i'm working and working, trying just get control of cylinders. I finally decided to try it my way and use my thumbs for control rather than my fingers. It has not worked well for me to try and pull up the vase by using my left hand inside pulling up and the right side outside locked in with it. I'll still keep trying various techniques that I see in videos or learn in class for pulling up a cylinder. I want to master that simple shape, because it is critical to learning how to throw pottery well.

My shapes are getting better. I'll start posting some of them soon. I've got a lot to photograph -- both in greenware and in the stuff that came out of the kiln in December -- but some of the kiln stuff is up.

thanks for your work. It is SO inspiring. Your control is very good.

Thanks! If you have any specific questions about forming cylinders, write me a message with the problem you're having, and I'll try my best to help! Learning to throw a good cylinder is definitely vital. Can't wait to see your work!

there is some of my work already up in my gallery. go it it and click on the sidebar collection that says "ceramics"

and, yes, I do have a question. describe to me how you personally "pull" a cylinder -- how you hold your hands, which hand is inside, which way the wheel is rotating (clockwise or counterclockwise), etc.

I am left handed, and I can throw with the wheel rotating in either direction. But I always throw right handed unless I am trimming.

I am starting to wonder if I need the wheel to rotate left handed when I pull. I've tried it, but it seems to work better for me with it rotating in the right handed direction. Still, I am not sure, since I cannot pull in the methods described in books and on videos. So I am going to start interviewing people to find out how they do it.
