Description The Phoenix Saga changed comic books forever, as the sheltered female character, nestled into a team of males, took the forefront of the story and became more capable, more proactive, and more powerful than her fellows. Jean Grey, previously called upon as backup, or considered an auxillary member of the team, gave her life to save her teammates, and rose a goddess. Jean is the team member that nurtures the dream, feeds it, keeps it alive. Phoenix is the embodiment of life, and Jean Grey is the heart of the X-Men.

From a hand drawn wire frame to a mouse-driven PSP creation, to pay tribute to my favorite mutant and to celebrate ten years in digital illustration by recreating the first character I created on a computer, Ms. Jean Grey.

oh, *excessive drooling over jean gray* this is a lovely depiction, my dear. Everyhting is so well proportioned, and the fire bird is just deliciously done. The only crit i can give would be to say that her body and clothing have a certain 'blurriness' to them that kinda contradicts the sharpness of her hair and the fire. I'm not digi-savy, so i an't say how one would go about 'sharpening' details like that, but overall, this is just yummy!

That's great, I like how the darkness on the left makes the picture more dramatic, plus bringing out the right side. She is beautiful, and I especially like the way the fire was drawn.

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant, and so true of comics books and th greatest character in comic book history.

As a female comic book fanatic, becoming involved in the X-Men and Phoenix sagas was one of the greatest passions of my childhood. When Phoenix came along, everything changed and I was drawn into the character of Jean Grey and Phoenix more than I had ever been before.

Amazing work and brilliant tribute,

Unfortunatly, living in England and not having the same comic book culture you enjoy in the States, i've never had a chance to read the comics.

Big fan of the tv series though, and without a doubt the phoenix sagas are one of the best pieces of animation i have ever seen. The dialouge is perfect, and for a cartoon to deal with the death of a main charector (especially one whom has a romantic affiliation with one of the other charectors) is exceptionally rare. And then to bring Jean back as the dark phoenix stirrs up all the emotions attached to her death. The phoenix sagas are in many ways much more adult than the rest of the series which i liked.

I think your piece of art perfectly captures this character. Definitly adding it to my favs

As for the previous comments, I'd say the shading on the face was done just right, it does take into effect the curvature of her profile. The soft style is admirable for this particular piece. I'd say the only thing wrong I can find with the whole thing is maybe the arm, not sure about the edge, if it might have been intentional. Other than that, very nice work, deserving of a devWatch for sure, let me know when you make any changes!

I just cant explain how perfect and beautifull you made her look, the pose, the simple phoenix, PERFECT. You're mine forever and ever and we can live together too! haha

great concept. love the piece

it's unfortunate though that the piece is blurry and lacking somewhat in detail

also the shading seems to be a bit off on the face/forehead where the light/shadow edge should be more organic and curvy. straight doesn't seem to make sense given the 3d contours of the face...?

well done

Thank you for the constructive criticism. It's much appreciated. I will be fixing the shadows on the face when I have my computer restored to me, and see your point there.

As for the blurr and lack of detail, it's a combination of my typical soft focus style and the nature of the effect I'm going for--some details picked out of a dark background. Rather than a full image of Phoenix, I opted to create only what was necessary to imply the rest of the image. I understand that it's not the most popular style, just from the soft focus, and without more detail it can appear that way, but I enjoy soft focus for its ethereal qualities.

ah yes! it did seem rather ethereal when I looked at it, but not enough to be noticeable...
you might get more of an ethereal effect by using Photoshop's Color Balance or something to add soft yellow highlights to the body and elsewhere
