Description
My first plein air painting. Painting on location can be challenging and rewarding. It was very windy up there, surrounded by a big drop on a cliff. I was lucky to get all my gear back up safetly thanks to my mum and sister.

Sounds like fun!
I love the colours. In my humble opinion I think the sky is especially good.

Thanks Chris! It was fun, but I had to paint in constant fear as suddenly gusts of wind would hit me on that cliff.
The Sky was achieved with a Cobalt Hue mixed with Titanium white with a little bit of Naples Yellow and a teensy bit of Scarlet. I used the AS brand of oil paints mostly, and used winton for the earth tones (like my teacher advised me to do)
I feel that I didn't achieve the correct shade of green here. The cluster of trees had a nice subtle maroon over a deep sap green, but for some reason I just did whatever. Probably just inexperience with en plein air painting.

I'm storing this information for future use for when I try some painting.
I liked studying the piece and wondering what you were capturing (not meaning I can't possibly tell from your work!, but of course a style portrays a subject in a certain way). It would be interesting to see a photo of the same view, but I'm not suggesting you struggle up there again just for that

Oh you're going to try painting?! That's Great! How exciting!
Sure you can use anything of mine as reference/ research material (if there is any merit )
I do in fact have a couple of pictures, do you have an e-mail address so I can send them to you?

I've had in mind trying painting for quite a time. Quite on the back burner. On the odd time I tried it, it sort of went not too bad!!
Thanks! Should have asked first.
I'll take the plunge one day (I mean seriously). Acrylic has seemed to me to be something I'd like, but looking at others' work, it's probably silly to just limit to one thing.

Oh? Could we see this painting? I'd love to see it.
Naw u didn't have to ask. I don't have the right to stop you from using my work as research, nor would it feel proper. Especially when I do the same to other artists.

Acrylic is a great way to start out! Easy to clean, dries relatively fast, and spreads easily. When you build up confidence you can try oils, but when you do buy some brush soap and conditioner if your concerned about vapors from turps. I don't use turps and brush soap and conditioner work just fine for me. As for brushes people normally say 'Synthetic for Acrylic, Hog Hair for Oils and Sable Hair for Inks'.
I got a set of synthetic brushes that use both Oils and Acrylics well! Just ask the shop owner just in case. As for mediums, I never use mediums as such. The only time I used a medium was for my black and white interior acrylic painting (gloss medium). Just determine what you want your painting to look like, and buy the appropriate medium
Before you move onto Oils, you could try working with an Impasto Medium which gives acrylics an 'oil like' quality. Also Gouache is a good way to move from acrylics to water colour, as you can use it with water but the opacity of gouache is in between water colour and acrylic.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice. Definitely appreciated, and needed!
Thanks too for the Picasso quote, etc. - feel much better
I'm afraid that last drawing was kept by the retreat [link] where I did it about 2002. They asked if they could, which was a nice compliment. The view I drew was much like the top photo here [link] , except from more to the left, of the building.
Ones before that I can't even remember.
I must get going again!!
