I sadly had to say goodbye to my best friend of 8 years yesterday, easily the most horrible sad thing I have ever had to do. My poor sweet girl got a sinus infection in the last week of October (she had a really bad discharge from her left nostril) which she beat after only a week of antibiotics, she continued on them till the end of November, sadly the infection cropped back up again after only a week off of the antibiotics, she then went back on for 6 more weeks which she finished on January 19. She seemed to be doing very well, she had lost a lot of weight after being on antibiotics for so long despite doing my best with her diet, but I was confident she would gain it back with some time to recover, however she never got that chance. On the 22nd her breathing had become labored, at first we thought it might be due to mold in the hay, but the next morning my mom (who luckily is a nurse) and then the vet had a listen to her lungs and the prognosis wasn't good. She had developed a pneumonia, she was immediately started on IM (in muscle) antibiotics and a bronco dilator. We watched her closely over the next few days, checking on her a minimal of twice a day, she was started on bute on the 24th to keep her temperature down. Despite everything we did when the vet came out on the 26th the lung disease had progressed. Due to how she was acting (still bright, alert and eating) the vet said we could try her on the same combo of antibiotics that she had responded so well to for the sinus infection. However her vitals continued to worsen, but she still went out in the field, eating grass and taking a nap in the shade, nickering at me every time I came out to feed her, which made our decision all the harder.

Sam was such a fighter, and so brave and courageous all the way till the end, and I will miss her so much that words can't describe it.
