin again, and start the life cycle over from the beginning.
Angelian do not have divided sexes, but rather are completely sexless. All members of the species capable of carrying embryos and donating energy for the development of one, as well as feeding and caring for infants. They have little to no concept of gender, and instead will adopt whatever label they feel most comfortable with or that is most used for them by those around them, if they chose any at all. The native language of Angelian– Enochian– rarely makes use of personal pronouns. In English, most Angelian will default to they/them, xe/xem, or it/its pronouns or other equivalents, though using she/her or he/him is also fairly common.
SizeAngelian can range in height from four to ten feet or 1.2 to 3 meters. depending on subspecies, breed variation, and individual physical makeup. Weight is even more heavily varied, due to some Angelian having hollow bones and more or less wings. When the wings are not being displayed, they are reabsorbed into the body, so that the angel’s weight stays the same whether or not the wings are manifested; as such, many angels may weigh much more than they appear. The average range is between 100 and 1500 pounds or 45 to 680 kilograms. For extremes like this, the smallest Angelian would be 4 feet tall, lithe, hollow-boned, with a stub tail, and possessing only two wings; the largest, on the other hand, would be around ten feet tall, fat and muscular, solid-boned, with a 12-15 foot tail and six wings.
Generally, higher Choir angels will be larger, though this is not always true. Angels who take up professions as messengers or book-keepers tend to remain smaller for mobility and maneuverability, while soldiers may grow larger for strength or space control. Choir leaders and figureheads are often mid-ranged, as to not make them large targets while also not leaving them weak. Although, an angel’s size does not dictate their job, but rather, their job dictates their size. Angels will fluctuate in size somewhat throughout their lives, and they do not stop growing when they are physically adults. Often, an angel will not settle into a size-range until they are between 100 and 200 years old, at which point, many have chosen a profession or passion. And even then, their body can continue to change along with shifting interests and environments.
DietAngelion are omnivores with a generalist appetite. They can and will eat just about anything most mammals can. A well-rounded Angelion diet will include meat, plants, and minerals. Some are known to consume clay for the minerals in it, especially those with more bird-like features. Some will hunt for their own meat. And many grow their own produce. Honey is a staple in Angelion diets, and is considered essential to their health. They often prefer whole foods-- raw meats, fruits, and vegetables– but are not at all strangers to complex recipes and elaborate feasts. They are able to consume raw meat and fish without ill effects, though will still often cook their food for flavor. Many Angelian are also candy-fiends, though some won’t admit it. They are also able to eat some things which may be poisonous to other mammals, such as angel’s trumpets or hemlock. A particular poisonous mushroom, the destroying angel, is actually commonly used by Angelian as a recreational hallucinogenic additive to alcoholic drinks. Nightshade is also used as a brewing ingredient for a mead of the same name, most often made with honey, fruits, and spices, sometimes including wyrmwood, as well. The drink is usually a deep maroon red to a dark indigo violet, and is considered a staple of Angelian culture. While poisonous to most species, it is a mild hallucinogen and depressant to Angelian, and often associated with a sense of euphoria and calmness. Cannabis is also commonly consumed recreationally or for medicinal purposes via smoking, edibles, or topical treatments.
Health and Common AilmentsAngelian are resistant or immune to many illnesses which affect other mammal types. Some illnesses to which they are not immune include the flu, the common cold, rabies, AIDS, and cancer, though they do show resistance to most cancers. Interestingly, their inclination toward neurodivergence is fairly high, estimated to be at around 50-80%.
One illness which was created to target Angelion but may be spread to other creatures is the Jade-Mulberry Blight, also known as “Ridding Rot.” JMB (named for the scientists which developed it) was developed as an anti-Angelion bioweapon. JMB is an energy-disintegrating virus which breaks apart a being’s DNA and RNA make-up, and causes acidic buildup within the body, causing it to rot from the inside. This causes muscle and bone pain, flu-like symptoms, personality changes, memory issues, aggression, weakening of keratin structures (hair, nails, etc.), purpleish-black discharge from all orifices and with vomit, and eventually organ failure and death. This is a chronic illness that is treated through the use of a mix of highly toxic plant herbs diluted in honey and water or milk, given daily to the sufferer. This disease can be managed, and may even have periods of dormancy, but no cure currently exists.
Among the most dangerous non-species-specific illnesses to Angelian are respiratory complications and broken structural bones connected to the wings. What makes such injuries difficult for Angelian is the tendency they have to ground the sufferer. An angel that cannot breathe properly or support its wings cannot fly, and is therefore at a drastic movement disadvantage. Angelian also have massive lungs which may fill up to 70% of their internal thorax. This makes lung infections highly devastating and incredibly difficult to treat.
Thankfully, Angelian as a species are generally highly advanced and open to medical treatment, as well as having ambivalent mindsets towards the sick and disabled. Angelian that are not physically or mentally as capable as others will be supported by Choir members or allies with the needed faculties. It is especially common for two or more angels with opposing disabilities to bond and aid each other (e.g. one blind and one def angel, or one with a mobility impairment and one with a mental impairment).
Naming ConventionsAngelion names are structured to have a chosen name and a “vei” name (similar to a surname). A vei name will always be the name of a high angel, demon, or other ethereal spirit– often of the Abrahamic religions, but not always– from which the Angelion believes their being or “lineage” derives from. For a first name, an angel will be given a “call” name at birth to use until they reach an age of reasoning, at which point they will be allowed to choose their own name. Some may choose to keep their call names, either as their chosen name or in addition to their chosen name. Most often, names will be structured as [chosen name] [call name] vei [angel or demon name]
Most angels do not limit themselves for names the way humans do, and will often name themselves after anything they feel attached to or that simply sounds good to them. Though it is generally frowned upon to take the name of a high angel as your chosen name.
Some examples include:
Mellarius Ambrosia vei Lucifer
Obelious Lambert vei Samael
Olivia Nanbo vei Hael
Jace vei Haniel
Whiskers Robert vei Raziel
Willow vei Azrael
Angelian use clothing for function and expression. They do not possess the same concept of shame as some other intelligent species. Clothing is most often used to protect the skin from unwanted touch, protect the body from damage, to show status or personality, or to aid in a job or activity. Craftsmen are often the most adorned, followed by elders and nobility. But it is very common to see all classes of Angelian dressed casually in simple robes or smocks, or nothing at all. Undergarments are expected in public places (excluding activities like swimming) as a matter of sanitation and injury prevention. The style of clothes varies wildly and is often drawn from the local area in which the Angelian is raised. Classical Grekoromen, Biblical-Period Middle Eastern, and Northern European Victorian Eclesiastical are some of the most frequented styles, though most are altered to accommodate for the shape of their bodies and for practicality.
CustomsThere are several notable holidays and festivals observed by the Angelian. Some may choose to celebrate both native customs and the customs of whatever beings with which they surround themselves. Interestingly, despite many of their coined terms coming from Abrahamic religions, Angelion belief systems tend to be inclusive rather than exclusive, and bordering on agnostic, meaning their beliefs can co-exist fairly well with other belief systems.
Many Choirs observe the Equinoxes and Solstices as part of their celebratory calendar. Many also celebrate All Hallow’s Eve or similar holidays as a formal holiday, as well as various winter holidays in addition to the Solstice.
The most notable holiday native to the Angelian is the Fortnight of Satiety. This is a two week and three day period in which Angelian will explore the Seven Vices and Seven Virtues, typically with the first week being dedicated to the Virtues, and the second to the Vices, with a day of preparation before the festival, a day of rest in-between the two weeks, and a day of recovery after the festival’s completion. This festival is meant to encourage exploration of the full range of natural emotion, of both temperance and indulgence, allowing those who participate to explore themselves and learn what is important to them. The first time an Angelian takes part in this festival to its full– whatever that may mean for them– is seen as a right of passage into true adulthood.
The final prominent holiday in Angelian culture is The Sacrificium. This is a ritual only observed by powerful, high-ranking warriors and leaders. For one week of every month, for seven months, for seven years, participating Angelian will undergo intense fasting, training, and exposure to harsh conditions. This will be led by an Elder Seer, who has experienced a great deal of growth in battle or scholarly pursuits, often both, and is a skilled teacher. This is a right of passage for young warriors who intend to become Sages, and will only be granted the title once they complete the ritual– a total of 343 days of training over the course of seven years. This is also usually preceded by even more training and grooming for a specific position, as well as for the trial itself. Most Angelian will be discouraged from taking part before they are at least 150 years of age, to ensure both that they truly desire the position for which they are training, and to avoid damage to a still developing body.
As a general coming of age ritual, Angelian will develop sigils that act as crests or seals, and are often used as signatures or for spellwork. These sigils are unique to every Angelion, and will often grow in complexity as they age and add symbols to them. Though they will typically remain simple enough to be drawn readily by hand.
Severe punishments are rarely carried out by Angelian against their own kind, but there are some exceptions to this. If an Angelion commits a grave sin or is shamed by their Choir– usually by infringing upon another’s Domain– the Choir may put up a vote to shatter the offender’s horns. This is a sign of great humiliation and shame among Angelian, especially those of the to First Choir who typically have Halos. When these horns are broken, they will eventually grow back, but rarely resemble their previous glory. A perfect halo can only be formed during adolescence, and, if broken, will never regrow into a continuous loop without damaging itself. This is a permanent scar that will mark them forever. As such, this punishment is not taken lightly. It is much more likely for an angel to be punished for exacting this treatment on another than to have it implemented against them by a majority. Though rare cases may see a near unanimous decision to enact this punishment, such as in cases of severe animal or child abuse, intra-choir murder, sexual assault, or defilement of another Angelion’s Domane.
Physical Appearance and PhysiologyGeneral OverviewAngelian are semi-mammalian in physiology, with a humanoid build, human-esque face, digitigrade legs, between one and six horns (usually), a tail of any length, movable ears, a deep chest, and between one and three pairs of wings that may be manifested and reabsorbed at will. Their feet and hands are clawed, and their toe claws may be narrow, or large and wide enough to resemble hooves, though they are not true hooves. Paw pads are almost always present. Retractable claws are a rare but not unheard of trait.
All skin colors found in humans can also be found in Angelian, along with ink black, sheet white, grey, silver, and many off-white and off-black colors with pale tints of blue, purple, pink, or red; Vitiligo is fairly common. Their skin may feature limb gradients, broad stripes, vitiligo, clouding/spotting, or any mix of these. Some may have metallic sheens to their skin. It is common to see Angelian with tattoos that compliment their body shape and other markings, despite having no other apparent meaning. Hair, fur, and feathers may be any color found in mammals, may be two-toned or tricolored, and may have tints or streaks of colors not normally seen in mammals such as bright blue, red, or green. Eyes may be any color; heterochromia of all types is common; sclera may be white, black, grey, off-white, or brown/red; irises are often large and pupils may be round or, rarely, slitted. Horns and claws may be any color, and are typically metallic, pearlescent, or crystalline in texture, or a mix of these; horns, claws, “hooves,” and any keratin plating will all be the same color or combination of colors. They may have scales, keratin, or bone plating covering small portions of their body (esp. on extremities or joints).
Most display bestial features that vary wildly between individuals. They are mostly bipedal, but are capable of running on all fours or even using their wings to walk or run. To facilitate this, their trunks and arms are usually slightly longer proportionate to their legs when compared to other bipeds. They also have barrel or wedge shaped chests to accommodate the mass of muscles needed to move their wings. They have extra pectoral muscles that attach to their keel (a bone which protrudes from the front of their rib cage) to move and power their wings. The wings themselves may be either avian (feathered), or mammalian (hide). They may have dental maps different from that of humans, but will always have some sort of omnivorous teeth (elongated and pointed incisors [single or double] or “fangs,” shearing/cutting front teeth, and grinding back teeth). An angelian may or may not have hollow bones. Angelian only have one waste zone as opposed to the two of most mammals, which is located on the backside of the pelvic area under their tail. Angelian have no true genitalia of any sort, and are physically sexless.
All Angelian have an Elysian Shard at their core, which is nearly always located in the center of their body somewhere between the crown and the root (top of head to peak of groin) or along the spine, but may also be found on the hands or feet, the base of the tail, or somewhere on the skull. Two or more Elysian shards sharing one body will be considered separate entities unless they should specify otherwise. Two shards merged together may identify themselves as a singlet or a multiplicity.
Things You Will Not SeeIn a healthy Angelian that does not contain any significant amount of DNA from any other species, you will never see the following traits:
large areas of neon colored hair/fur (some feathered areas may be brightly colored)
neon skin of any color (all skin tones should be somewhat muted and within similar saturation levels seen in humans, or just a bit beyond)
bright yellow or green skin
functional extra limbs outside of the listed two arms, two legs, tail, and two to six wings
swinging/retractable fangs (similar to some snakes)
plantigrade legs
“true hooved” feet, or feet without jointed toes and claws
complete lack of tail (stump or docked tails may exist)
blood colors other than dark violet-red
sclera colors other than black, grey, white, off-white, or brown/red
pupil shapes other than rounded or slitted
more than six horns (smaller spines or scutes are common, however)
more than six wings
insectoid wings, or wings not either avian, mammalian, or a mix of the two in appearance
complete lack of body or head hair
total skin coverage by scales or armor
excess fur or feathers in the areas around the eyes, mouth, belly, or waste area
“functioning” genitalia (usable for reproduction)
nipples
no shard present
There are three subspecies of Anelion, Radiant, Infernal, and Hybrid. The difference between these three variants is almost strictly appearance based, though some differences in behavior and abilities may exist. Beyond this, there are nine echelons of Angelian which can be broken down into three tiered choirs, which denote levels of power or developed abilities. It should be noted that, while usually a vaguely accurate representation of an Angelion’s general skill and power, it is not to be considered in a vacuum and is only one of several factors playing into an individual angel’s abilities. It is an even less accurate representation of age, and while generally younger angels tend to inhabit lower tiers, and higher tiers tend to be comprised of older angels, this is not anywhere close to a hard and fast rule. Most Angelian begin their rebirth as basal angels, but may grow and develop in power beyond this point as they age. However, some individuals may carry power over from previous lives, and emerge as “higher” tiers from the crystalis. By the same token, many angels simply never develop their powers beyond what is necessary, and remain in lower tiers their whole lives.
SubspeciesThe Radiant to Infernal division is not a binary system, but more of a gradient: some angels will gravitate strongly to one side or the other, but many have at least some traits of both, and some fall near the middle.
Radiant Angelian typically have lighter colored hair and feathers, with darker skin, and more earthy tones. The most common eye colors are pale gold, silvery white, aqua, forest green, periwinkle/lilac, mahogany brown, and sky blue. These angels will typically be more heavily feathered than furred, with bird-like feathered wings. They may have scales covering the lower portions of their legs, and their toe claws may resemble talons. They are generally more lithe and tall than other variations, and more likely to develop hollow bones for sustained flight. They are often less adept in physical combat, typically relying more heavily on magic or elemental strengths. They are long-distance travelers, denoted by wanderlust and generalist lifestyles that allow them to easily adapt to most conditions. They are worldly, and often seek knowledge from as many varied sources as possible. They are largely diurnal, and may be more social and trusting of outsiders.
Infernal Angelion may have darker hair and eyes, with lighter skin, and colder or more ashy tones. Common eye colors are mocha brown, mahogany red, whisky/amber, charcoal black, apple green, and royal blue. They may be more heavily furred, with hide-covered, membranous wings rather than feathered wings (though this is not always the case). Their legs will typically have feathered fetlocks, and their toe claws may more closely resemble hooves. Their tails may or may not end in spades, and they are more prone to developing keratin armor or bone plating. They will typically be stockier than other variations. Infernal Angelian tend to have solid bones, and be more combat ready and less apt to long-distance flight. They are survivors, inclined to carve out niches in areas of extreme conditions and remain there, becoming specialists so that they may thrive where others are not wont to tread. They thrive off the familiar, and use their knowledge of their territories to their advantage. They are largely nocturnal, tend to keep to themselves (either individually or in small groups), and may be more suspicious of outsiders.
Hybrid angels are a mix of the above variations. They may have any mix of the traits listed above. They often have wings that are partially feathered and partially membranous. Their toe claws will typically resemble hooked hooves. Many Hybrids display heterochromia and vitiligo of various forms. They are typically corpuscular-- active at dawn and dusk, or polyphasic-- sleeping in short bursts throughout the day or night. They may be very docile in general, while still stand-offish with new people. They tend to prefer the company of small groups. These are possibly the most common of the three variations.
All three of these subspecies can exist in all nine echelons of Angelion, and the features of these variations will typically be secondary to the echelon traits.
EchelonThe nine echelons of Angelion can be divided into three Choirs: First Choir, Second Choir, or Third Choir.
First Choir Angelian have the highest occurrence of circular horns– called Halos– that will grow into each other while they are still young and malleable, forming a halo. This is rarely seen in other choirs, and is considered a sign of “unsundered lineage” and power. It should be noted, however, this almost exclusively occurs in Angelian who are hatched with their first choir power still at least partially intact from their previous existence, as the horns of Angelian who achieve the status later in life are almost always too far developed to form a complete halo. First Choir angels are also typically the strongest of the three categories, and may command some of the largest Domains, though this is not always the case.
Second Choir angels will typically fit a standard class within their Choirs or Hosts, though not always. They usually have specific jobs for which they are best suited given their species traits.
Some Third Choir angels may completely lack horns, or have very small horns. They are generally the weakest but most common of the angels. They are usually generalists with varied skills and high adaptability.
SeraphimSeraphim are a First Choir subspecies of Angelion. They have six wings, and are often fire or lightning elementals, though some may lean toward shadow elements. They are often very rule-oriented and justice-driven, with serious attitudes and eye-for-an-eye mentalities.
CherubimCherubim are a First Choir subspecies. They have four wings. They are often wind or plant/wood elementals, though some may display affinity in water elements, as well. They are often curious and intelligent, and may be somewhat anti-social, but are generally quiet and non-confrontational.
OphanimOphanim are a First Choir subspecies. They have two to four wings, and may have many eyes in their full angelic forms (Deiform). They are often aether, light, or wind elementals, though there is a higher instance of blood elementals in Ophanim, as well. They are often calm and kind-hearted, with joyful and generous attitudes.
DominionDominion are a Second Choir Subspecies. They often serve as guards or advisors to Host leaders. They are strong-willed, but eager to please those who have earned their loyalty. They excel in law and order.
VirtuesVirtues are Second Choir angels that are often associated with nature and life. They are usually good with plants and animals. Virtues are generally soft-spoken and sometimes timid, though may have wild tempers when provoked or backed into a corner.
PowersPowers are a Second Choir subspecies which specializes in combat. They are often high-ranking soldiers under large Hosts, and keep invaders and any potential harm from entering their Domains.
PrincipalitiesPrincipalities are low royalty in the Third Choir. They are often tasked with aiding new ruling Angelion as they learn how to perform in their position. They are wise in many areas and jacks-of-all-trades rather than specializing in any one area.
Arch AngelsArch Angels, or Archs, are Third Choir angels who serve as a medium between rulers of larger Domains and their people. They carry out censuses and deliver messages to and from the ruling angels, as well as speak on behalf of the citizens of a Choir to the Conductor. Archs are most commonly found performing this duty in its most formal and literal sense in very large Domains.
AngelsThe most common and rounded class of Angelian-- the Third Choir Angels. Angels (capitalized when referring to the subspecies), may fit many different roles and specialties, or be generalists with talents in many areas but mastery of none. They are generally the weakest of the subspecies, but are also the most numerous.

Finally, i've finished it. The Angelion Breed Standard. This is comprised of both a visual guide, and a written document. These two documents contain a rich library of information about Angelian and their culture. If you were ever curious about this species, here's where you can sate your thirst.
For the out-of-character information, Angelian are a semi-closed species. Anyone can make one if they want to. I will be opening a compendium of "canonical" Angelian. For all intents and purposes, the only thing this is, is a stamp of approval from me saying, "Yeah, this could exist in Edenfall." In the future, if i'm able to find a setup that works, this will be a requirement to officially take part in the RPG. But, if you want to have one just for fun to use for whatever you want, by all means, do whatever you please.
If you want to submit a design for canonization, join my Discord, submit your design to #art-crit and tag me stating your wish to have it canonized. The design will be subject to critique before acceptance. You may also DM me directly (for the time being; if this ever gets a sizable following, i'll be finding a more efficient submission method).
Otherwise, have fun making Angelian however you please. The only thing i ask is that you please credit me for the species. I'd also love to see your creations using them.
