I never read the Death Note manga, only watched (and loved ^^) the anime, but why is Matt not included in the anime? Does he play a small role in the events?

hmm I really don't recall any character named Matt in the Death Note anime... there was "L", Near and Mello. Isn't this Matt the same as Near and Mello (i.e. one of the possible sucessors of L)?
PS: I went for a bit of research and yes he appears in the anime, apparentely, but he must appear only briefly and have a small role since I really don't remember him O.O

Yea, he was the smartest at the Wammy House after Mello.
He had a pretty small role, about only two minutes of screen time. He was working with Mello and ended up getting killed.
