Description
This is one of three quotes of Herman Hesse from his book Steppenwolf, which were painted on the wall of my factory where I used to live. I was forced to move house, but last time I rode by, they are still there in the main hall.Herman Hesse... Words fall short...

Great of someone to pick Hesse's words, He's my favourite, and The Steppenwolf is the best book ever written!!

Great idea. Reading Hesse from off my wall... That would make every day worth waking up for. Love the font, as well as the offset "is." Very groovy.

You're the first to pick where my sig comes from .I read Der Steppenwolf as part of my final year English assignment, I chose to compare it with Camus' The Outsider (an interesting comparison I found, you should read that if you haven't) but I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The first time I read it I was like "what the hell did I just read" - it was a pretty intense, complicated book, there's a lot in it and it's often very ambiguous, in the past it's often been violently misinterpreted. But I liked many elements so I read it again and started to get a whole lot more out if it and it made a whole lot more sense, it was a surreal and very thought provoking piece, especially as I could identify quite a bit with where Harry was coming. On the whole it was very...strange. Definately one of my favourite books.

Yuh indeed, the book is filled with multiple interpretational things. But I find it intesely inspirational and I too felt a kinship with the stennewolf although I have left that viewpoint and look at it from the outside now. I have read all of his other books as far as I know. I truly enjoyed Demian as well. There isn;t much that comes close to him in writing I feel though, he combines fiction with philosophy in such an interesting way...
I will remember the Outsider for my next book. I have alot of Kafka to read first, but I will definately do : )

Of his books I've also read 'Siddhartha', 'Klein and Wagner' and 'Rosshalde'...of them I liked 'Rosshalde' best...and 'Siddhatha' I didn't get quite so much out of...but yeah I definately like his style too, you're very right, they do have a very nice philosophical/spiritual element, they all seem to have a kind of ghostly feel if that makes sense...
The good thing about the Outsider is it's very short, only around 100 pages so it's a nice concise read...although it's a bit bleak and sparse, not a very flowery read...but it ends really nicely, quite inspiring too.

I ordered the outsider today from a bookshop. :applause: It will take a few weeks to arrive. I ordered it in english because it isn't available in dutch anymore. The person at the book store explained to me that these books, hesse and Camus and so forth, eventhough brilliant, get swiped away by the commercial books like Bill clintons crap. Man that upsets me so much.
I read Steppenwolf, Demian, Siddharta, Narciss and Goldmund and another book which I cannot remember much from now... I will try to get Rosshalde. In the mean time I'd like to recommend you 'Zen and the art of motorcycle Maintenance' by Pirsig. If you havn't read it already : )

Yeah that's sad, but quality is generally never mainstream unfortunately. I've seen it in bookstores in Adelaide, there are actually generally large sections reserved for 'literature' or 'classics'...so it's sad they didn't have it. I got Steppenwolf from a 2nd hand bookstore though, they often have old classics like that.
I'll will try out your recommendation and give that book a shot because we do actually have it at home...although I've never read it. It sounds interesting by title alone...
