Ya know, I rewatched episode 37, and after I saw Light take several bullets and then be able to walk all that way before finally dying, I thought "Okay, I think Matt had to have lived at least long enough to use that gun he was hiding..." But that's just my opinion.
He also had 3 lives left.

Well, it was kind of valiant, being surrounded by thirteen bodyguards all cool and calm like that. They just shot him out of spite, that's all.
But yeah, he could've pulled it out on one of them at the very end, but I guess the author found it unnecessary to the plot.
