I have to admit I liked the bastard. Even though he was an enemy, he was still a lot like InuYasha.
Think about it - he sought more power, has a human origin, desires to fight and prove himself, has a band of comrades that are extremely loyal to him - and he wields an oversized blade that is empowered by demonic power. All of that combined with the fact he is a hot-blooded fighter means he is in many ways a worthy rival to our Hero.
Likewise, his fighting skills are nearly equal to that of his nemesis.
Plus, it doesn't hurt that he isn't at all bad looking, I'll admit.
