You're correct on the rodent: it's a brown rat. The weird shaped vertebrae is indeed for muscle attachment. All rats do have an enlarged 'spinous process' on that specific vertebrae, but I noticed that the biggest brown rats I proccesed also have a little piece of extra bone that sticks forward. The bigger the rat, the more muscle.

That's really cool! I wonder if it helps with digging/foraging and connects to the shoulder muscles, or if it's neck muscle attachment instead.
