This is really cool , the whole image is well done with the gradient background, roots and the concrete looking figure which at first I thought looked like a 3d render but after examining the light at the top which slips to darker surface of the figure, and the bottom strokes force me to conclude that its probably done in 2d.
Also when looking at the white glowing area of the figure as a separate dimension I could see surreal world where its a day time, its autumn, trees have become lifeless and all the leafs have fallen off to the ground covering earth.
Anyhow, the whole idea (like josh said sterile vs organic) itself is very imposing.
PS. Since I had the experience of removing my wisdom teeth recently, this image reminds me of a tooth.

Nice work, the contrasts (sterile vs organic) work really well. This has the potential for a series, no?
